Like I said already, corner of W. Ben White and Gillis.
Corner of W. Ben White and Gillis, just look for the sign.
They did some remodeling; can't say I care for color of paneling, but it's somewhat nicer. I'm here for the FOOD anyway.
Taqueria La Escondida is between a Firestone and a Discount Tire; Auto Tek ("my" garage) is just in back (read my review).

"Coca de Mexico". NOT all "frucked' up; REAL sugar! What a concept...
Torta Cubana, closer. Anyone who doesn't like this place is CRAZY! This sandwich? $4.75; GREAT value!

There's TV, usually either a soccer game or maybe some Telenovella.
I've never understood the burglar bars, but these are the BEST-PROTECTED tacos in Austin! (hehe)

I'll come back to try different things, but this current rating is just on the breakfast tacos, which are merely average.I had chorizo and egg on flour. Tortillas were meh. Filing was OK, but not the greatest eggs. Only $2.25 though. On the other hand, the red salsa is fabulous. Tastes very fresh. Nice spice. Good chips.Edit. Won't be back. Just got my bill and they charge for chips and salsa. Come on now. No one does that.

This location used to be a Dunkin Donuts back in the day. And, since it's closure I've never set back into the building until last weekend. The ONLY reason you should dine here is you don't want to sit for hours in the Discount Tire waiting room. That's why the GF and I decided to try it. I'll point out above average salsa paired with mediocre yellow corn chips. Her taco salad for the price was a bit off putting. Minimal lettuce and oversized tomato slices. Two micro slivers of avocado. Cheese applied with tweezers?I had just had a taco salad the day before and it was twice the ingredients for the same price. Had better balance lettuce with diced tomato, huge dollops of guacamole and sour cream. She asked me to mention the beef fajita meat was quite tasty. Mole can be a touchy subject with me. I spent my first 10 years on yelp cataloging every chicken enchilada mole dish in my travels. This one was less chocolate and more spice. More black in color versus deep brown in color I'm used to. Service was MEH.

Conveniently located across the street from discount tire...Small and clean. Very friendly and efficient service. Food is good. Prices are on par. I'll be back, but only when I have a nail in my tire.

Goodness - Gracious - Getting a free tire rotation at Discount Tire (next door). Needed coffee, Saw the restaurant "Blood Lust" and figured the couldn't F up coffee. I had my own cup and it cost. $3.75. what?!! Also, It looks like a prison - dirty, mean, ugly. If they HAD blood lust it would be an improvement

Groovy little dive Mexican restaurant that has been a staple on the south side for many years. Conveniently located between 1st and Congress on Ben White. Easy little spot to stop into if you're waiting on your tires at Discount. My favorite is the enchiladas and the torta cubana. Always a nice authentic vibe jazzy Mexican music playing in the background. Don't let the bars on the windows... This place is legit

The convenience of getting food while waiting to get a tire looked at!My son wanted AC and food; I just wanted to wait somewhere that's not a waiting area. I saw the sign and we headed there without delay. There was a party of 12 and us. It was cold. The waitress was quite happy to see us and made suggestions. The menu was detailed with pictures. The ice tea was strong and the lemonade was fresh. The chicken fajita taco salad was excellent-even the tortilla bowl was crisp and tasty. All was timely and good. The place is not too big and they have booth type seating along with tables. The waitress said they get busy in the evenings. I'd go back more hungry next time!!

The no-frills interior feels very small-town -- not unlike much of South Austin was many years back (like 1980's way-back). The appeal of this place is the food, for sure. A local place to support and love right across from Discount Tire (where also I recommend you tend to all your tire needs!). I usually go for the chicken enchiladas, but my family has ordered all kinds of things. The only thing that has been a let-down was once when a side of rice came out barely warm--usually things are just right. But beware: the salsas vary from spicy to very spicy! P.S. Bonus - they have a drive thru! Works best if you call ahead and pick it up -- always fast if you call ahead!

Ordered the enchiladas al carbon - no meat and not cooked. The corn tortillas were cold and chili con queso was just poured on. Would not ever order again. In order to try to eat the enchilada we asked for enchilada sauce but even that came out cold and was charged 3.00. Crazy. Refill on hot sauce is 2.99 also. Service was not great - never got me a refill on my tea. Had to ask several time for ice for the coke. Ambiance - it smelled like sewage by the rest rooms. Almost $60.00 for 2 person lunch. Not going back. Don't mind paying if food was good or worth it.
