"My mai tai came out in a Chinese take out container. Very cute and tasty. Had the brisket wantons for app and they were very cream cheesy and not so much brisket but they were good. My aloha burger with the grilled pineapple was very good. I got the truffle sauce on the side and ditched that in favor of they had 2 other homemade dips... spicy something and a ranch.. Oli would ask for those. The sweet potato waffle fries were a little too skinny so seemed a little well done. Good taste though."
"Really cool place. Some friends and I needed a place to go for brunch this past Sunday. We used open table to get a reservation because we were unsure if thee would be a wait which by the time we left there definitely was.So the space. Amazing / Stunning/ Great LayoutYou walk in and you are immediately in inside their vibe. The staff all greeted us as we walked in which was very nice. We asked for an outside table. They didn't have a lot of unbrellas out so it got a little warm. Yet we asked our server and he immediately was yes of corse. After that it was perfect. We ordered drinks no app's coffee to start. All were amazing. Coffee had great flavor and the milk sub they had was almond. ( I had asked for oat but no luck)Table had a espresso martini, bloody Mary their (house version), mimosa. All were amazing. Took a bit to get out but like I said the place was getting busy. Now the food.We ordered a few things.from French toast to a burger. Everything was amazing. The star of the show was the potatoes for every plate we had them on. You know how some times you order them as a side and they are mushy or soggy. NOT HEREthey were all amazing. from little cube kind to fry sized all cooked to perfection.I would love to give this place a 5 start but like I said they didn't really have a lot of options for milk alternatives, but that could have been a day thing. We will definitely be going back to check out their sister space URBAN Rooftop."

"I can't believe it took me so many years to finally dine-in at Juniper. I had ordered take-out here during Covid and fallen in love with their cacio e pepe. I was excited to return for my birthday. I loved everything about this place - what a hidden gem in Austin. This place has elegant and minimalist decor, with a large open kitchen which is delightful to watch, and excellent service with attentive staff through and through. Our food was incredible - every dish we tried from the appetizers to the entrees to dessert. The only one aspect they could improve upon was their cocktail menu but I'm guessing their bigger focus is on their wine selection. And oh, I was a bit surprised at the dog seated inside (hygiene and all). That pea risotto was out of this world and the puffy potato fritters as well as the eggplant appetizer were mouth-watering delicious. The cacio e pepe was also as good as I remembered it to be. Once again, I renew my request to add a fresh vegetable side (the asparagus was not vegetarian) to complement the carb loading. But, hey, I'm not complaining when the carbs are this gratifying."
"Went here on a whim one night bar hopping around East 6th Street. It was in the middle of the holiday season and they decorated the restaurant so beautifully! All the pine trees branches on the wall were real and the smell was soooo good. The vibes were great. There was a lot of people but not too crowded where you'll be needing to push and shove to get around. Plenty of tables to sit at and easy to talk/ listen. The drinks we ordered were made beautifully and tasted great. A little bit on the stronger side but just how I liked it. Definitely would come back again!! Although since it is East 6th I'm not sure how the parking situation is. Definitely on an extra busy night out in this area, street parking is hard to find."
"4.5 StarsWe came here for happy hour on a Tuesday. The establishment boasts an inviting atmosphere with plentiful indoor and outdoor seating, featuring a beautifully designed patio and tasteful adorable interior. The menu is "Asian fusion with a Southern Twist" - love the creativity. Our culinary journey began with a refreshing margarita and appetizers: charred Brussels sprouts ($9), Cheese Corn ($9), and Banh Mih pork belly tacos ($4.50 each during HH). The happy hour menu offered impressive prices, and the real star was the pork belly taco - a decadent, succulent generously sized creation that easily deserved five stars by itself. The Cheese Corn is super heavy and buttery. i definitely food coma'd after that lol. But I could not stop eating it!The Brussels sprouts were a delightful side- lightly crispy and glazed with a sweet, oily finish. However, the Bulgogi-style steak special ($23 on Tuesdays) was a significant disappointment. Tough, flavorless, and nearly inedible, it seemed like an unfortunate outlier in an otherwise exceptional meal. What truly elevated the experience was the staff's exceptional service. Our waitress, Lina, was particularly attentive and sweet, embodying the establishment's welcoming spirit.Despite the steak's shortcomings, the overall experience was memorable. The combination of delicious food, creative menu, great happy hour prices, cute vibes, and outstanding service makes this a venue I would enthusiastically recommend - with the caveat to perhaps skip the steak special."
