What a relief to find this place! We stayed at an air bnb nearby and this was our saving grace for being able to eat somewhat normal while away from home. They seem to constantly stock their supplies and you can find a little of everything here. We liked all the taco meat, fresh eggs and pot pies!

We were spending two nights in Death Valley during a recent road trip. Knowing from experience that National Park concessionaires have high prices and limited menus in their dining establishments, we carried plenty of snacks, fruit and beverages with us. We had debated about bringing a loaf of bread, squeeze bottles of mayo and mustard and some lunch meats along with pre-cut lettuce and tomatoes but as usual, plan as we did, we ran out of time. When we arrived and checked out the offerings, we found them even more dismal than anticipated. Fortunately, we had some left-overs from our night in Bakersfield that really helped save our bacon, so to speak. After doing some early morning exploring in Death Valley, we decided to take a drive outside of the park and went to Beatty, where we had breakfast. When we go on road-trips, we like to take circular paths rather than go back the same way we came out so we decided to explore further. We thought about our original thought of bread and fixings so she looked up grocery stores and found Martell Market. What caught her eye was two-fold, that it was literally out in the middle of nowhere AND they appeared to serve Asian dishes. We set up the GPS and began driving. The directions were spot on and we arrived at what I called, their compound. There was the market, another tall building to the side, that at a glance, looked like it might be a garage. We weren't sure and we were really only interested in the market. When we got out of our car, the first thing I noticed was how quiet it was. Other then the sound of our car cooling, silence. It was awesome. We walked up the steps and entered the store and were greeted by a man sitting behind the register. We said hi and began to walk around looking throughout the store. And what a store it was. It had just about everything you might want if you were living out in the middle of nowhere and needed something to eat or drink, or fix your house or car. From fan belts to light bulbs to milk to ice cream to corn husks for tamales and fish sauce to cook Vietnamese food. They had it!When we made it back up to the front, the man had been joined by an Asian woman who also greeted us. We told them what a great store they had and that we were really there to try out their food. Her face went sad when she told me that they had closed the kitchen and restaurant three months earlier because of the lack of business. They explained that COVID-19 drove many other businesses out of town and with no jobs, the employees left as well. With a lack of guests, they couldn't afford to keep their kitchen staff on payroll and had to lay them off. Then her face lit up when she asked if we were hungry? If we were, she would make us something. We thanked her and said no, but she insisted and asked if Yakisoba would be okay. Of course! Very few things I love more than a nice plate or bowl of noodles! She walked away and we began chatting with the man. His name was Ed and hers was Sunny. Husband and wife, they owned the Market and adjoining restaurant, the hardware store (that I though had looked like a garage) and several other associated businesses. We had a great conversation even though we were politically incompatible but fully agreed that free speech was one of the great things of our country.Sunny was gone for about 25 minutes and when she came out, she presented us with two styro clamshells of food. Both were exactly the same and very heavy. She said that she didn't know if we liked seafood or meat so she gave us prawns and chicken meatballs in both orders. She also didn't know what level of spice we enjoyed so she threw in a container of hot chili oil. Forks and napkins completed the order. A custom made dish cooked by the owner cost us exactly $7.99 each. Way cheaper than anything you can find in the greater Bay Area for comparable quality. I can only imagine how good their food would be if it weren't for COVID. Without a doubt, meeting Ed and Sunny was one of the highlights of our road trip. Good down-to-Earth people that offer hospitality and kind words. If you're anywhere near their store, drop by and say hi. We certainly will!

