Connie L. "Enjoyed another great meal at Charleston The turbot and tenderloin were great. The oysters were surprisingly really good- had a very light fry. I wasn't a super big fan of the risotto but I don't usually like risotto- it was more runny and had more liquid than other risottos than I've had. Husband and I wanted to try the white truffle since it was in season but we were both a bit underwhelmed."

Chris S. "Franklin's in Hyattsville feels like a mix between a toy store and a burger-and-beer pub, offering a unique vibe that's both fun and welcoming. It's a great spot for college students and families, blending an inclusive atmosphere with excellent food.Speaking of the food--it exceeded my expectations. The burger, which cost about $18, tasted gourmet, with high-quality ingredients and incredible flavor. It came with fries, which were simple potato wedges. The fries seemed pre-cut but not factory-made--possibly prepared in-house, though I can't say for sure. They were fresh, clearly made from whole potatoes, and had a rustic charm since none of the wedges were uniform in size. Some were cooked more thoroughly than others, which left me curious about their frying process. The burger itself was big, juicy, and well-seasoned. The sauces on mine were a standout: a hot sriracha honey and a chipotle zesty onion blend, perfectly balancing spicy and sweet flavors. It's a combination I'd highly recommend.Beyond the food, Franklin's has an amazing gift shop. It's practically a Maryland emporium, filled with state pride and quirky novelties. You'll find Old Bay-themed items like stuffed toys and keychains, plus toys like Lego sets and Harry Potter plate collections. They even sell practical kitchen tools like cheese graters. The variety is impressive and reflects the vibrant, community-focused energy of Hyattsville.Franklin's is the kind of place you can visit with friends, family, or even a college crew, and leave satisfied with both your meal and the shopping experience."

Guaranteed high-quality gourmet styled dishes each visit! Their coffee and breakfast bar open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM. If you are here for coffee, you must try the Magic Mushroom Hot Maca-Latte! In addition to espresso and coffee, they have smoothies (Green Machine Smoothie for the win) and fresh pressed juices (ginger elixir--sooooo good).Brunch is served on the weekends from 9:00 AM through 3:00 PM (I recommend the apple cinnamon pancakes). On Thursday and Friday from 7:30 PM until 9:30 PM they have live music. As a girl raised in the South, I have been satisfied with their grits for the most part. Yes, there are times when I add more butter, salt and pepper. Grits is the most important item to me, because I mix it with my scrambled eggs and have it with toast. I did try the crab grits once and it tasted just like what it sounds like, something like a crabcake. The best thing about this place is the atmosphere. They sell a lot of books and has a Cafe type vibe, which is great for business brunches in a casual and non distraction setting. The staff rounds it out by always being polite and efficient."

Art T. "This is a great location, right on the corner with other restaurants in Maple Lawn. They recently updated the menu, and the first dish I tried (French Onion Grilled Cheese) was FANTASTIC!! Others were not as impressed with their meals, but I'm only writing with my experience. We've had spotty service in the past, but our latest visit was great. I did see some staff members hanging around, and there are the occasional leaners to be found. But, again, the last time we visited, we had no complaints with OUR server. The atmosphere is modern, a little chic, but slightly rustic as well. Wood, wrought iron, clean walls, incandescent lights... that kind of scene. It's conducive to good eating, though, I feel. The prices are okay, depending on what you get. The lighter fare like handhelds are generally much better than the entrées. It works for both lunch and dinner, though. We've been here several times already, and for the most part, everyone has generally enjoyed their meal. Again, the jury is still out on the new menu...Overall, it's a great location, generally great food, and typically great service. If they keep hitting on all these items, they should be here for a long time to come. Here's hoping!"

The service was also relatively fast. One thing we really appreciated was that the café wasn't crowded, making it a nice, quiet space to enjoy our meal and have conversations without too much background noise.Unfortunately, our experience was affected by poor service. Our waiter forgot one of our orders and, instead of addressing the mistake professionally, was rude to us. I waited for my friend's food to arrive before eating, and by then, mine had gone cold. It was disappointing, especially because the food itself was great. If you're looking for a quiet spot with good breakfast options, this place is worth checking out--just hope for better service!"