"Amazing family-based and friendly service. Has an issue with their online ordering system (Powered by Menufy which was a horrible experience, especially after a made us wait for 1 hour and still no delivery) and we eventually had to go pick it up... they covered the meal out of respect for our time as it was 1.5 hours since we ordered. Their food is also delicious, highly recommend the Saigon curry noodles! Thank y'all for being a people-centered business!"
"I love Jack Allen's Kitchen for date night! My husband and I go to Jack Allen's Kitchen frequently for their nice selection of fresh foods and succulent drinks that are reasonably priced. Occasionally we will pick up food to go. Jack Allen's Kitchen on Anderson Lane has a roadhouse vibe with Texan undertones. Our dining experience has always been great - food quality is consistently notable and service top-notch.Reservations are recommended but not required. The downside of not making reservations is sometimes you must wait for a table to open. During the week this is not an issue. However, on the weekends it gets quite busy. A hostess greets you as you walk in, and information is taken for you to wait in the dining queue, or you are shown immediately to your table. Standard fare includes a complimentary sample size pimento spread with crackers. We are creatures of habit and usually order salmon or trout entrees, occasionally we deviate off the main path. We also love their guacamole and catfish appetizers. It's truly amazing how fast your menu items are prepared. Important to note, Jack Allen's Kitchen has happy hour Mon-Fri 3:30-6:30 pm with half-priced appetizers and $1 off cocktails. Amazing deal!!!Today was a rare "to-go" order day for a working Board meeting. I selected salmon with Dijon and horseradish glaze, pan seared potato cake, herb roasted veggies, white wine lemon butter sauce, and toasted paprika glaze. So delicious! We have celebrated birthdays, career milestones and many date nights. Jack Allen's Kitchen has ample free parking. Recommend Jack Allen's Kitchen for your dining pleasure!"
"We dined at Olamaie for our anniversary and had a great dinner. We were greeted with an anniversary card and small complementary drinks. The space is small and I enjoyed the intimate dining room. Our waitress was working her first night there but it didn't show, she gave great suggestions and provided good service. While we were mid-meal there, they were officially awarded a Michelin star, which was a cool experience. I expected more celebration but the staff played it cool. We ordered three apps, the biscuits, and two entrees which was probably one app too many. My favorite were the fish dip appetizer and the catfish entree. The rabbit was great but a bit salty for me. Overall I thought the food was good and different but not quite in my top meals in this city. The cocktails were good as well, the Fringe Contender was a stand out."
"Great casual breakfast place. We didn't have to wait for a table. The food was really good but the pancake flight was too die for. Our waitress Amie was awesome too."
"Every once in awhile you go to a place hoping it stands up to all the positive reviews. Cruzteca not only met the standard but in many ways was WAAAAY more than what I expected. Everything was so much more than we could have hoped for.. Service from Tony onwards was gracious, friendly and energetic, the cocktails well made and boy oh boy the food. Friends ordered the Ceviche, me the Chips and Salsa.. I want to go back just for the Mexican martini, chips and salsa. It's a tray of perfectly crisp yellow corn chip, a fresh tomato salsa, a salsa arbol and a salsa verde. Note: The Arbol packs some heat. I had one of the best vegetarian enchilada plates I have ever had. The veggies still had a nice texture, the beans and rice were not just support actors but perfect partners to the tangy verde sauce enchiladas. Was torn to write this review as this is a 1st come 1st served kinda place and as the pic shows, every table is taken. They have started tequila dinners, look forward to attending one soon."
"This is the place for some delicious tacos! Props to James - our server - who made some awesome recommendations including a spicy margarita. So good!Casual environment. Bar seating - indoor seating - and patio options. Cute neighborhood vibe. I can't wait to go back."
