Making pizza in the kitchen of the onion

You know that classic, dive-bar fantasy where everyone knows your name? The kind of place that might be rough around the edges but is overflowing with heart, spirit, and substance? That's The Onion. Sure, the plaster's cracking, and a few ceiling tiles are missing, but the pizza? Absolutely top-tier. Without a doubt, this slice ranks in the top three slices in the entire city.My relationship with The Onion began after long nights of debauchery at the gay bars. Meredith would always compliment my outfits and soon enough, we were on a first-name basis. It's that kind of place -- where connections are made as naturally as the dough they're slinging.Doug and Meredith work harder than anyone I know. For six months out of the year, they're standing in a blistering kitchen, serving up slices of pure gold until 3am on weekends. They deal with long lines of impatient, hungry, and often drunk customers, who probably rarely even recognize the rare quality of what they're shoving in their mouths. And yet, Doug and Meredith do all this with a smile.Trust me when I say that you can completely disregard any Yelp Review submitted with anything less than four stars -- they're missing the brilliance that's right in front of their faces. For reasons that still baffle me, it's tough to find a solid slice in Austin. But look no further: The Onion's got exactly what you're craving. The crust is thin and perfectly crisp on the bottom, yet soft and chewy enough to fold without breaking. The sauce strikes a beautiful balance of sweetness with just the right amount of spice.

Good pizza! We came in around lunchtime on a weekday. Ordered a slice of cheese and sat down at the bench near the window. Good texture, good amount of cheese and the sauce had some kick! I like spice, so this was really good for me. The owner was friendly and helped a few other folks who came in behind us. I'd recommend giving The Onion a try if you are in the area.

Apologies for not snapping a picture of the pizza, because I was hungry! But wow, it really hit the spot after a night of drinking and dancing! It was perfectly crispy and paired amazingly with the ranch. I'd absolutely recommend this place, especially for late-night cravings!

Quick and dirty. When you're a few beers in and are looking for late night pizza, The Onion is a five 5. ("NO MAKE IT A SIX." Thanks, drunk Dan...)When you're sober and you're like "oh. Maybe I'll have a snack. There are many pizzas around but like Southwest, I choose to fly with you, Onion; The Onion is a sobering 2... maybe a 3.I don't know. The last few times I've been in I feel like I'm in a domestic abuse situation. I want to love you so bad but the pizza has been too dry (where's the sauce), and the cheese doesn't really melt nor is it crusty. On the bright side, the owner is super nice. He treats people well so I'll probably be back after a few Zimas.

Doug is the pizza king, slinging delicious pizzas in that kitchen! We were walking down Brazos and 4th after a bar tour and really wanted some food to soak up some alcohol. Not just food, but something a bit greasy and delicious. My wife and I came across this pizza place called The Onion. It didn't look like much walking inside. It had a small standing area, small counter top, but a pretty large kitchen-like area. The smells of pizza cooking helped us make our decision to stay here and get a slice or two.Pepperoni, which is what we wanted, was of course no available at the time to buy and leave but they had just put one in the oven so we decided to wait. While serving others that came in, Doug was super friendly and got to know us a bit. He gave us some great tips about what to go check out during our time in Austin and explained a bit of the history behind The Onion. We finally got our pizza and ended up eating it there while still talking with Doug. This ended up being a really great stop! Come in here for a slice...or two...or three!

I tried calling multiple times on multiple days to place a pickup order during the posted open hours with no answer. The hours on their website are also not the same as the ones their voicemail states. I guess they don't want my business!

This has been a late night staple for years. Always great pizza when you need it after most places are closed. The owners are also very friendly and treat people well. It's not really a dine-in place, but that's kinda what I like about it.

Probably my favorite pizza place in all of Austin. They're open late as well. Just make sure to order over the phone bc they're always so busy.
