View from the gas station
For this gas station having outside restrooms, I got to give it to them they're really well maintenance. Greatly appreciated. (7/1/16)

I don't really get into reviews like this but it was kind of ridiculous. Probably the rudest person I've ever spoken to so be aware at this business. Was filling up the tank and went in to ask if there was a public restroom, wasn't busy or jumped in the middle of a convo he was having but right away 'only for customers, no.' Whoah, well sorry for giving you business pumping gas.

I encountered an unfortunate experience at this location, where an employee disrespectfully approached me, insisting on a fee for restroom use.

Heading up the 395 from SoCal, there are really two towns before Mammoth that have any real touristy substance: Lone Pine, and Bishop. Sleepy little Independence, while arguably offering some of the best fishing spots for locals and those in the know (hint: befriend someone from LADWP with gate keys!) there are few options for restrooms, fast food, or even gas stations.Enter this Shell station. Along any other stretch of road, it wouldn't even merit a review. And yet, with not much else in town but residential neighborhoods and a few artsy shops with whim n fancy hours, this gas station/mini mart is a welcomed oasis... Especially if yo have kids with hamster bladders and a penchant for excessive lemonade consumption.Snacks, gas, bait n tackle, an adjacent Subway sandwich place, and an amazing view of the Eastern Sierra highlight this shop. Nice staff that is patient and seemingly understanding that they are, quite literally, the only game in town. Rather than exploit this, however, they wear it as a badge of honor, and treat folks nicer.Love them small towns, son.

Block ice $4 Little high priced but they have it. Good stop for fisherman. Bait, tackle yes. Lower ice price would be nice since our family of 9 bought ice here 7 times (2-3 bags at a time) in a week. Maybe $80 -100 in ice. Too high compared to market at Lone Pine. Get real.

Aside from the very upscale Still Life Cafe across the street, this is the only game in town for the hungry traveler on US 395 in Independence. They are friendly folks who will give you good advice about local sights, camping and fishing holes, as well as sell you all the gear you need. There's a Subway sub sandwich store adjacent to the station for your lunch. Or, they have all the groceries you need along with some camping equipment.