"Service is hit or miss but the food is worth it! Love love love this placeGreat vibesGreat drink selectionSaki and cocktails are greatAnd the vegetarian sushi is the best I've ever hadHUGE selection for vegetarians and vegans and meat eaters Something for everyoneSome of my favorites: lettuce wraps, house salad, miso soup, edamame, cowgirl, Eden roll, green goddess, shiitake it to me, prince roll, Thai hippie and unami express A MUST go if you are in the domain"

Food was delicious. The fried cauliflower was BOMB. The salmon dish was so flavorful. Blood orange margarita was so nice. Definitely try it. (Be careful with parking across the street. It's expensive and they WILL send you a ticket if you are there too long.

I went on a Friday night and was able to get a table right away. They had live music starting at 7 pm, but I had finished my meal by then. My date got the chicken wrap and liked it. I got the seafood enchiladas. They were good, but I likely wouldn't get it again. The only thing really seafood about it was the 2 shrimp served outside the enchiladas. I do recommend this place if you're wanting to have a date night in downtown Round Rock.

Food was 10/10!! Service was very good too. I love taking my time with dinner and trying all the courses and that is what we did! Arrived at 7:15, left 3 hours later. All of the pastas were amazing!! Focaccia was warm and fresh, the prosciutto and pear was really good. The wagyu was sooooooo good!! Cooked perfectly. I asked for medium and it came more medium rare but it was so good so I didn't mind. We wanted cake for desert and they didn't have any on the menu so the server gave us an off menu option. They do have valet parking but I found a street free spot around the corner super close. My only sort of complaint is we say in the patio and it was 30 degrees outside. It was enclosed and they had heaters but it was still a bit cold. I would still go again!

I have a hard time reviewing my absolute favorite spots, there's so much good to say and I don't ever think my reviews can do my favorite spots justice. Whisler's is an excellent cocktail bar that I frequent and never get bored of. Their revolving menu always has a story, and the chill space is cozy and welcoming, day and night. Whenever Whisler's introduces a new menu, I'm there. I've enjoyed their Jazz nights, their craw fish broils, and of course their 75 cent Martinis ('SCUSE ME?!), but mostly I just love grabbing a 5PM drink before the rush, opening my laptop outside and finishing a few e-mails under the sun. The bartenders as Whislers know what they're doing. They're pretty knowledgeable and I particularly enjoy sitting at the bar during the week when it's quite. It's cool to them create their "version" of the cocktail... I honestly sometimes find the cocktails inconsistent but actually appreciate the variations. The music is mostly chill, it gets pretty packed on the weekends, the Mezcal tasting room upstairs is an absolute must. Whislers will always be one of my favorite neighborhood bars.

So, good stuff first: food is spicy and interesting, room is lively, drinks are strong and creative. We (ultimately) had a really good dinner. But before it got good, it was pretty awful.Five of us showed up for a 7:15pm reservation and got escorted to "the private dining room." Spoiler: it's not a private dining room; it's a basement. 20-something other people were eating down there, surrounded by industrial boxes of toilet paper and paper towels. I get it: Bar Peached has gotten popular and there's a ton of demand, but if you're going to seat diners in a windowless basement, you should warn them.We gently asked if there was something upstairs in the, errrr, actual restaurant. We were told it might be a few minutes, which was totally fine. We were there for a birthday and the ambience, happy to wait.Went up to the bar, and night went from odd to embarrassing. We had just ordered a drink and settled in to wait for table, when hostess Alli launched herself our way SCREAMING. "No standing at the bar! Let's go! Get out!" The two members of our party who were sitting in bar stools were allowed to remain; the three who were standing and waiting were marched outside, downstairs, and parked next to a dumpster while we waited for table.I now understand: despite the name, Bar Peached REALLY isn't a bar and takes that incredibly seriously. They want you ordering dinner at bar, not drinks. And they very much don't want anyone standing and waiting. And... okay, I guess? But Alli yelled at us, embarrassed us, talked down to us, and just totally ruined a nice evening. It was baffling behavior -- unnecessary, unhinged, unkind. I gently said as much and the response was "I'm just doing my job." Again, okay, maybe? But wow.We were eventually marched in from the (literal) cold and seated at a terrific table. Dinner was lovely, server was great, food was inventive and delicious. But it's hard to come back from a terrible and insulting start to evening.I stepped outside and spoke to manager during dinner -- she was apologetic and understanding. Explained that the hostess in question "was on her way out." Not sure if that implies a termination or resignation, and it totally doesn't matter. Good she won't be working there anymore, bad she's still behind hostess stand insulting customers with one foot out door.Anyway.This is an adorable little restaurant with a creative menu and stellar cocktails. Secretly, we liked the apps better than the mains and the deserts even better than the apps. But all great. But we won't be back until this young, angry, odd hostess has officially departed. Life too short to get yelled at while dropping $400.

