Dirtiest restaurant. I purchased the food but didn't trust it enough to make at it. Waste of money.

This visit was a little different. We were out traveling in Central California with some colleagues from Europe and we stopped in a small town called Shafter. We wanted to go to a smaller local cafe rather than a chain fast food spot so we stopped at the New York Style Deli. Ive got mixed reviews on this as when you go to a small town diner, you get what you get. Sometimes (most of the times) it is a great experience. This time, I felt that we were not really welcome and that we were more of an annoyance than a customer. There were 5 of us and we each ordered a sandwich and drink. once the sandwiches were made they were given to us but without any notice as to what sandwich was what. We would have to go digging into the sandwich to decide and I personally dont want to eat a sandwich that someone else was prying into so we all kind of stuck with the first thing we grabbed. One of the drinks was wrong (mine) and as I went back up to the counter to let her know , she said that she poured the right drink and I said that it tastes like water not Diet Pepsi and she said that I ordered tea (I am not a tea drinker). I said Im sorry, I would like a diet Pepsi and she changed that out. In the end the food was not bad - the service was a bit rude and maybe because we were not from the small town or maybe the person helping was not in a good mood. I dont think that we will stop back into this business.

If I'm craving a sub sandwich, I come here. They don't skimp on the meat or toppings. My daughter also loves coming here for a sandwich. They know her order as soon as she walks in

The sandwiches here are great! The only downside is the deli is only open on the weekends. You better be hungry though when you eat here. The sandwich is massive. The meats are sliced fresh when you order your sandwich. If you order a house salad its made fresh also. The owners are great and super friendly. Definitely recommend this place. Very clean also.

The sandwiches at this place are really good: fresh bread, healthy portions of meat. The guy at the counter was friendly and I got my order quick. It was $15 for a sandwich, chips and drink, well worth it.

Since I started working at Shafter High School again in August, I have been finding all kinds of hidden gems in this hidden gem of a city. La Fonda, which has locations in Bakersfield, has incredible food from tacos and burritos all the way to full Mexican dinners (oh those beans!). Ralph Fruguglietti's old restaurant Giovanni's is still pumping out some great Italian food (and Thai food?!?!?). And I'm still trying to get over to Tin Cup Coffee for lunch. But after going to Brookside, which sells solid food consistently, I wanted a different sandwich for lunch. Where do I go? Well, Yelp told me to come to New York Style Deli, tucked inside the Frosty King on Central Valley Highway, and I officially have my next hidden gem. Before moving forward, I want to let you know this restaurant can be tough to find. It is just north of Sonic on Central Valley Highway. If you get to Brookside and La Fonda, you've gone too far.I ordered a simple turkey sandwich, and what I got was anything but simple. This sandwich was a legit foot long, and was simply delicious. It was so good and so big, I started by saying that I would just eat the small half of the sandwich because it was so big. Then I thought that since I'm just eating half, I should eat the bigger half. Then I ate the bigger half, then the small half, and then I was sad that there wasn't more.I don't know where the bread came from, but this big crusty roll may have been the best part of the entire sandwich. How many times does the bread ruin the sandwich (I'm looking at you Subway)? Not this time. The sandwich is filled high with turkey and cheese, then put in a toaster oven and heated not to make it completely hot, but just enough to melt and color the cheese just a bit.The toppings looked very fresh. I like a simple sandwich, so I just got mayo and mustard, lettuce, olives, onions, salt, pepper, oil, and vinegar. But there was fresh tomatoes, pickles, bell peppers and more. The sandwich maker then takes his knife and folds the sandwich over and wraps it into the paper before cutting in half.Yum.If I must throw out a couple of negatives, I will mention that the Frosty King is clean -- too clean. It smells like some sort of strong cleaner, which makes me feel great because there is nothing worse than a dirty restaurant, but I don't want to smell the detergent it was cleaned in while I was eating. Also, payment is a bit strange. You order at the New York Style Deli counter, get the sandwich, then take a receipt over to the Frosty King counter to pay. It was empty when I went today, but if it was busy, that could be a pain. But overall, this place is certainly going into my lunch rotation and I can't wait to try other sandwiches!

This place has one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. The bread and ingredients are always fresh and tasty. I love how they still do things the old school way. Cutting your meat and cheese to order

Read all the reviews before I left work for lunch, was a little nervous about trying this New York style deli. I work in Shafter and there really isn't much to choose from... if you haven't tried it, try it.Want a $5 footlong? Subway isn't the only place in Shafter to get one now. And brookside is delicious but I needed a break from there too.

Awesome sandwiches, grinders, subs however you call it. I come here from northwest Bakersfield because nobody else can do it like Sammy can. I like Heidi's and Sequias and Quiznos but this place is authentic style with quality meats and cheeses and the bread, just perfection. Sammy is always here and will make your sandwich to your specs. Prices are low and quality high. I liked this spot so much I had to create a business on yelp to do it, it's that good.
