Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area I had the great pleasure and benefit of being exposed to a number of cultures at all times. This probably is what later led me to go to college and graduate with my degrees in Anthropology. So all that being noted, I always enjoy being able to find authentic places that properly reflect a culture and allow me to take an active part in that culture.Years ago when I lived in West Seattle I had a favorite carniceria and when I moved to Austin I honestly and genuinely missed the hell out of that place. La Michoacana on Stassney does an amazing job of filling that gaping hole in my life and has some amazing food you won't soon forget. To start, this place is a very well stocked carniceria with all the usual authentic Hispanic meats, cheeses, deserts and all the fabulous ingredients you could even need to make that amazing Latin food you desire. Secondly, they have hot foods ready for you to drool over that will make you feel just one step closer to heaven, simply amazing, authentic and affordable food. I personally have a huge weakness for their chicken tamales, which are hands down probably the BEST I have ever had. Never dry and nasty, always full of a smoky, fresh authentic flavor. I highly recommend these banana leaf wrapped little pieces of perfection. You can ask for them at the deli counter, get em' cold and take em' home, toss em' in the microwave for a couple minutes and BAM!! the perfect dinner!!For a great and interesting meat selection, for great authentic flavors and for a little bit of culture in your life check this place out. You can't go wrong.

OK. I would not suggest eating in this place. there are numerous taco stands that are in the neighborhood that are delicious and cheap.. that being said, this place will get 4 stars based on the fact that the meat is beautiful, plentiful and has some of the best prices i have ever seen. Example: I bought 3 HUGE T-Bone steaks, 2 inches thick for 14 bucks. CRAZY delicious- grilled up quite nicely . I also bought the Stuffed jalapenos w/ cream cheese and bacon and the marinated chicken. All of it was beautiful, tasted fresh and was super convenientThere's not much in the way of customer service. Don't get me wrong- they are not rude in the store, just not particularly pleasant- but the butcher selection is so marvelously grand that you can't help smiling as you leave anyway.Try it out. You wont be disappointed.

The fajita meat here is really delicious. The marinade put on make the color of the meat "yelp red" and it grills up real nice. The other marinated meats like the pastor are also really good.I wouldn't do my daily shopping here; items are expensive and the quality of the produce isn't the best but if you go for the meat and get yourself a Mexican Fresca to go then you're ahead of the game.

The food there is good, can't complain. The cooks talk in a bad way to the cashiers. I was eating there & I saw a like a few roaches by the kitchen, I had to throw away my food, cause it was disgusting.

I would give them thumbs down!!they don't have much to choose from and the breakfast you pay 5.99 for something a 10 year could make at home. I had bought a breakfast plate which is three tacos, when I went to order the lady said they didn't have any more food for breakfast. They could of replace any meat for the breakfast one. I thought for sure they would honor the fact that no one told me that before I paid. They did not even the manager was rude and acted like he did not care. He told me to go back to the cash register pick something else and pay the difference I left. Never went back.

Prices are good but don't go in for a small purchase unless you have cash. $5 minimum on a card and no hot tortillas by 6:30pm. You're better off going to HEB.

Extremely disappointed with the small taqueria within this market. First off, missed breakfast tacos (noooooo!!! eat 'em any time of day). Second, I made the horrible mistake of ordering fajita quesadillas. Uh, I have had quite a score of quesadillas in my day and in no way was I expecting the stiff deep FRIED empanada-wannabe crisp of a thing with hot lava cheese oozing out AND fajitas on the Side! WTF!?! - I was a pissy "chiflada" (as mom would say, brat). Don't mess with my quesadilla, man. Should have first looked at it in buffet looking case before mama ordered it. Man! what a waste for last day in Austin. Rest of food reminded me of bad greasy food we had in Monterrey, Mexico. Not the best of Mexico. Sorry papa. I'm sure other Michoacana''s are better.

I delivered seafood to this place. The Butcher wanted me to walk through 2 inches of blood on the floor behind the meat counter to put the fish in the meat locker. He thought it was funny to make someone else walk through blood. I did so and annoyed opened the meat locker to find the slaughtered meat sitting in a pile inside the meat locker ON THE FLOOR. THE MEAT WAS ON THE FLOOR SITTING IN ABOUT THREE INCHES OF CONGEALED BLOOD STACKED UP. There was no place to put the fish so I placed the box of fish on the bloody meat. Left with blood all over my shoes and socks and the employees laughing. I was pissed and had to make other deliveries. The next time I delivered to this place I refused to walk behind the counter.I refused and the butcher became infuriated and wanted to fight me outside and complained to the manager and told him it was illegal to have that much blood in a food area. He did nothing. So I called the Health inspector and turned them in.