The food is good but it didn't blow me away. The chicken 2-way rice is amazing though The service is quite slow. It took them a while to bring out the food and to took the payment.

Pro Tip: Michelin 1 star. Earlier reservations feel like you have the place to yourself and it's much quieter. As expected, an exquisitely exceptional experience. There will be a service charge that it's included, and anything additional is greatly appreciated. Listen, their service is worth the additional tip. Careful attention and delivery of menu recommendations and table service. Claps to Daniel for leading the way through the menu, starting us off with two orders of the Class (you'll need one for each person) and the Cauliflower for starters, and then two entrees with a side of biscuits. I went with the Golden Fried Catfish and was not at all disappointed. Will. Get. Again. Perfectly crisped and finished with a beurre blanc sauce with caviar. Table service will include a small bottle of Tabasco to cut and balance the flavors with some acidity. And the Biscuits? Oh my. Best in town. Period. While their small biscuit shop, Lil Ola, has needed to unexpectedly close down, they do look forward to revisiting the concept. They are that good. I look forward to returning and trying some new options, including their cocktails and desserts.

"My husband and I loved the Love Boat! There was a good variety of meat and sushi and the price was excellent!"
"What a show. It's been a long while since I've been here and I had forgotten how engaging and entertaining the chefs are as they prepare the food at your table. I had the noodles and chicken and my wife had the noodles and steak. They all come with stir fried vegetables, a very mild ginger tasting broth, and white rice. Other additions or substitutes are available at extra charge.Your food is prepared for you right at your table around the large flat top grills and what a show it is. The chef engages with the diners as he shows off his knife and spatula skills which are very impressive by themselves then he adds touches of fire and flame throughout as well.If you are looking for a dining experience and a show at the same time, this is the place to go. The chicken teriyaki was very good and my wife really enjoyed the noodles and steak as well. If you have room after the pile of food the present, you can end it off with a delicious cheesecake drizzled with caramel and chocolate for desert.Of course, they also offer a selection of wines and beers."
"Diner Beware! Nightcap charges for a large rock in your drink and won't tell you ahead of time when they ask if you want one."
"We went to see a bball game and have a meal. The veggie burger was delicious and my partner's salad was fresh and large. Ambiance and service was great. The manager was very helpful in getting us settled and connected with our Lady Lunghorns game. Now all they need to do is reopen the Revelry on the Boulevard so I don't have to travel so far."
"I consider myself to be a tortilla and beef fajita connoisseur. I have gotta tell you all if you want beef fajitas this is the place to go in Austin. A bit pricey but the meat was juicy, tender and charred just right. The tortillas are what you expect to find at Pappasito's, Ninfa's and Lupe Tortillas - home made and fresh. Our server, Betty, was excellent! The other staff was great! The bathroom was clean. The restaurant was spacious and clean.I hate to say good things about this place because the wait might be long next time."
"I had the crab stuffed flounder and it was possibly the best piece of fish I've ever had in my entire life. Mashed potatoes and green beans were good too, and the portions were great.I sat at the bar, and the bartender was very nice and attentive. He does need to lean his whiskeys tho.Would come back here for seafood any time."
