Best hospital cafeteria food I've ever had. And the one chef cooks it all. Food is fresh, hot, and tastes great. I had scrambled eggs, bacon, and a biscuit. All perfectly cooked. Everyone working there is friendly. And the prices are more than fair. I saw many doctors and nurses either eating in the cafeteria or getting food to go. In a heart hospital, that's good enough for me.

I first went by today and was not impressed. Very small and not many choices. I went back later and asked for a fresh made roast beef with pepper jack cheese and heated. I snagged a few jalapeño slices from the salad bar (no charge), paid and started munching. It was quite good! I was sitting next to some hospital staff who were downing tamale pie. They said that it does look weird (terrible looking to me) but it is absolutely delicious. I didn't try it so I can't confirm. However, I do admit my first impression was wrong today.

I was about to head over to Central Market for sandwiches after my son was out of surgery with great results at The Austin Heart Hospital when I noticed the Nurses and Doctors going into a small cafeteria. My husband and I decided it would be better to stay close at hand. We ordered turkey sandwiches, and then the cafeteria lady said that we had to try out the Gumbo that they had just prepared. She also suggested the homemade chicken and dumplings. My husband had the gumbo and it was delicious. Our 2 sandwiches with fries, gumbo and two soft drinks came out to $11.21 with tax. (our hospital bill was $80K so we needed a break on restaurant expenses) I will be ducking into the Austin Heart Hospital for future meals on the cheap. P.S. They had a lovely red velvet cake at $1.50 slice. You just can't beat that. I'll admit the food may not have all been heart healthy but the people who work their were really kind and the food was tasty.

The food in the cafeteria at the Heart Hospital of Austin is really good and reasonably priced. I have not been in the area in a while, but they used to have baked fish on Fridays that was good enough to keep me from eating the (equally delicious) fried shrimp. Give it a try!
