Accidentally stumbled in around lunchtime. There was a line for Talisman Coffee, and another one deeper in for Mums. The bathrooms are behind Talisman. Whole place is very clean. The parking lot was packed on arrival.Got in line for BBQ, ordered The Rachel, 3 pork ribs, and 8oz of BBQ beans. Gave me a number on a stand, said they'd bring it over when ready. Found a place to sit, and admired the paper towel rolls off to the side. The Rachel: the pastrami is cut about the same thickness as the bread, about 1cm thick. There were 2-3 slices. Topped with cabbage that was mixed with dressing. Satisfying bite. The bread crust was pretty hard though, so needed to nibble the edges down a bit separately. Came with a pickle. Would order again.Opted for three pork ribs, about 0.75 lbs. Ribs dimensions were something like 1.5"x1"x6", nicely seasoned, slightly sweet, and you could taste the spices on the surface. Pickles, onions, and bread complemented the meat well. Would definitely come back for more.8oz BBQ Beans: these were on the slightly creamier side, though I'd probably like them a bit more done. They with bits of meat. Unfortunately, they could have been seasoned a bit more; they were bland in comparison to the sandwich and ribs. I'm also not sure exactly what flavor they were going for, since it was neither sweet, savory, smokey, meaty, or sour. It was just bland beany. I'd probably opt to get a different side next time.

I really should've went with their speciality their sandwiches and am regretting it now. The BBQ was fine and tasted yummy; I got the two meat plate (Brisket and a pork rib) and ate everything including the sides. I had smoked meats in Montreal and would say this is not as good as smoked meats in Montreal but the meat and quality is definitely a step above Rudy's which to me is a good baseline to compare BBQ. I would rank them slightly below slab (for the rib)or stiles (for the brisket) and not close to the more well known and publicized bbq joints. It's more salt than pepper for their rub and couldn't really tell what kind of wood the meat was smoked with kind of neutral. The brisket was lean but stayed moist. The ribs were tender but not fall off the bone.I got the slaw which was not a creamy or vinegar slaw mostly cabbage with a salty and slightly tangy sauce and the potatoes had an orange tinge to it - not really sure what made it orange - It was tasty though. Since everything was salt forward - the pickles and the onions definitely cut the saltiness. Also came with a couple pieces of white bread - which were slightly thicker slices and not the supermarket variety so a step up. The BBQ sauce was slightly sour but leaned sweet. At least for me - BBQ was just fine just not what I would say is their speciality. But I feel like if I just went my gut instead of reading these reviews about life changing BBQ and got the pastrami sandwich this might have been a 4 star review.

We decided to get here right when they opened on a Thursday and there was plenty of parking in one of the 25 spots. By noon they were all taken. As you're walking through the door you'll spot the large smokehouse to the left and the coffee bar to the right of the entrance. Basically, you place your order at the counter, take a number and they will bring it to your table. The interior is pretty much no-frills, but the price of the barbecue is a little upscale. My friend got the highly recommended Rachel pastrami sandwich and I opted for the trifecta three meat plate. The sandwich was piled high and was well worth the $17. You get a good size link of sausage with the three meat plate, but only one rib and two small slices of brisket. At least they give you some generous sides, which are also quite good. However, the coleslaw tasted like it was from the day before and I only ate half of it. The beans had a fair amount of brisket added in. The rib had a sweet and salty peppery crust to it and fell off the bone. On the table, there's a roll of paper towels along with their vinegar based barbecue sauce which is decent. I have to admit their barbecue definitely approaches the five star range and is some of the best I've come across in quite a while. I got a half pound of turkey breast to go and it was super moist and fairly salty. They have eight beers on tap, some mixed drinks, free ice water and sodas in case you're thirsty. If you're in search of some really good barbecue in this town, definitely add this place to your list. Keep in mind they're only open from 11 AM till 3 PM five days a week. 10 photos included for more insight. 41/2*

Awesome BBQ spot located in East Austin! We had quite a bit of items here and for the most part, all were really good! Sides - they were okMac n cheese - bland and lacks a lot of any flavorCollard greens - really good. I'm not a huge fan of collard greens and these had a nice flavorMain dishes - where it is at!Rachel sandwich - 10 out of 10. The flavor on this sandwich is outstanding. Best pastrami sandwich I have had in a long timeBrisket - extremely good and perfectly cooked. Their bbq sauce on the side is also really goodDefinitely recommend checking this place out if you are in the area and looking for good BBQ!

Found this place on Yelp when craving some Jewish deli style food in Austin. I grew up in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood back in NYC, and Mum's is a fantastic take on the traditional foods. The added BBQ flavor layer adds a welcome flavor to the timeless classics.

