Ok so the area might not be a favorite among some peopleSo I've been passing by this place a few times now and didn't have the opportunity to stop and check it out. First of all, I had the Tri-tip sandwich special (soda and chips) and a side of chili beans and rice. The meat was juicy and thick, the bread was soft, borderline soggy. BBQ sauce was good as well as the salsa. The chili, was fantastic as well as the rice! What I didnt find apealling was that the soda they offer were the cheap brand (Shasta) ehh. On a good note: they offer sides for $1.50 ooooor 2 sides for $2! Oh and take cash, if not, they charge $.50 for visa...

Western Kitchen has been bought by Kelly of Kelly's Tandoori grill (formerly on 34th street across from Memorial Hospital). What a difference! When we walked in, the little dining room was packed and the place smelled divine. The food? Oh my gosh. Soooooo good. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala combo for $7.99. I also got a sweet lassi. The salad was fresh and crisp with cucumbers and strawberries, the rice was delicate and cooked perfectly, the naan was cooked in the tandor and was like the platonic ideal of naan. The raita was a perfect counterpoint to a truly brilliant and complex Chicken Tikka Masala. The thighs had been slow cooked and the sauce was a curry with good heat and deep flavor (not just masala flavors but fresh cilantro and something that tasted like a bit of mint in there, too). The lassi was made with the same strong, fresh yogurt that the raita was made with. It was the sweet, cold relief that led me to clean my plate. Yeah. It's the kind of food that makes you feel loved.

Have you ever had barbecue that made you sad? I mean like, want to cry?Well that's Western Kitchen. I stopped in because they had signs declaring some crazy good deals on wings and tri tip. The wings were carbonized bits of grizzle drowned in a mediocre BBQ sauce. The tri tip was dry strips of leather drowned in a meciocre BBQ sauce.I should have been put off by the smell of the place (usually a good indicator). It smelled of mildew and cleaning products. But, I thought I might be judging them too harshly and didn't feel like walking somewhere else. So I plopped down my $10 for what turned out to be an anti-deal. The best I can say about the meal was that there was a lot of it. Though 90% ended up in the garbage.

This is a very inconpicious place. I drove by it for years and never stopped. They serve good, not outstanding food, I would say three stars for the food. The other star- well it is for the value and the people are nice too. I have always had the sandwiches. This place can be recommended for good basic BBQ at a very fair price.

Great people doing delicious things with ribs, hot links and tri tip. 5.00 will net you a tender tri tip sandwich with your choice of bbq sauce or salsa, a canned Shasta soft drink and a small bag of chips. Its really the perfect amount of food yiud want to eat during a small lunch break, and the richness of the homestyle flavors makes me feel as though im truly treating myself.

I used my Spottedfox.com coupon today. I had driven by before, so I knew it was mainly a take out, and catering business. My husband and I each got a $10 combo plate. We got two nice slices of tri-tip, a hot link, a portion of ribs, salsa, chili beans, macaroni salad, small bag of chips, and a cold Shasta drink! Whew...it must have been 2 pounds of food. All of the meat was tender, and very tasty. The salsa was spicy and garlicky. Wonderful flavors on the tongue. My macaroni tasted like it had dill in it, and my husband had the potato salad which he said was full of chunks of potato and creamy. We loved the food, and I wish I had an event to be catered! There are two small tables by the window, each with two chairs. The exterior is nondescript, and it is on the border of a poor questionable business area. I would give it a 4 to 5 stars for food, but the area of the business rates a 2 or 3. I have another coupon, and I look forward to using it! Very good food, and good buy for the money!
