Love this hidden gem in San Marvelous! After the Alumni game, we hit this place for a nice meal. The Pork Belly and the Pecan Crusted Chicken are two favorites for us. Add the Brussels sprouts and you have a winner. This has more of an Austin vibe, laidback and just a cool place to hang with friends. It's in the heart of the downtown area, which is party city for this college town. Service is good, but remember with it being laid back, nothing happens too fast. Wish this place was here when we were at SWT in the 80's but then again, we were probably too poor to afford such a nice place. Try it when you are in town and Go Cats Go!

I recently went to The Root Cellar Cafe with a group of friends and family, and while I had high hopes for a delightful experience, I was disappointed by a significant accessibility issue that marred our visit.Upon arrival, we were eager to try the food we had heard so much about, but we were met with a set of two steps leading down into the restaurant. Unfortunately, there was no wheelchair ramp or any alternative access for those with mobility challenges. This was particularly frustrating for a member of our party who uses a wheelchair, as it rendered the restaurant completely inaccessible for them.We approached the staff to inquire about any possible accommodations, but it became apparent that they had no solutions in place. While the staff was not too friendly and not apologetic, it was disheartening to see such a popular establishment overlook the importance of inclusivity. As for the food, I can't comment on it fully since we left shortly after realizing the accessibility issue. I genuinely hope the management considers implementing a wheelchair ramp or other means of access in the future, as it would allow everyone to enjoy what could potentially be a great dining experience.Until then, I cannot recommend The Root Cellar Cafe for those who require accessible access. I hope to see improvements made, as I believe this restaurant has a lot of potential.A simple folding metal ramp is affordable and an easy solution a business, hopefully they will take this into consideration.

Staff that's friendly but incompetent.Used to be decent service with better food, but now it's a dumpster fire with a weird habit of seating older white customers before non-white ones. After figuring out they didn't put me on the waitlist at all, and staring at empty tables and others guests be seated for ~45 min. I gave up.

We visited The Root Cellar Cafe on a Saturday after a hike with our two German Shepherds, and it was a fantastic experience! The waitstaff was incredibly friendly, giving us a great table on the patio with plenty of space for our large dogs to lay down. They even brought out a water bowl for each of them, which was a thoughtful touch.I ordered a mimosa, which was delicious and very well priced. My husband had a Bloody Mary, which I felt was a bit overpriced. However, the food more than made up for it. I had the half size biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon, eggs, and toast. The Texas toast with the perfect over-easy egg was delicious. While I think a side order of bacon should include more than just two pieces, none of that mattered once I tasted their biscuits and gravy. They were the best I've ever had! The biscuit literally melted in my mouth, and the jalapeno cream gravy was out of this world. I can't even express how good it truly was!My husband ordered the Hill Country Breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. We will 100% be back!

Simple but great lunch experience. Simple hearty food that was located in a very old place. Gave a vibe of authenticity and homeyness. Everything we had was tasty. Service was good but nothing I'd recommend over other places. Worth revisiting if I'm ever in town.

Stopped in The Root Cellar on our way to the airport. And wanted to have my beet burger!! I get it every time at the Root Cellar in New Branunfels. We have the most wonderful Server in Kendall. She was fantastic and had the best personality. So pleasant and cheerful. She tended to our every needs. I will ask for her any time I come to this Root Cellar. My beet burger today was so fresh and delish. Best beer burger I have ever had. Love the atmosphere in this location too. It is just so nice.

This place seemed busy when we first arrived, so I thought you know it was going to be pretty good. I didn't really enjoy it, the shrimp & grits were pretty basic and it didn't have anything else really & for the amount of money paid for it, I don't think it's worth it. The BYOB, the avocado toast was decent, not much flavor, what got me was the fact that they didn't know what an over hard egg was. I got sent 3 orders of eggs back because they kept giving me runny eggs, by the time I got "over hard" eggs it was just the same eggs all dry from being heated so many times. The host was difficult to find & I had to walk up to the host stand myself, which is fine but it just went terrible. Place is decent, bunch of nice paintings!