I'm a huge bbq fan and I've been wanting to checkout Mum foods for several months and we finally made it to east austin yesterday to try it. We got there around 1:30 and their small parking lot was full so we parked on a side street and didn't have to walk far. There was only 3 people in front of us in line which is awesome as most good bbq places have you wait a good 30-45 minutes. We researched ahead of time to see what people were raving about and decided on the Rachel (sandwich), a 2 meat plate with ribs and brisket and collard greens and chips with pimento cheese as the two sides. They had a special that we strongly considered changing our order for and it was a 1/2 sandwhich so we could still try and rachel and their famed matzo ball soup. We were worried we'd fight over the half sandwich and it was hot as hades outside so we stuck with the full rachel over the special. The rachel was really good and one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had. I think we did well choosing the two meats too as despite what some people were saying about the brisket in reviews, we really enjoyed it. It had slightly different flavor than most bbq spots but not necessarily a bad thing. The pork ribs were also really good...they didn't fall off the bone but they came off easily and the bark on them was spectacular. My fiance said the collard greens were the best she's had and the chips and pimento were decent but I'll probably try something else next visit. The regular cheesecake was really good and almost worth the visit by itself. The graham cracker crust and richness were the perfect end to our bbq lunch.

Located in east Austin, off Manor Rd sits the exciting Mum's Foods Smokehouse. This place opened back in December 2022. This place serves a wide variety of items on the menu from their famous smoked pastrami, smoked turkey, carved sandwiches and bbq plates. They serve a variety of sides like the pimento cheese & chips, collard greens, & matzo ball soup. Also as a delicatessen they serve different types of cheesecake and cookies for dessert. The location is in its own building with a small parking lot. Mum has a very simple interior but feels like a true east Austin style place. No huge lines on a weekend so you can get served fast. Service is very friendly. Plenty of indoor seating and a very chill atmosphere. Speaking with the staff, they say the famous Texas Monthly's Daniel Vaughn says this place is considered the best pastrami in Texas, which is a bold claim. I had a 2 meat plate of brisket & ribs. I thought the meats were smoked well. Brisket was tender, spare ribs felt cooked well. I want to point out this place has more of a leisure style smoked flavor to it. When it comes to Texas bbq, many places go overboard on seasoning, where you taste that strong pepper bark for hours later. Mum's seasoning is fine but it just doesnt have the bold pepper flavor that several other locations are known for. I like the bold pepper taste, but as I said, this bbq is still cooked well. Jalapeno & cheese sausage also has a solid flavor to it. Sides were good but nothing amazing about them. Mum's is a solid place and I will come back to try their different sandwiches. It has a chill atmosphere, wide variety menu and very friendly staff. Its hard to break my top 5 bbq list in Austin with all the tremendous competition out there, and this place didnt make that top 5, but I would still recommend this for a good spot in the city.

Mum Foods is LEGIT! It had been on my list to try for a while and it didn't disappoint... delicious food and fantastic service at reasonable prices. A triple threat! They sell out so be sure to visit earlier in the day if you can! I visited on a whim at 1:45 pm on a Wednesday and they were sold out of brisket, pastrami, ribs, and a few other things and then we got the last of the turkey.SERVICE - The gentleman who took our order was pleasant and threw in a free cookie for each of us because we had to wait (the guy ordering in front of us took a while). He also came by mid-meal to see if we had everything we needed and cleared empty trays quickly from our table.PRICING - The total was $32.40 after tax and before tip for 2 smoked turkey on rye sandwiches ($15 each). I felt like the pricing was reasonable for the quality of product and portion size.FAST FACTS:*Parking: free lot in front of the building but can be tight when busy*Order at the counter and then grab a seat*Delivery available through DoorDash*Shared building with Talisman Coffee*Closed Mondays and TuesdaysSMOKED TURKEY ON RYE (9/10) - This was some of the BEST turkey I've ever had... the slices are cut super thick and you can see how moist it is before you even take a bite. It's so juicy but also has tons of flavor (which is rare for turkey). The rye bread was toasted nicely and the lettuce, tomato, and pickled onions were the perfect addition. I asked for the mayo to be subbed for mustard but my sandwich was served with mayo... oh well. You get a pickle spear on the side which is always appreciated!RYE FLOUR CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE (10/10) - Okay, the cookies were given to us for free but I'd pay a fair amount for this cookie the next time I'm there because it was that good! It's a great size, the chocolate chips are plentiful, and there is the perfect amount of salt to play off the sweetness. The cookie is so soft on the inside and super thick... my perfect cookie! The food came out within about 10 minutes of ordering so the service was quick. I'll definitely be back (earlier next time) to try some of the other meats (I'm looking at you brisket and pastrami) because if Mum Foods can make turkey taste that good, my taste buds are not ready for the rest of the menu!

I went to Mum Foods 2 days in a row. Great service and a really clean establishment. The food is amazing and the quality is top notch. I would gate keep this place if I lived in the state of Texas. The pastrami and the brisket were so flavorful and smoked perfectly. This is my new favorite restaurant. I wish there was something similar in San Francisco or the Bay Area in California...Please consider opening there!!!