"The decor was so pretty and spacious! We went on a Sunday morning and it wasn't busy at all. They also have a kid play area near the outdoor dining. There was only one waitress, but she was really helpful and attentive. She was really knowledgeable about the menu items and answered all our questions. The food did not disappoint. The chips and salsa was so good. We even asked for extra salsa. The little cup of Caldo Simar was also good. It was just a broth. For the starter we order the shrimp ceviche called Ceviche Azteca. It was very spicy even with the side of fried tortillas and crackers. Ceviche Azteca ($18) includes: shrimp, lime, soy sauce, sesame seeds, pico de gallo, and cucumberWe also ordered the Tacos Nayarit ($17). This included three fried or grilled tilapia fish tacos with cheese, topped with pickles onions, carrots, and red cabbage. It also comes with a scoop of rice and beans. The food was delicious and fresh."
"This is a must if your on Lake Austin! Driving up and docking your boat is a fun experience and the staff was super helpful. We pulled up after a day on the water and this food hit the spot! I ordered the Scooter and it was the prefect mix of dinner food with out being too greasy. The staff also offered up new sauces for the fries and onion rings we ordered. We all left the table happily satisfied. The rive is a great backdrop while you eat. It is prefect for a picture to capture a wonderful day on the water."
"My boyfriend was in the mood for something different so I recommended we go to Mudbugs. We began our meal with the Calamari, which was a fantastic start. The calamari was perfectly crispy on the outside while tender on the inside, with just the right amount of seasoning. It was served with a zesty and flavorful creole remoulade. My boyfriend opted for the Soulful Seafood Jam, and it was an absolute hit. The salmon was cooked to perfection. The seafood jambalaya had a spice level that was just right, and the creole mustard Beurre blanc sauce added a rich, tangy finish that brought the whole dish together.I chose the Chicken Fried Steak Friday special, which you cannot find on the menu. The chicken was perfectly breaded and fried, and was served with mashed potatoes. The gravy was the cherry on top, adding a savory richness that made each bite comforting and satisfying. We also tried the Smoldering Longbranch and Embrace the Buzz cocktails. Embrace the Buzz was good but I highly recommend the Smoldering Longbranch. The service was a little slow for lunch on a Friday but the staff are very friendly and make some fantastic suggestions."
"I got the medium beef brisket wrapped burro with black beans and a side of guacamole. It was filling and delicious as the meat was tender and not too chewy. For my drink, I had the michelada with Dos XX as my beer of choice. It was okay as it tasted fairly watered down, so I probably would recommend another drink choice unless you are a big fan of micheladas. The service was great with our server being very patient and taking her time to answer all our questions regarding the menu. The food did take some time to get out to us but we did have a party of 5 and the restaurant was fairly busy. The establishment had a lot of televisions where we were seated and overall was decorated very nicely. There are various seating options available to accommodate various party sizes, which was nice."
"Super cute spot in the middle of the city! Great mixologist that offered recommendations for happy hour. Outdoor space was welcoming and the corn hole made the n"afternoon. No food service but the food trucks were next door and they let you bring the food into nosh! Please do not let the place go for another condo high rise!"
"Our 4th time visiting Jardin and it was fabulous. The ambiance was perfect, felt like I was in somebody's home, waiter was very attentive on refilling our chips and salsa and he was very friendly. Perfect tejano music playing over the speakers just adding to the vibes, it's that kind of music that you hear and it makes you crave Mexican food. Perfection. The chips were freshly fried and crisp and the salsa was just perfect, a little sweet, a little spicy, just right to keep you coming back for more. The tostada con queso, and fajita nachos were just classic and the fajita beef, enchilada, taco and beans and rice, just what the doctor ordered. There is no way I wouldn't give this place a 5 star review and come back every single time I am in the area, regardless of what other restaurants are in the area. A+ all around guys! Great work!!! Keep it up, I know you will!"
"This restaurant is boring. It's a chain. I only went because I was at a meeting. Someone else picked it because she likes the MALL, and she paid. We were in a weird back room with two tvs and a long table. The food was boring - mediocre "Italian American." The good news is that my gluten free friend could find enough to eat. The staff was fine. It was clean. If you must go, it's fine. It could be in any town in America. Meh."
