For those of us who love a wood-fired pizza being made in the background as the crackle of the wood is burning to create one of the most delicious pizzas in town, then The Backspace is in your future. With an open kitchen and the best seats in the restaurant being right at the bar, get ready for some amazing food and service. A few faves of mine are the fennel sausage, margherita, and a classic pepperoni.Start the table off with an order of their meatballs and some ciabatta that is easy to share amongst your friends and family. The sauce is perfect as a dipping sauce for the ciabatta bread. With a super concise menu you don't have to get lost in making a foodie decision and can instead focus on the warm environment.

I met my brother for dinner in Austin and we were wandering around near his hotel when we happened upon The Backspace. I'm always down for pizza, and they has this amazing brick oven pizza that was delicious! We also had the burrata (yum) and a glass of wine. The atmosphere is cozy and makes for a perfect date night spot. Every single table was full, including the bar. Service was on point and we had a really nice time there! I was pleasantly surprised and glad we took a chance on The Backspace. I will defintely be returning when I'm back in Austin!

We started with a Baked Ricotta...it was amazing but rich! We then ordered one of each : Fennel Sausage and the Roasted Mushrooms pizza. I so missed the roasted mushroom pic .....they were ALL INCREDIBLEHeads up: they have HH 5-6:30....show up early and save on a bottle of wine.

I'd read good things about The Backspace before we went, but I truly wasn't prepared for exactly how wonderful everything would turn out to be!The service was welcoming and accommodating with truly fantastic food! The mains were first-tier, the desserts were excellent, the pizzas were tasty and even the starters were tasty and fun :-)Tip: There's not a lot of seating space within; their capacity is only about 15-20 people, but if you end up waiting, eating here will be worth it

Wow! What an amazing find! I was attending a conference at the convention center and stumbled upon The Backspace. The service was amazing, super nice and helpful waiter. He was polite, accommodating, and knowledgeable. The food was just as incredible. There were 4 of us and each had a different pizza and loved every single one. The restaurant is very small but we arrived right as they opened and had no issues getting a table.

Amazing dinner. Came on a Monday night and Sat at bar. It is a small space so if you want a table make reservations. Hard working staff as the kitchen is behind the bar and open kitchen. We ordered the Caesar salad, lemon wings and sausage pizza. Highly recommend.

I didn't have high expectations of this place. First, it's near dirty 6th. Second, it's downtown. Most of the better restaurants in downtown have a primary focus on beef. The really great restaurants in Austin are outside of the downtown area. From the outside, it looks unassuming and, well, a place you may not walk into. Parking is challenging. If your lucky, you may find street parking close by. Once we walked in, I was pleasantly surprised by the vintage charm and cozy atmosphere. There were three large groups (about 25 people) taking up half the dining room. The other half sat at the bar. There was a large group celebrating a birthday. The place filled with laughter, chatter, soft music in the background and smell of pizza baking in the stone oven.We arrived during happy hour so we ordered every appetizer. We loved all the appetizers. They have only beer and wine. We shared the Bianca and Fennel. The crust was crispy but not hard. The pizza was simple and not greasy. Service, food and atmosphere were excellent. I would have given them 5 stars if the manager didn't tel us that we had to leave because they had a 7:45 reservation for the table we were at. Our server did not bring the bill. A better way would have been to ask if there was anything else we wanted and bring the bill. Take the payment, thank us and wish us a good night. We would have taken the lead and left.Make sure you reserve a table ahead of time. Space is limited. Overall, we had a lovely evening and did not regret eating here.

Came here on a Friday night and good thing that we had a reservation! Because this place is very small, we saw multiple groups without reservations get turned away. The place steadily filled up since we arrived at 6:30 pm and by 7 pm it was buzzing with people. Despite the closeness of the tables, it still felt very intimate. This ambiance was further enhanced by the dim lighting of the room and the simple decor that encouraged patrons to focus on their dinner parties. The two waiters who managed the room were attentive, yet not overly intrusive. They were friendly and shared their favorite food on the menu. We were immediately served water and offered drinks, and the table was already set with cutlery. It was unfortunate that the utensils were wrapped in a paper napkin that although practical gave a bit of a cheap feeling at the start. Luckily, that impression was gone as soon as the food arrived. We shared a burrata for appetizer, which was greatly paired with nutty pesto and olive oil covered toasted bread slices. Then, I had the roasted mushroom pizza, which was excellent and very filling. The ricotta both refreshed the roasted mushroom flavor and added additional texture to the slices. The pizzas were just too big to finish, so I had to take the last slice to go. I will definitely come back to taste the other options!
