I spend a lot of time around St. Elmo. I frequent a lot of the places in The Yard like Spokesman Coffee, St. Elmo Brewing, and all the food trucks throughout. Until this year, I never noticed right across the street was Vacancy Brewing and the SXSE Food Co food truck.I took advantage of an Austin Asian Restaurant Passport that benefited a local charity, while also promoting local Asian restaurants. SXSE Food Co was one of the participating restaurants, and I wanted to take the opportunity to try Laotian food. The food was solid, with the flavorful sweet and savory balance similar to Thai and Vietnamese food. The skewers were solid but the crispy fried rice was my favorite dish. It had amazing texture with the crispiness and chewy nature of the sticky rice. There's also freshness from the herbs. The dish overall reminded me of the savory sticky rice with Chinese sausage we make in Cantonese cuisine, and the nostalgia made me love it that much more.

Fried rice is often an afterthought, a side or a foundation, not a feature or meal in itself. SXSE Food flips the script and is turning out what is quite frankly the best fried rice I've ever had. It's the only vegan option, but damn, they absolutely nail it. The rice is genuinely crispy, infused with the warm spice of red curry and fragrant herbs like Thai basil, cilantro, and scallions, for a full sensory experience. There's even some coconut for those rich, toasted notes to round it all out. Just be sure to specify vegan because they also have a version with beef. They're parked out at Vacancy Brewing which means you're never too far from an excellent option to soak up that last beer.

Just when I lost hope in finding rich, flavorful and authentic cuisine in Austin, SXSE has entered the chat. SXSE has easily become one of my favorite food trucks in a long time. THE MENU: Not many items are on the menu, but that is more than okay. SXSE focuses on what they do best, and that's a variety of flavored chicken wings, crispy fried rice, skewers, Lao sausage, and pork buns. There are four different wing flavors to choose from and each sound delicious! However, The Spicy Garlic reels me in every time. MY ORDER: The Spicy Garlic wings are tossed in a spicy and tangy sauce topped with fried garlic. SUPER SAVORY! Another honorable mention is the Crispy Fried Rice, which you have to get along with the skewers! I've tried the Ribeye Steak Skewers and I am obsessed with the Jeow Som sauce that goes with it (the Laotian version of the traditional Southeastern fish sauce).

I like everything but it's difficult to give them a 5-star. Crispy fried rice 3.5/5: I look forward to the crispy fried rice a lot because it's a great dish for drinking (we sat down in a brewery next to the food truck). The texture is great. It's fresh and crispy. It's just way too salty. Pork buns 4/5: the buns could be more fluffy. Beef skewers 4/5: it's good but not outstanding. The beef is well seasoned and soft.

While at Vacancy Brewing, we needed a small bite so we tried SXSE. We ordered an hour before closing so I'm sure they were a little annoyed with us and it showed. Once the dude brought us the food, he just dropped it off and left. I felt a little bad for ordering late, but also, they were still open. Anyways, the sausage was great! Fantastic flavor and whatever the sauce was complimented it well! Personally, I'm not a huge fan of mango so I can't add too much two cents on the rice, but I liked what I did try and my friend seemed to like it! I will give this place another shot when I'm in the area again.

I love Bob's Laotian cooking! The wings are flavorful and crispy ( I am drooling just thinking about them again). The larb is perfect with the soft pillowy rice. The sausage with the sauce is perfection. and then i am able to wash it all down with yok yok beer which is rice based. Ordering is easy. He comes out and brings the food to you. it's across the street from the yard so a little more secluded but a great brewery/food truck combo.

SXSE is in my top 3 food trucks hand down. From their service to their flavor to their location. All top notch. Our go to's are usually their wings and ribeye skewers with crispy rice. Their wings are available in 3 levels of spice and our favorites are the garlic flavor. Honestly everything item on their menu is delicious and packed with flavor. You can't go wrong with any selections. We've gotten to where we frequent almost weekly! They are located in the parking lot of Vacancy Brewing which is convenient if you want to have some brews and good eats.

Stopped by on a Sat afternoon. Food arrived quickly. We ordered the sausage, pork buns and the sticky rice. The sausage was the standout. It was very flavorful and came on a big bed of rice. The pork buns were a bit dry and likely needed some kind of sauce but still tasty. The sticky rice was a generous portion but is a bit too spicy for me but I'm sure ppl that enjoy spicy food would like it. The food truck is next to the Vacancy brewing. Their Jet Lag Lager is fabulous. It's worth a visit.

Just recently moved to this part of town. So relieved and grateful there is a spot like this so close to home. The food was amazing. Best meal I've had in a while. I ate at Lao bar but seems like all the food was from this food truck. Had curry noodles, crunchy rice, and the prawns. All excellent. The little crunchy chilis were my favorite part. If you're around do check it out.