"I ordered Dovetail for pickup and had a great experience! It was ready in about 15 minutes and they followed all of our modifications to a tee. Food: I love a classic pepperoni and theirs is great. I suggest getting it double cut, otherwise the pieces are quite large. The ricotta ranch is a must, it's clearly homemade and fresh each day.Ambience: I've only picked up, but the place is super cute! It looks like a great spot for date night."
"Do NOT order the Diablo unlessYou have a mouth of steel. My own fault for not reading for details. I think it was the habaneros. I was drawn in my the chipotle sauce. But something did me in OMG. The pain! Thank goodness it was takeout! The pain was not pretty. Update: I survived. Took it apart and scraped off the orange habaneros."
"Great ambience, great food, decent service, but pricey. Fortunately, there's plenty of parking."
"One of my absolute fave gems of ATX. Food is incredible and so is the low key backyard atmosphere. I never go and not get the Yucca fries. Breakfast Tacos are delish. Try the Temperizo for a meatless option, super tasty with a kick. They seriously have the best sauces and dips, all house made and fresh. The staff behind the counter is always kind and helpful with recs! I Was too hungry forgot to take pics!"
"Food was soo good. Drink strong and so good I got tipsy fast. We had group together, the guy was friendly, explained about menu. Brought us appetizers. Nacho and guamcole and chesse melt good!!"
"What is it about a perfectly hot coffee and why is it so hard to find? I first reviewed Stinson's 8 years ago. Austin has changed a lot. We are covered in coffee shops now. But this place is still great. The joy is in the details. Here they are:The avocado toast uses real avocados, not the prepared mush that I've been getting at some of my other haunts-- and they have perfectly fried eggs. The salsa is freshly made and truly hot. They are very dog friendly-- water bowls are on the patio.Wifi is strong--man is that important. I've been working remotely in coffee shops since 2010. Bad wifi can wreck an hour of work if you have to leave and find another place. But it's always been strong here.In winter, when other coffee places are cold, relying on the people to make it warm, I always bring a coat. But Stinson's is so cozy. The windows capture the heat of the sun. In the summer, the windows open all the way to the ceiling, and the place is literally cool. Architects are clever like that when you hire the right ones. Stinson's must have.In the evening, if it's open, Stinson's is like a different place. The coffee cocktails give everything a fun, edgy buzz. When coffee cocktails first became fashionable around Austin, I remember Stinson's being one of the first to offer them. Unfortunately, it's usually not open late, and right now, they don't seem to have any evening programming. In fact, the hours on the website are wrong. I've come in at 4pm recently to find them closing. But businesses do what they can right now.The staff is friendly and very conscientious. Food is brought hot, right away. I can't say that for a lot of places I loved before the pandemic. The parking situation is definitely one to plan for. It's so much easier if you enter from 45th street than if you enter from Burnet Rd. But it's not worse than the parking in 75% of Austin now. And, as mentioned before, something about the temperature of the coffee tells you that everything is made with the goal of being exactly right."
"I got the Nashville hot sliders with spicy fries. It's not always available but they can make it (usually). It was great! The right amount of spicy and a great crunch! The fries were fantastic and cooked perfectly. One critique is that they should use more meat for the price. Service was stupendous. And the atmosphere is definitely easy-going. I will return."
"Made a reservation for 4:30 PM on Valentine's Day. Valet parking was easy to do. You can pay and tip through many different apps. The restaurant is easy to find get inside and friendly customer service right away with a smile. I got my table and it was a patio with heaters. Very nice to feel. The service was great easy to understand and ask questions vegetarian menu was given to me I was able to pick out the choices that I can make into vegans choices so did a lot of modifications, but I got the food choices and I was very happy with them all .it was very busy and each presentation I took a picture of and I was happy with most every single thing that I have had .now the wait time was very long for some things to the point where I cut off two of my menu choices because I was going to be late for my second appointment that night. I was finished dinner at seven and I couldn't push any longer because I had appointment at 7:30 to be at so I had to cancel two of my food choices sadly. I feel the customer service could've been a little bit more upbeat and a little bit more efficient because I did see my waiter talking to another customer just about life for more than two minutes where there was an five tables before dad had asked him for help, including me. The tables were very nice and clean. The only thing I had the problem with my table was the leg was shaking, so the table kept shaking, even though they fixed it for a little bit the table kept shaking. I feel that at some point of time there was over 10 minute wait for each item and it became at some .20 minute weight and it was just nice to be able to ask questions about the menu and get details and I tried something new that was called hot rock, which was a mushroom and you had to almost cook it on like a hot burner yourself, which was a wonderful experience each, and every choice that I made a food menu was very special and unique to me because I was able to make it Vegan and that says a lot because the menu was not vegan at all. I hope to go back and make another reservation and try all my food choices again and also change a few things around now that I have learned from the first time."