There have only been a few times where I've experienced a truly at-home and welcome feeling in businesses - Martell Market is by far the gold standard this. I was checking out the nearby Big Dune (Amargosa Sand Dunes) when my car got stuck in the sand - 100 F weather - and terrible cell signal. Abandoned by my own insurance company, the towing companies they called - we got in contact with a local tow company that told us to call Ed and Sunny Martell at the Martell Market. Ed spoke with us on the phone and was more than helpful - and familiar with where we were stuck in the dirt. He know exactly where we were which was crazy - but also highlights how often people get stuck here.Alberto and another employee from Martell came in this yellow Jeep to rescue us! And we followed them back to the Market to pay - where I was able to meet one of the owners, Sunny Martell. + TOWING: Two of the employees at Martell rescued us with their 4x4 Jeep Wrangler and were able to tow us out of the sand relatively quickly. If you get stuck here, call this market and they'll be able to help you out - they're too kind - even offered us food/drinks on the way to rescue us!!+ DINER FOOD: Sunny is a super, super sweet Taiwanese lady who runs "Sunny's Kitchen" inside of the market. Her cooking is AMAZING and honestly this wasn't a meal I was expecting in between the border of Nevada/California. I had her chicken chow mein and dumplings - definitely homemade, fresh, and delicious. Could not recommend it more highly. + GROCERIES/OTHER: This market has a wide variety of American, Hispanic, and Asian snacks/staples available. + OTHER SERVICES: While I didn't get to try these (yet) - Sunny mentioned they used to run a dog grooming station, bed and breakfast, and can provide local tours (to nearby farms, scenic areas). + KINDNESS: I cannot stress more highly how kind Sunny was to us. She offered us food once we were there, gave my dog a bone, and even sent us LOADS of bread for the road. In my very broken Chinese, we conversed - and she was very motherly in taking care of my gf and I - honestly kinder than our own moms we joked. Definitely drop by - or call them if you are stuck nearby in the sand dunes - they will not only help you out - but take care of you. I am so appreciative of our experience here and cannot wait to be back again someday!

Stopped into this place after completing the Echo Canyon 4WD trail out of Death Valley. Talk about an Oasis in the desert! Serious A/C on a 95+ degree day was very welcome after four hours on the trail. And the best part: Sunny's Kitchen, a small kitschy add on diner in the back. We were served by Sunny herself and had great burger and fries while we chatted with the owner. My girlfriend and I even left with some swanky handbags! It's clearly the locals kind of place, serving as many needs as it can for the nearby farms. Everyone was greeted on a first name basis and it wouldn't surprise me if they extended credit for those who lived nearby. These sorts of places are what compel me to choose the road less taken. And it makes all the difference.

This market is a total rip off. These people are without any sense of how to run a business. They are very rude. Don't waste your time or money!

Here's a crazy story about how we almost died but Sunny and her family of Martell Market rescued us.My boyfriend wanted to visit the Amargosa Sand Dunes to take quick photos but on the way there his car got stuck in the sand. It was about 100 degrees, we had our puppy with us, and barely any reception. We tried calling insurance/roadside assistance who told us they couldn't help us since they didn't have cars that could ride in the sand and to use branches to get traction under our tires and basically left us there to die. Luckily I was able to call the nearest towing company who told me they couldn't help us either, BUT they knew that Martell Market that might be able to. I was a bit confused but called. I didn't know who I was even talking to at first, but they were so willing to help us - quick to figure out where we were, to send someone out and even offered us food/water! I later found out it was Sunny, her husband, and her nephew/niece who helped answer my phone calls. They were all very attentive and helpful during this time where we thought we'd be left stranded in the middle of the desert. Her husband immediately sent out his employee Alberto and another employee to come save us I was surprised they even found us so quickly. We ended up following them back to the market since we had to pay for their amazing service and actually met Sunny in person. She showed us so much hospitality - fed us some chow mein and dumplings, gave us bread, and our puppy a treat! She's so giving, sweet, and the kindest soul you'll ever encounter. We're so glad we got to meet her in person. If you're ever in the area you need to visit her market! Half of the place is also a restaurant and the food was amazing - you won't regret stopping by. Also if you're ever stuck in Ambargosa Sand Dunes area please call Martell Market for help!! Thank you Sunny and her family for saving our lives, otherwise we could've died out there! in
