Umami Sushi

Researched sushi in San Marcos and this one had a high rating from over 200 Yelpers. Sure to not disappoint I thought, but Yelp has failed me this time surprisingly. This place is a 3-star quality restaurant tops. FOOD: Shrimp tempura (2/5) seemed like it came out of a frozen box. Bulgogi-Don (3/5) was decent but the bowl looked sad in terms of their beef ration. The Volcano sushi (3/5) was mediocre even after sitting on its own puddle of oil. And finally, the Double Spicy sushi (2/5) was double the disappointment. The sushi on top felt too cold/icy. SERVICE: The waitress was very nice so no complaints here. LOCATION: It is located in the middle of Texas State University inside a strip mall with plenty of parking. NOTEWORTHY: Relatively cheap, which is probably very attractive to the college kids on campus. But you get what you pay for.

The perfect hole in the wall sushi spot! Such a hidden gem in the heart of San Mar! Nieves never fails to deliver on the service. 100% recommend this joint to EVERYONE. Try the chicken karrage you will not be sorry.

I was visiting the area and really wanted a poke bowl. I looked at a few places and this one has pretty good reviews. I really can see why.The ordering kiosk was down so I placed my order with a server. I created my own bowl with crab and tuna. I added avocado, seaweed salad, and spicy tuna. It took about 10 minutes and it was ready. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious. My server was very friendly and has some good suggestions for the menu.The restaurant is in a small shopping center. The parking wasn't my favorite but I was able to find a good spot.

Came back a few months later and the sushi is just as good as our first experience. Got here mid-afternoon on a Saturday, around 1-2pm, and most of the tables were full.The sushi was fresh and tasty and the cold small plates/appetizers really set Umami Sushi apart from other small sushi joints - the small plates are very flavorful and are similar to dishes you would find at a more upscale sushi restaurant. I also like that they have a good fish to rice ratio, oftentimes sushi that is a good deal or on Happy hour is mostly rice with a small piece of fish but that is not the case here, the fish is a decent size compared to the rice portion.

I dropped in here Wednesday night after having rehearsal nearby. I had read good things about the place and was excited to try it out. I will say I was not disappointed. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, and not very loud despite having several people dining in. Service was great, my waitress, very professional and kind. Their menu has a great variety of food but I decided to order sushi. The waitress recommended the Spicy Flaky Roll and the Firecracker roll, both fresh tasting and delish. This is a place I wish I lived closer to so I could visit weekly. Nevertheless, I plan to be a repeat customer.

I am a regular here. And while I love the food I don't like the fact that when I get here 15 minutes before they close and they have their open sign on, they should serve their customers. Not tell their customers the kitchen is closed.

I LOVE UMAMI!!! me and my friends are regulars there lol. The fish is ALWAYS fresh and so is everything else. the staff is soo nice especially our server Emi, she was the sweetest! and the environment is very chill. Food: 11/10 Overall: 11/10

Service and food was amazing!! Timing was on point, never waited long for refills. Sushi chefs were talented and drawing on the plates, making the presentation and creative plating so much more enjoyable & fun to eat.

I had an amazing experience at this sushi restaurant! The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. The prices are very affordable, making it a great spot for cheap drinks and sake bombs. Our waitress, Nieves, was extremely helpful and attentive throughout our visit. Highly recommend this place!
