Papa's is what it is and that's just how we like it - the gossip/info hub of the mountain, a very general country store with a smidge more than the basics, and the only choice for people over here on the LH and Lake Ez side of the Mountain without having to drive 10+ miles or down San Fran. It doesn't change a whole lot & that's OK. It's more than a gas station - they usually carry at least one version of anything you'd have to have when you're in need and don't want to head off the mountain. It's not a full market with all your fav brands, but mostly anything you'd want from sweets & TV dinners to bread and milk can be found, along with some surprising things the owner, George, picks up to stock here and there (Mexican candy, various toys and gifts, etc.). It's mostly handy for those who want drinks (alcohol and soda/other), smokes, and snacks, but can be a life saver when you need even stuff like holiday ingredients (they always stock things like yams, gravy, etc. at the right times), desperate-for toiletries or a phone cord or some medicine fast. And if they don't have something that is asked after a couple of times, you're likely to see it pop up on a shelf soon enough. The people George hires are usually pretty good eggs or they don't last. It's nice to have friendly and familiar faces who are just genuinely nice salt-of-the-earth folks who, despite dealing with some locals at their best & worst, still have time to be sweet to kids coming in to buy candy with their egg money. Small-town "only one we got" places have their good and bad - the "mountain surcharge" can grow tiresome, but it's worth it to not have to drive into town when you run short on milk or want to grab a frozen pizza for a quick dinner. And it's certainly nice to have people you know in there who are willing to go the extra mile. We definitely recommend Papa's often and are in there at least 4 times a week, sometimes daily during certain times of year. We're glad it's still here and we SO missed it during the renovation, so we will always vote for them to keep on keeping on. SUPPORT LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES WHEN YOU CAN!

It's OK. Getting gas 24 seven is the best since there isn't much else around in the area.

They have lots of good things to pick up however they do not have any IPA beer. But they do have some other good choices. Trendi is awesome. She's in here a lot when we stop in. It's nice to have locals here It's a very friendly store and they have gas too.

Being that this is the only grocery store/gas station in town, it works for me. I used to live up here for all of 5 minutes.Don't eat the fresh food. Stick to the beer and anything in a can. I got deathly ill because my ex thought it would be a good idea to buy the ground meat to make hamburgers from.... I'm not exactly sure what sort of animal it came from....

After a lake side walk, being hot and thirsty, I stopped in to get a cup of ice. It was free for a small cup, though medium and large cups would have cost 50 cents. The staff here looked bored, until a recent local college grad walked in. They chatted with her, seemed honest to goodness happy that she returned to town, even if it was just for the end of summer. They inquired about her family too. I guess that's what happens when you reside in a small town. Made me feel like I was back in the 60's or 70's, long ago on Mayberry Lane from the Andy Griffith TV show. The small cup of ice (which was more like a large cup) kept me cool on the car ride down the mountain. Sometimes ice can taste awful, these ice cubes tasted fresh, though it was a long twenty four miles down the hill.

Small little hole in the wall convenient store up in Lake Hughes right across from the Rock Inn. I go here whenever I have that have to have pick me up while I'm at my friends house up in the Hughes. Great for those cravings or have to have cold drink. I just wonder how fresh their items are given this is like in the middle of nowhere. The diet pepsi i got tasted old and flat, but its better than driving 45 minutes down the hill to get to something better.
