Bill Lee's has been a long going staple in Bakersfield since 1938.I remember coming to Bakersfield in the 1970s to visit family for the summer, and this would be one of our go-to spots. Honestly, not much has changed as far as decor goes, I think the only thing that's really changed are the tables and chairs since the booths still look the same. Over the past few years, the menu has downsized considerably, and they no longer offer a lunch special menu. One thing Bill Lee's is Bakersfield famous for is their Mai Tai's, if you know, you know. What keeps me coming back to Bill Lee's is their Chow Mein. I'm a sucker for the way they make it. Their plating has not changed in all the years I've been coming here, and if you paid attention to the beginning of my review, you can guess I passed my younger years a few years back. Getting back to Bill Lee's review. Another thing that has changed is the service. It's not what it used to be. They are not so as attentive as they used to be, and the male host looked like he was getting ready to go ride a fancy skateboard up and down the sidewalk.I understand that over the past recent years the restaurant business and service industry has changed and for an old schooler like me, it's tough to get a grip on. We did get here just after 3pm so it's possible that they were between shifts. I ordered the Mandarin combination plate. It came with the customary bowl of egg flower soup and oyster crackers. My plate consists of Almond chicken chow mein soft noodles, fried rice, three fried shrimp, and three bbq pork spare ribs. My husband ordered the combination plate that gave you a few different options, he chose the pork chow mein soft noodles, fried rice and the sweet and sour chicken. I was satisfied with my dish. My husband said that the sweet and sour chicken was dry due to they use white meat vs dark meat. All in all, Bill Lee's is very consistent with their food. It's nice place to treat your friends and family out to a semi fancy place for lunch or dinner. You don't have to get overly dressed up to enjoy a nice meal at a mid-scale restaurant. They do offer a few American food items to choose from as well, prices start at around $15.00

This is one of our favorite local date night spots! It is laid back and a perfect place to unwind with a nice drink and charcuterie board. The patio is a vibe with the live jazz bands and plenty of space to sit or mingle among others. The servers are always so nice and make sure you are pleased with everything you order. My favorite go-to drink is the Greta Garbo. The sugar rim is the perfect touch to this delicious drink. My husband especially loves the Montgomery Clift. We like to come here before seeing a movie right next door at the Regency Theater. This is definitely a spot to try while visiting town!

Recently came here for a friend's birthday and let me tell you. It brought me back to my party days. This is totally a vibe. There were groups if parties everywhere on a Saturday. First This place is decoration is amazing. It is beautiful! You have to come here on your birthday. It's like being at the club with the music, the lights, the sparklers, the bar cart. If you want that party vibe, come here. As far as food. It was decent. I got the trio fajitas. It was packed onto the skillet. I couldn't really see my food because it was dark but it was OK. It is a shareable dish. Just got another side of rice and beans. My husband on the other hand didn't like the food. He had tacos and didn't care for him. He told them he didn't want spicy and they were still too spicy for him.

The food was 10 out of 10. I enjoyed everything that was brought to the table. We ordered the cojita cilantro salad with grilled chicken and the 16 oz. Ribeye. The chicken in the salad had a great flavor and was warm on a crisp bed of fresh romaine. The dressing was wonderfully cilantro-y (if you are not a fan of cilantro don't get this dressing). The steak came with asparagus and another choice side. I chose baked mac&cheese. The steak was ordered medium and was cooked perfectly. There was a mound of fresh salt flakes next to it that enhanced the flavor beautifully. The steak had a nice marbled effect and it melted in my mouth. This is the best steak I've had from a restaurant in quite some time. The asparagus still had nice crunch and the red onion and cherry tomatoes that had been sautéed with it were a nice touch. The Mac & cheese noodles were the large cork screws and had a nice chunk of melty cheese in the center. The outer edges were more saucy and less cheesy. It was good, but nothing to write home about. For desert we shared the peach mango ice cream served on a warm butter cake with a mango drizzle. The combination of flavors was delicious. The service was great. We felt very attended to. Our waitress was perfectly pleasant and several others stopped by to check in and make sure our experience was good. A couple of strange things happened that we couldn't really explain, like silverware being brought to the table wrapped in paper napkins, then another set of silverware being delivered in linens. The linens were removed and more paper napkins were left in their place. I was a little offended by this. I do not believe this was in anyway meant to be offensive. I'm a linen napkin and proper silverware type of person even at home. The silverware did not match and we were only given a fork, I had to ask for a knife. not ideal. I've harped on way too long about silverware and napkins, dare I mention no table clothes! The ambiance was baffling to me. It was definitely decorated by at least two individuals that had separate visions. It had both warm and white light. There was definitely some loud tables with more of a dance party club vibe and then individuals trying to have a quiet conversation with a nice steak meal. All in all. I'll definitely return when I want a delicious steak dinner.

"I didn't have a lot of high hopes for Bakersfield...we were there on a day trip and were looking for a place to eat. I have a rule, that the farther you get away from Mexico, the food doesn't taste as good. Go to San Diego, it's great. Go to San Jose, not so much...but what about somewhere in between?El Puesto Cocina & Lounge is located in a somewhat run down strip mall. The windows were blacked out when we parked. It looked abandoned. Then you go inside. Like entering the TARDIS, it's bigger on the inside...full of beautiful decor, wonderfully crafted tables and benches, a giant wall of liquors and spirits, and in the back, a stage/lounge area for some nightlife.Luckily we had come for lunch and were given two options: a la carte menu or the brunch buffet for 15 bucks (not including drinks). An all you can eat Mexican buffet? We said yes to that immediately. The buffet wasn't that big, but it had everything you could want...rice and beans, chorizo scrambled eggs, cheese enchiladas, and then the rest of warming trays were filled with all sorts of stewed meats and veggies. On my first round, I tried a bit of everything and while some were better than others, it was all good. The stand out for me was the shredded beef. Perfectly slow cooked, tender, but falls apart when you touch it with a fork. Along with the gravy/sauce it sits in, it was a great bite.At the end of the buffet line was an older woman making fresh tortillas on a flat top. Sometimes she'd give you one right off the grill, but even the ones that were sitting in the warmer for a few minutes were worthy of high praise. My idea about proximity to Mexico was falling apart, but having an abuela make fresh tortillas remained true.On my first visit to the buffet, I did not notice that the other side of the counter was a taco bar where you could make your own street tacos. They only served carne asada and al pastor, but that was all you needed. Even sitting in a warming tray, the meat was tender and still had that crunchy char from the flat top. The red and green salsas, spicier than expected, offered the right amount of heat and acidity to the savory, good kind of greasiness tacos offer. After a second plate, we were so full, but definitely wanted to come back for more.I had both no expectations and all the expectations about this place and Bakersfield coming into the restaurant and all of those thoughts were completely blown away and unproven. Sometimes, take the leap, try something new, and you'll be rewarded."
"Ordered using delivery service and food was still warm and fresh. Amazing flavors in the ribeye tacos. Seriously one of the better things I've eaten. Ribeye could have been trimmed a bit better, hard to avoid a fatty/gristly but I'm a taco bite. I will absolutely be order from here again."
