Charlene's Bar & Grille

This is my new neighborhood spot. The owners took time to welcome us and the mother, for whom the restaurant is named, is a great cook. So far, we've had the turkey burger, well flavored turkey meatloaf and the beef short ribs that fell off the bone. We've ordered for delivery and have come in to pick up food and a drink. I recommend the macaroni and cheese, green beans and mashed potatoes as sides we've enjoyed thus far. Not sure what the previous reviewers are talking about as this isn't a bbq joint per se and it is located on the well travelled Georgia Ave so of course the outside will be busy at times. I understand they are opening a back deck as well so we'll be sure to check that out as well.

The bartender Q was awesome. Restaurant had a vibe but not many people there. Food is decent. Not a fan of sugar in my vegetables. The sugar overpowered the cabbage and greens. The whole wings were very tasty.

Came with a bunch of friends on a Saturday afternoon, perhaps @4pmAs a large party, the tables were arranged for us. Downstairs might just be a place to walk in and take out foodUpstairs was the bar area. One bartendar who was also the waitress. She was helping everyone was the service was a bit slow. Our large group, plus the general population coming to visit.They had an iPad in which we played our desired songs, including a microphone for impromptu karaoke lolFood literally took 40-1 hour. My friend ordered 2 hotdogs, she got her food last and it was over an hourFood was just okay. Would only return for the chill vibes.Street parking. But be careful, a friend had her car broken into where she parked on Euclid and 9th St. NWDirectly across the street from Howard University. You have to climb stairs to get into establishment and to the bar area so pls be mindful there are no elevators or handicap entrances

As a family group went to this restaurant during a trip to DC & it was a disaster, very disappointing. We got there around 4pm and waited 2 1/2 hours to receive our food. The waiter was great but the customer service altogether was horrible. They were out of Meatloaf, chicken salad, cabbage, etc. the corn pudding was continuously cooked & burnt. The only thing that was good was the seafood egg roll and the greens. The corn bread was over microwaved and rubbery. The Mac and cheese was dry and the chicken was under seasoned. I totally do not recommend this place at all.

Stopped by for some lunch after a work event in the area. Found out that it was a black owned business, which I love to support. I ordered the Turkey burger with fries. It was really good. I recommend trying the Charlene mild sauce. I put it on my burger, but was told a lot of people put it on their fries. I was the only person in the establishment at the time. The bartender/owner was very attentive and made good conversation. The place gave a neighborhood bar feel. I will definitely be returning.

Love it. And the sweet potato pie is off the hook. Ms. Charlene is the best and the food taste like home.

This food was very very good, I'd definitely recommend anyone looking for a place to eat to go here. She had our food out in a good amount of time and the staff was friendly. I ordered the lamb chops and when I tell you that those were THE best lamb chops EVER I'm not playing. The macaroni and greens were definitely top tier. I'm definitely visiting this place again.

My husband and I were attending a concert at Howard University and decided to grab some food before the event. The place was cozy and nice that evening. It's located on the second floor. The food was delicious I had some wings and my husband had the brisket sandwich. Cornbread was good too. We had some alcoholic drinks and it had a good kick.

Charlene's Bar and Grill delivered on the food quality. Baby that chicken was FRESH, ok! Much appreciated. Unfortunately, the service completely undermined the experience. The downstairs host was unwelcoming, setting a negative tone from the start. Things only worsened upstairs, where the bartender prioritized socializing with another customer over basic service - taking a full 8 minutes to acknowledge me despite the nearly empty establishment (just myself at the bar and one table of two in the entire place). The staff's indifference was particularly disappointing given how quiet the restaurant was. While the food showed promise, the poor service makes this a place I wouldn't return to.

Arrived and asked the waitress what the most popular item was and she said "everything ". I said really, what do most locals go for in this spot. She would not answer. She kept saying "everything " with zero recommendations Ordered a normal cheeseburger burger. 56 mins later, I get a cold burger in a plastic to go box. They serve sit down meals in plastic to go containers. Don't waste your money. I am prepared to be sick To the restaurant..charge more and provide more. I know you can do better
