I went a few days ago with a friend of mine after seeing a Comedor chef on Chopped. We decided to try every item on the happy hour menu, and it was a delightful feast! The Cobia Crudo was a standout--so delicious that we kept rescuing the bowl from the server just to savor every last drop of the leftover sauce. My favorite was the Lengua Taco. With its minimal ingredients, it reminded me of the barbacoa tacos from my Mexican-American upbringing--simple yet incredibly flavorful. The quesadilla, on the other hand, wasn't quite to my taste. The cheese had a strong, funky flavor that didn't quite hit the mark for me.The Bone Marrow Tacos were the most fun dish we had. The marrow was rich and paired perfectly with the greens provided. We arrived right as they opened, so the atmosphere was quiet and comfortable. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'd definitely recommend Comedor for their happy hour offerings.I'm looking forward to going back to try some of their entrées.

I'm not even sure what I just experienced but it certainly wasn't something I want to repeat. First, can barely read the menu, had to ask waiter what everything meant. Then, their options are just strange. Many just aren't appealing. Ended up getting the hummus as app and meatballs as dinner. The hummus was...interesting? It was plated in a large deep bowl served with raw beets and green beans and large crackers. So strange and very unappealing. I love hummus but I don't want to eat it with a raw beat. And the crackers were tasteless. I'm really not sure who thought that would be good to put on the menu. The meatballs themselves were fine but the grits they were served with were completely tasteless. I don't even think they were salted and they were sort of undercooked I think because it was a little hard/crunchy. Also the restaurant is super dark. I love a moody ambiance but it was way past that. In summary: I think they're trying so hard to be edgy and different that they go to far and lose the plot.

I have visited Comedor a handful of times. The food is always a hit and their cocktails are equally as delicious! Whether at a booth with friends or alone at the bar - the service is always excellent and not at all standoffish as some might assume.Comedor has dark, swanky vibe along with brighter outdoor season. Their elevated Mexican menu is always changing - it's fun to explore it as they rotate dishes! One staple is the bone marrow tacos - as I'm sure you've heard by now.I particularly enjoy sitting at the bar for their happy hour. The bar staff is super animated and friendly - and their happy hour specials are excellent! I'll load on on a few tacos and a couple of drinks for what is relatively a steal.

I met a friend here for happy hour and I was absolutely taken away. It was a little hard to find as it's tucked away but the inside was so nice! We sat at the bar and our servers were so friendly and attentive. We got a couple of mocktails, the crudo, and bone marrow tacos. I cannot begin to describe how amazing the food was. There's also a patio area that they opened up from the inside since the weather was nice out. I can't wait to come back and try the dinner menu!

We recently celebrated three friends' birthdays at Comedor, and the experience left us with mixed feelings. While the restaurant has a moody yet fun vibe, the overall experience didn't quite meet expectations for such a special occasion. Here's a breakdown of our evening:Food - We ordered nearly all the appetizers plus a few mains and the standout was the tostada--crisp, flavorful, and a highlight of the meal. However, the much-lauded bone marrow fell short of its reputation, being just okay. The bean dish lacked the depth and flavor we hoped for, and the $70 barbacoa was neither memorable nor disappointing--just fine. For the price and hype, we left uncertain whether we'd return for these dishes.Service - The service was earnest but lacked polish. One celebrant ordered an expensive bottle of bubbly to kick off the festivities, but the restaurant didn't have champagne flutes, which was understandable - maybe it was a busy night. However, the server poured unevenly, leaving us to redistribute the wine among glasses ourselves--a rookie mistake that aggravated the celebrant.Adding to the frustration, the balloons we brought to make the evening festive were confiscated upon arrival. We were told they couldn't stay at the table, which felt like an unnecessary rule that dampened the celebratory mood.On a positive note, there was a birthday card for the celebrants at the end, though we're unsure if a dessert was comped.Atmosphere - The interior is stylish and atmospheric, perfect for a night out. The restaurant's moodiness adds to its charm, but unfortunately, the service and minor missteps detracted from the overall experience.Parking - Street parking and garage options are conveniently located nearby, which made arriving hassle-free.Final Thoughts - While there were some enjoyable moments, the combination of underwhelming dishes, service hiccups, and strict policies left us feeling like it was an off night. Comedor might deserve another visit for its ambiance and potential, but for a celebratory evening, it didn't quite hit the mark.

Comedor is an inconspicuous Mexican-inspired restaurant in downtown Austin. For a few years it was a frequently mentioned high end restaurant that was also common for corporate events given its proximity DT. Parking is limited; there's a pay garage and valet right next door or you can potentially find street parking a few blocks north. The ambiance is very "mood", dark lighting and intimate. The finishes inside are nice and it feels very much like an upscale date night. The food was a mix between good and very good (but not necessarily "great"). I heard their bone marrow tacos were one of the best on the menu and gave it a shot but didn't leave that amazed. It felt a bit overly oily and salted; the mouthfeel was distracting. The pescado tacos were very good, along with the grilled carrots and avocado tostada. Service was very good; the server was sweet when I went 0/2 on desired drink orders so she comp'd me a tea.Expect to pay around $100pp for food and drink to leave satisfied.

We stopped by here for dinner during our trip to Austin. Overall good food and a fun atmosphere, but not our favorite restaurant We started out with the avocado tostada and Patatas bravas. Loved the avocado but the Patatas were underwhelming. We ordered a quesadilla which was very fresh but also was not our favorite. The best item we ordered was a recommendation from our waiter, the half chicken. Cooked to perfection and a perfect shareable meal. The sauce was a great addition and it came with tortillas to make tacos. Overall, just an ok restaurant. Service was amazing, we didn't order drinks but they had a fun menu. And food was good

The location was a bit tricky to find at first, as the sign blends so seamlessly with the wall, but once I stepped inside, I was immediately taken aback by how stunning the place was. It had such a welcoming, vibrant vibe that made me feel very luxurious. I was recommended the bone marrow tacos, and let me tell you, they did not disappoint absolutely delicious! Our waitress was fantastic, too; she made us feel incredibly well taken care of and offered some of the best recommendations. A truly memorable experience all around!

Started with the avocado tostada, which had extremely fresh avocado, mushrooms, tasty broccoli, and a great crunch to the tostada. We got the bone marrow tacos, which were my favorite thing. The bone marrow is so flavorful, the tortillas are nice, and the sauce is great. Really unique dish. We then got their half chicken, which had a perfectly crispy skin and was good but a bit hard to cut and eat. On the side we got their papas fritas which were excellent. Super crispy and the aioli paired very well with them. Really sleek and upscale atmosphere. The service is attentive but not in your face. They explain every dish very well. Would definitely recommend. 4.8/5