SoBo Cafe

★★★★★ 4.5 (472) • $$

James R. "Sadly, I was disappointed with my dinner experience at SoBo Cafe. The cafe itself feels much more like a bar, which is cool, but the quality of food for the style of dishes in context with the atmosphere felt mismatched. My favorite dishes were the crab soup and the smith island cake. The crab soup was pretty good, with lumps of crab. The smith island cake was moist with good chocolate icing... although as you can see in the photos, the layers of the yellow cake inside weren't even, and the chocolate was clumped in some areas. Nitpicking, yea- but keep in mind this is a $10 piece of cake. The Peruvian roasted chicken was okay- it was cooked well and had decent flavor, although a bit overpowered by the dressing. The sides with it were just okay and nothing great. Cornbread very just okay and dry at parts. I would've ordered this dish for $15, but not $29.Now unfortunately for the worst parts. Being Italian, I am particular when it comes to meatballs- although there have been times Ive enjoyed ordering meatballs in restaurants. This was not one of those times. The meatballs were inedible for me.My friend didn't mind them, but she also likes the meatballs from Subway... and she even acknowledged that they weren't that good, which says a lot.The brussels sprouts were weird. I have never had orange slices and creamy aioli-like dressing with warm brussels sprouts and goat cheese for good reason: it's not very good. This was an extremely odd combination that our waiter did recommend ordering the broccoli instead (probably would've been a good choice), but for some reason I didn't imagine fully what the appetizer would be. I'm not usually big on making a point about price, but the dishes at SoBo were way over priced for their quality. Yes, they are elaborate and technically high end style dishes worthy of higher price points, but the quality and execution of these dishes are so lacking that the price points cannot be justified. At $95 per person, dinner at SoBo Cafe was far from satisfactory. It wasn't the worst meal, but for how everything was priced, I cannot give this restaurant more than three stars.I do not include service in my rating, but our waiter also wasn't the best or most attentive. He had the attitude of a bartender who would rather be doing something else."

The waiter was swift and attentive with our orders. My dirty martini after a long day hit the spot! I ordered the salmon BLT and got a side salad instead of fries. The side salad was so large I had to take the rest home. My salmon BLT had a great balance of salmon to sandwich and the bacon was thick and crispy. Our server was nice enough, although he could have been a little more attentive. I ordered the seasonal pumpkin spiced martini which was absolutely delicious. My second drink was my favorite though. It was called heaven and hell - the menu description is "Rum Haven Coconut Rum / Pineapple Juice / Lime Juice / Habanero Simple / Jalapeno Garnish." It was the best drink I've had in a really long time. It had the perfect balance of sweetness and spiciness. I would highly recommended it. A woman, I'm assuming the manager, came over and asked if my gf and I needed anything and that's when I ordered the heaven and hell drink. The woman was nice enough to give that round to us for free! I wasn't expecting that at all. For dinner I got the meatloaf and my gf got the Kona kabobs. The meatloaf was absolutely the best meatloaf I've ever had. It was grilled so you got that charred flavor, but it wasn't too dry and the seasoning was on point. The mashed potatoes were delicious too, as was the gravy. I tried my gf's Kona kabobs and they were very well seasoned and tender. Overall it was an amazing meal and we had a good time. I'd definitely give them another try."

Our waitress was very nice but she barely came around. It took a while for us to actually get our food order in and receive our check. Food came out at a reasonable amount of time though.Food: collectively as a group honestly it was mediocre. The food holds a high price tag which comes with high quality/taste expectations but it really wasn't adding up. The chicken was OK and had flavor but it was soggy with the prosciutto under it and green beans in a very liquidy sauce. It would have paired well with some sort of mashed potatoes or polenta even. The other chicken dish on the menu (chicken paillard) apparently was supposed to be formally removed from the menu so I couldn't order it. The pasta was nothing special and they were out of mussels. The braised short rib was good but it definitely wasn't worth $30. Overall: The Charles sounds likes a fancy place and a place that you think would get more attention on a Saturday night but it was very short of that.
