The food here was amazing. The people were very friendly. We let them know it was our first time and they made sure my mom and I had a great meal.

THIS IS THE BEST BBQ PLACE EVER. All the workers are super nice when you order and the brisket is AMAZING. The bathrooms are pretty small (only one stall) and not the cleanest, but I've definitely seen worse. My friend had lamb ribs which she's never had before and said they were to die for. When you walk in it does give like gas station, cafeteria vibes, but really, don't judge a book bye it's cover. It's also in the cutest town!

Move over, Elgin hot guts. Both Southside Market and Myers have reduced the spiciness of their "hot" sausage to the barely warm level. The sausage here is not as hot as the Southside hot guts of my youth 60+ years ago, but it definitely has a kick. The grind is coarse enough that you actually have to chew, and the flavor is well-rounded. In short, it's better than anything you can get in Elgin today. The pork ribs were meaty and tender and although they could use more smoke, were very good. The two-meat plate with a generous serving of sausage, three ribs, two sides, bread, pickles, and onions was very reasonably priced at $13.99. Definitely a go-to place in Gonzales. FYI, I worked at Southside in the late 50s and early 60s, so I know a thing or two about hot guts (AKA sausage).

When writing reviews I try to take three factors into consideration. These are, Location, Price, and Food quality. In order to provide readers with a fair balanced review of an establishment I try to balance these three things. The Gonzales Food Market is in the historic district of downtown Gonzales, and one look around will tell you that the aim of this place is to preserve the old fashion historic feel and ambiance. The Gonzales Food Market holds true to this genre. From the moment you walk in, you feel like you have stepped back in time a few decades to a simpler time. We arrived just a half hour before closing, but they still had plenty of food ready to go, even though there were not many people left in the restaurant. The staff was polite and it seemed as though they were tired from a long hard day, which is to be expected at that time. We were served promptly and found a table in the back to sit down at. I was surprised at the low price we paid for Texas BBQ, which tends to run on the pricy side. The food was good for the price and we got plenty to eat. I got the half Chicken plate and my wife got the Lamb ribs and Brisket plate. Everything was good except for the lamb ribs were nothing but pure fat with no sign of any meat. It may have been the time of the day and this was all that was left, but it was what it was.Aside from the lamb ribs, the place could use some maintenance and brightening up. It is one thing to keep the rustic historic feel, but it does not mean that things need to look run down to achieve that. With a little spit and polish and some good lighting, this place could feel a lot warmer. While the food is decent for the price, the general feel of the place does not incite the feelings of wanting to go back. I probably will, but I am saying this for the owner's sake to give them some advice on how they can improve this business.Bottom Line: I think the Gonzales Food Market is a good place for some reasonably priced Texas BBQ. It seems like a nice little family-run business and I wish them the best.

We were hungry so it did the job. The customer service was kind and they were quick. Kids liked the Mac n cheese but everything else was just mediocre. Meat sauce had a strong vinegar taste. Say no to peach cobbler.

If only I could rate this with zero stars... I would. I'm guessing the only reason this place is still in business is that the health inspector is either family or a vacated role with the county. This place is in a neat old building downtown Gonzales and the walls are adorn with articles, of a time clearly in the past, about a once cherished restaurant. But that's where the charm ends. We stopped in after working all day and a big hunger for bbq (the other amazing bbq restaurant in town was closed). At first glance the food looked questionable but I put all my intuitions aside, deciding to go ahead and give it a shot. After all, the sausage looked legit. We both ordered a three meat plate with ribs, sausage and brisket, then moved down the counter to sides. The not-so-friendly staff slopped the sides on our plates and seemed to be generally annoyed with our presence. Next, we fill our drinks at the tea station from some dirty old tea pitchers. Finally, we sit down in the back dining room where a tv was on along with music playing loudly over the tv creating an echo chamber worse than CNN.Time to eat quickly and get out of this nightmare. I could only describe the flavor as something post apocalyptic. As if it had been cooked over a trash barrel with absolutely no seasoning. Not a hint of salt or pepper and all of it dried out like three day old roadkill. After a few bites of stringy ribs and leather-like brisket, we decided the sausage might be the only saving grace. Unfortunately, that link tasted like a casing stuffed with potted meat product... pure mush. I tried to eat a slice of cheese only to find it was hard on the edges, tasted moldy. We dumped our full plates in the trash and left with a $40 lesson learned, to never come back. I forgot to mention the sides, but as you might guess, they aren't worth mentioning anyways.I write this with all sincerity as I sit on the toilet, with the the worst shits I can recall... but I can only blame myself for not following my intuition. The only thing you might "come and take it" at this place in Gonzales is a case of food poisoning.

I was camping at Palmetto State Park. I got a craving for BBQ the second day I was there, so I went to Yelp to see what was there. I actually had about four choices since the park is close to both Lulling and Gonzales. I checked the menu of all of them hoping to find one that sold lamb ribs. I nearly did some back flips when I saw that, not only does GFM have them, people rave about them in the reviews. I decided that I would go the next day for lunch. In order to earn the privilege of eating BBQ, I got up early to beat the heat and hiked about eight miles on the trails of the park. I got back to the camper, showered, and hit the road for Gonzales, which is only about 12 miles from the park. I got there at about 10:45.GFM is downtown on the square. I was kind of surprised to see that the downtown area was nearly deserted. When I lived in the area close to 30 years ago, there was a lot more action downtown. Now with the growth on the highway, I guess people don't go to the square that much. Maybe closer to noon, it picks up.I ordered a half-pound of lamb ribs and a sausage link. When I lived in Waelder in the 1980s, I got some really delicious sausage at a BBQ place that is no longer there. It was juicy and, for lack of a better word, grainy. When I saw the sausage at GFM, it looked like the same king. I was thrilled when I took that first bite. It was exactly what I remembered. The lamb ribs were amazing. They were juicy and greasy with a crisp outer surface to them. The watery BBQ sauce they had on the table was the perfect finish to each bite.I didn't get any sides, except some onions and two slices of bread. But, they had some nice looking choices. The desserts looked amazing as well. But, since I only walked 8 miles, I didn't earn dessert.I will be stopping into GFM from now on during all of my stays at Palmetto State Park. Next time, I want a slice of pie!

Don't expect excellent BBQ here. The Chopped brisket sandwich is okay but everything else is like overcooked and outdated.
