I went here last year and a lot happened. They have a dress code and not to strict like middle school. Thorner was not looking out because a lot of kids were vaping in the restrooms. A lot of fights happened on the 3rd day of school there was a fight. The last week of school there were about 3 fights.so think about it before you send your kid here. Amazing teachers though most are nice and the subs are very rude to you. That is my experience though.

Thorner School is a Magnet School of the Bakersfield City School District. Located in East Bakersfield, the school is Transitional Kinder through Grade 6. The Magnet Program offers classes in the arts. It is one of the highest rated schools in Bakersfield. There is a waiting list, so get on it now if you want your child to get accepted to the Magnet Program there. They offer a summer school program that runs from 8am to 2pm. If you are in East Bakersfield and your elementary aged child is performing arts oriented, I recommend Dr. Juliette Thorner School.

I went to this elementary school for my sixth grade year, as far as I saw the principal was rarely involved with the students, majority of the staff was kind, but of its a performing arts school all students should be available to at least a few DECENT classes on the arts, the art class lacked creativity and the teacher was very rude, as far as the music class went, it was lacking engagement. As far as the orchestra, and advanced band and strings classes go, the teacher clearly had favorite instruments, coming from another school my past music teacher was excellent, but at this school the teacher was far from that, I learned nothing. They sprung songs on us, and you could clearly see that in the string section the other violins were at a much lower level then anybody in the advanced section at my former school. As far as I had heard from my fellow students the school used to be great, until the new principal and vice principal showed up, in my year there students vaped on campus, and then proceeded to share it with other students, in the upper grades this is basically a summary of the year, but I must say, my younger sisters year in pre-k could not have gone better, she was happy, he teacher was kind, she made friends an was learning. I wouldn't suggest this school for older children but for the first few years it would be great!
