https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N4BvVHmuloIn the little town of Inyokern, CA, there was a place called the Mayfair Motel. I can't imagine a worse motel...anywhere. Even in Northern Afghanistan, because at least in Afghanistan you'd EXPECT the motel to be, uh, rustic. But by virtue of this place being in California AND being this bad, I proclaim it "The World's Worst Motel."

I had a great stay at the Mayfair Motel last weekend. The room was small but comfortable and cozy, and most importantly very clean. The owners were very friendly and accommodating, and their dog Lazy is super sweet!p.s. while a full breakfast isn't served, they do provide good coffee and pastries

Almost too good to be true! Everything you look for in an overnight accommodation. Hospitable front desk service. They sell snacks, sodas and a few toiletries. This may be the freshest, cleanest motel between Bellingham, WA and Palm Springs, CA. At an unbeatable budget price. Rooms are tiny, but perfectly kept with clean sheets, towels and carpets. The shower was immaculate with good pressure and endless hot water. Secure parking and off the highway just enough to feel quiet without being remote.Truly can't offer a higher recommendation for lodging on this section HWY 395.***They are dog-friendly***

Desperately seeking a place to rest for the night after a long day at Death Valley, we thought we were heading to Kernville to sleep in a nice hotel by the river.Pulled over on the way there to check what the hotel options might be. Prices were about $155 and Kernville was still a good 40 miles more to drive to.Just curious, I decided to check Yelp for what kinds of motels might be nearer. Hurray, a five star reasonably priced one! I called and they definitely had a room for us.Some things we love about this motel:Fridge and microwave, so we were able to heat up some food we brought for dinner, and also keep our drinks cold.Proximity to the Mexican restaurant next door, also highly rated on Yelp. We'll be hitting that for breakfast. The fact that it cost one third what a room in Kernville is going for, and it was six miles from me instead of forty! It has a bathtub. Much needed after the drive through the desert. The gorgeous dog who made eyes at me at the check in counter.

These guys get exactly how to create the best experience in less than 200 sq.. Way to go! Tired and exhausted and knew we are in trouble if we kept going this place was the bomb. Nice clean bed, towels, sheets, floor, bathroom.. tub with super nice hot water.. couldn't beat it. Awesome Mexican breakfast down the street, all you and eat and an unbeatable price. You don't need more.

This is a barebones, no frills, tiny room place! The full size bed takes up most of the space and it is a tight fit getting around with two people. The wall unit nightstands have no lamps and the outlets are few for charging things over night. It is very clean and has good a/c. It is very affordable!

I'm so happy I found this little gem! I like to spend my weekends backpacking up in the Sierra this time of year. I do most of the driving the night before and need a place to rest up for a few hours before getting an early morning start. I had been staying at the Motel 6 in Ridgecrest... which is what you'd expect.... I wouldn't take my sandals off or let my dog sleep on the floor. Then I found the Mayfare!I believe it was Anthony who helped me at the front desk at 1 am. He was friendly and extremely accommodating, as was his pup who came to greet me as well. They are dog friendly which is a must for me, but non-dog people will be happy to learn that they have special rooms set aside for it. Bottom line, I've never seen such an affordably priced motel with rooms so clean and comfortable! I was shocked and so pleasantly surprised! The rooms are a little small, but it's more than you need to catch some sleep on the road. Skip Ridgecrest and stay here at this family owned desert oasis. For $60 a night you won't regret it!

I found this motel through Yelp. Thank God. I used to stay at the horrible Motel 6 in Ridgecrest and am glad I found this place. I travel with dogs and I appreciate motels that don't charge me an arm and a leg for my non-shedding well behaved dogs. This place charges $5/dog.As others have noted, the room is small but it's very efficient. There's no closet but they've created a space to hang your clothes. The bed was nice and firm--no sagging mattress here! I appreciated the welcome basket that contained bottled water because it's hot out in the desert! The room was very clean and the shower flow was good. If you're sitting on the toilet you might think that they forgot to include a toilet paper holder. Close the bathroom door and you'll find it behind the door. That's a little quirky. This place is quiet and the clientele was fine. I felt safe. There's a cute dog in the reception area to greet you and strong coffee to wake you up in the a.m. The one thing I'd change would be to get rid of those plastic enclosed pastries. If I ran this place I'd be baking big batches of homemade muffins & keep them in the freezer to put out in the morning. I guarantee people would remember the Passport Inn and stop by again for another restful night and a delicious muffin in the a.m.UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2019: the motel has stopped accepting dogs. This is very unfortunate for responsible dog owners who leave their room in the condition they found it. However, it's understandable because the proprietors have been abused by irresponsible owners who have left dogs cooped up in the room and not taken out to relieve themselves. The ensuing stench meant that the room could not be rented for several days. Perhaps they could institute a system whereby credit cards were charged, say a $200 dog deposit up front, and upon inspection of the room at check out, the deposit could be reversed or left in place, depending upon the condition of the room.

I've stayed here twice now while driving through and have found it to be the perfect little roadside motel. Yes the rooms are tiny but they are immaculately clean and for $58 I don't think you could really ask for a better place to stay after a long day of driving.
