Uchi is hands down my favorite sushi spot in Austin. While its sister concepts, Uchiko and Uchiba, come close, nothing quite compares to the original.I dined here on New Year's Eve to celebrate the start of 2025, and as always, it was an excellent choice. The service is consistently attentive, which makes the splurge feel worth it, as this place is definitely on the pricier side. For hot tastings, you can't go wrong with the A5 hot rock which is an interactive dish where you sear melt-in-your-mouth wagyu over a sizzling hot rock. If you're more into cool tastings, the spicy crunchy tuna was my personal favorite, offering a perfect mix of flavor and texture. I'd also recommend trying any of their nigiri selections, which rotate regularly for a fresh experience.I highly suggest making a reservation, as Uchi is typically busy almost every night of the week. They do offer valet parking, but it might be easier to Uber. Also, don't miss out on their daily happy hour as it's a great way to save a few bucks while sampling some amazing dishes that are only available during that time.

Initially, I had come early on a weekday evening and hoped to be seated early (the reservation was for 9 pm). I didn't get to my table, my reservation was originally booked for the sushi bar, until closer to 9:15. The host made sure I was kept up to date on status of my table and decided to sit me in the regular dining since they didn't want me to wait any longer. Once I was seated, Alexis took really great care of me - explaining the menu, sharing her recommendations, and ensuring that everything was up to my expectations. The eel and ocean trout nigiri along with the hama chili dish were my favorites for the night. I perfectly ended the night with the gyutoro - completely melted in your mouth, drooling at the thought of that bite! I ordered about 12 bites total and everything was delicious! I had a lovely time at Uchi and was happy I came during my visit to Austin.

A sad overall update that was due over years of experiencing every other omakase option in the Austin area...Uchi, a once beloved sushi spot for a night out, is now an outdated choice for sushi. It seems uninspired, service has always been either slow or rushed due to the anxiety of the waiters working, and I've had a version of almost everything they offer except better elsewhere. For the price, it's a little cheaper than other omakase options, but not very worth it in the end when you could save up $20-30 extra dollars for a better experience and taste overall. It also seems that management seemed to change or overhaul sometime in 2024? It might be the bane of having a restaurant that has existed in the same area and competing with the likes of esteemed sushi chefs breaking the boundary, but the menu's seasonal bites also are lackluster. Pickled blueberry on an oyster (a past bite, please do not expect that near the time this update is posted) is not that interesting anymore. In reality, going to their sister restaurant Uchiko during happy hour is a better choice and include better desserts most of the time. Oh, and if you're wondering, not much of the staff has any knowledge about wine (which is something I can overlook most of the time, but many other spots have a dedicated sake staff). Not to mention that it is always excessively loud and the walkways are narrow enough to always bother someone if you have to walk to your table or generally get up, it's gotten to be unromantic to eat there. You won't hate the food by any means, but you can definitely find better within 5 miles.

Stopped by here with 2 friends on June 28, 2022. I had never been before, but everyone in Austin has recommended this place. I really like sushi and I must say, this place lives up to the hype. The dishes are small and shareable, but the flavors and textures are unique and exciting. They even have vegetarian options, which is really nice. This is a great date spot, or a place to go for a special occasion. The staff also is really good at recommending what to try based on your diet and preference.

Uchi was such an awesome experience. Me & my boyfriend went there to celebrate my birthday and boy, we loved it. We got the tasting menu curated by our server / chef & they were kind enough to incorporate a ton of vegetarian options for my bf who doesn't eat fish or meat. We both really loved all the items that were served to us, the depth in flavor was awesome. I'd definitely recommend trying the tasting menu. It costed about $140 which was enough for 2 people. The place was packed on the Friday night and the ambiance is very date like, dimly lit. I loved it.

Uchi means house in Japanese, and this house in Austin offers non‑traditional Japanese cuisine such as short rib nigiri :) I am not a big fan of Japanese fusion, but Uchi is an exception. It is a great Omakase experience. Every dish is presented beautifully. Service was great and friendly. It is a popular spot and an ideal space to gather for any occasion such as corporate events, birthdays, and other special gatherings.

This location will always hold a special place in my heart. When i got married at the court house we headed straight here when they opened to celebrate and had a wonderful dinner. We knew that if you didn't have a reservation if you come before they open they have some tables available and we met people doing the same. It was also great because our favorite was the Hama Chili and we knew at the time that was a happy hour item. We also met a nice couple in line and told them we had just married and they bought us a round of sparkling wine and dessert. We've always been a fan of Tyson Cole and the chefs that start off at his restaurants so dining at where it all started was a great experience. My husband has since passed a way so this place will always be a treasured memory. If you are visiting Austin this is a must stop as it's located just across the river from Downtown and food is wonderful - fresh Japanese modern cuisine right in the heart of Texas and where my heart is too.

What a dream! Definitely make reservations, as that helped us get seated right away. Although they have a cute little side bar where you can order drinks and look at the stunning dishes as they come out. We sat at the sushi bar and it was a fun experience. To see all the innovative preparations happening in real time felt like I was in a Food Network special! Our sushi chef was kind and knowledgeable, and offered some great suggestions after he knew what we liked. The layers of flavors and presentation were unmatched. You can't go wrong with anything you get here. Pro tip- ask them what their favorite is and they'll knock it out of the park!