"If you are a Yelper, and you take the history of Austin food seriously, This is your Museum of the History of Austin Tex-Mex cuisine. This is a restaurant dedicated to documenting and re-creating the great signature dishes of the most important Tejano cooks who did their work in Austin. There are other restaurants in the world which re-create traditional dishes. But almost none have the commitment to identifying the historic cook and crediting them with their individual innovations and masterpieces. A "runner up" on historical commitment would be Rules in London, an upscale establishment which itself dates back to 1798. Rules goes out of its way to preserve the great dishes of Victorian cooking - even to the point of maintaining a game farm to obtain fowls and roasts that would be otherwise unavailable on a modern table. Unlike DK Maria, Rules draws its history from its own ancient recipes.DK Maria follows the Austin Mexican community as a whole.Another difference: Rules will "cheat" a bit to reflect modern tastes. That is less of an issue with DK Maria - because only a subset of the dishes are historical legacy dishes. (These are clearly identified on the menu.)Most of the dishes are the cook's own take on the basic repertoire of Tex-Mex cuisine. The cook's personal interpretation dishes are in most cases outstanding.* * *DK Maria's has the best Queso Fundido I have had anywhere on the planet. This is an easy competition to win. Most Queso Fundido is awful. What you typically get is a hot platter with a cheese blob on top with the consistency of half-chewed bubble gum.The cheese does not want to separate itself from itself Making eating the dish almost as much of a pain in the a** as eating crab. The cheese itself does not typically taste like much. (We ain't talking baked Gorgonzola here.)So the dish depends on the ingredients mixed in with the cheese. In most cases, the mix-ins are nothing special ... Making Queso Fundido the world's most inconvenient way to eat plain old onions.* * *DK Maria's El Flamedo is of another order of magnitude entirely. It is crammed with grilled vegetables. The grilled vegetables are bursting with flavor. I am guessing the vegetables are bursting with flavor because DK Maria's has a very very good vegetable vendor. These are much better mushrooms and peppers than one usually gets in an Austin restaurant. The flaming is precisely enough timed to give a lovely charred taste to the vegetables without blasting the life out of them. It is not easy to get the timing right on a dish like this.Too little time under the flame and you get no char.Too much time under the flame and your vegetables are casualties. So what you are getting is kitchen skill at work.Add to this a fine fine chorizo at the bottom of the cheese and you have great eating.* * *I am not convinced that every single solitary dish that comes out of the kitchen will be legendary. The chips and salsa at the beginning had wonderful puffy chips and an utterly indifferent salsa. How can a "Museum of Great Texmex Cuisine" have a mediocre salsa?Didn't any of the great cooks have an extraordinary salsa recipe? But everything else about this place is outstanding.Plus - reading the menu is as entertaining as eating the food. You can learn a ton of history from that menu. Some of the claims in that history are a little eyebrow raising.(Did DK Maria's ancestors REALLY cook for the armies on both sides of the Battle of the Alamo? I need to have that one explained to me.)Overall, however, this place is fascinating.Worth many visits to explore what they have to offer - even if a handful of the visits come up with duds."
"Absolutely loved it. Went with a large group, enjoyed Austin vibe, parked in a parking lot for deep eddy's pool. I could see it being an issue during summer when people are at the pool. Started with guac and pimento cheese appetizers, both delicious! Everyone had burgers, they were fantastic. Drinks were fabulous, especially frozen Hurricane. Great vibes, great atmosphere, staff were attentive, friendly and very helpful. Will be back for sure."
