Winchell's Donut House

I actually really love the donuts here, and I hate that I can't give five stars as I'm even constantly recommending Winchell's to everyone. I fully understand that everyone has off days, and because of that I have attempted to give them five more shots. Issue #1 -- the guy behind the counter is pushy and has his mind made up as to what I'm going to order before I order it. I asked for half a dozen and he had six in a dozen box before I even told him a second donut flavor. I do believe that part of that is the language barrier, but if I've only told him one donut flavor there shouldn't be more than that one kind in there. Issue #2 -- I love fritters and bear claws, but their fritters are horribly drenched in oil, and their bear claws are 25-50% raw every single time. Issue #3 -- the past six times that I've been in there the variety has been nonexistent. If this was a regular donut shop that was not 24 hours a day I would understand it 100%. But since it is open 24 hours a day, they need to stop with the excuses that the other varieties sell out too quickly and just start making more of those varieties. Seems like a pretty easily understood concept, especially from the business end of things. It's all about supply and demand and the varieties should be balanced out to maximize sales and decrease loss. I've left without purchasing any donuts the last six times and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I'm not certain if the ownership has changed, but currently -- this isn't it. I'd be ecstatic to be able to come back on here and give them five stars. But it's going to take some effort on their part.

10/13/23- This is the first place where the 3 star score is because I'm really torn on how to rate them. This is because our food experience was so opposite ends of the spectrum. The sandwiches were horrible (totally 1 star food level). Not only were they basically made out of lunch meat, there was very little on them, and they were soggy. The donuts on the other hand were great. Like the cherry fritter I had was one of the best pastries I've ever had. I will say in some of my posts that your experience is based off what you order, and here it is totally true. Don't waste your time with any of the food here except the donuts.

If you want a great spot for donuts, well, this is it! Love these donuts, definitely always fresh and never lacking the fillings inside.

My mom and I stopped here for a quick pick me up before work wanting bear claws and donut holes.I didn't see donut holes on display but the person helping us went to the back and brought back quickly a clear bag with the donut holes inside wrapped with ribbon. It kind of grossed me out to see that they were just in the back in a foggy/smeared bag from all the time sitting but we figured it must be smeared from the glaze.I ordered an orange juice and they handed me a Tropicana bottle ( not a problem! ) I wasn't expecting that though. Looking closer I realized the orange juice had a green color to it, so I decided to let them know we wouldn't be taking it. At that point someone else who I assume was the manager took the bottle, did a double take, then set it aside to throw it out I assume. We left with the bear claws and donut holes and immediately felt sick just a few bites in. We thought maybe it was too much sugar so early in the morning but we've had donuts from other places before and felt fine. We went to work and throughout our day felt sick to our stomachs. We're pretty sure it was the donut holes and bear claws but not sure if they were old or if they just sat wrong with us. I wouldn't come back only because the donuts themselves seemed to make us sick both times we've come here. Despite that, we had good service and the staff was very friendly so early in the morning.

I had high expectations coming here this morning but holy crap was I let down, the girl working the register and the older man were sweet and polite but the breakfast burrito tastes like it was marinated in only tapatio was supposed to be a chicken burrito with eggs but it's literally only potatoes and tapatio, the churro doughnut was pretty underwhelming and the cappuccino is literally the powdered 7 11 garbage..... I understand saving money to make a business profitable but the poor quality of the food paired with the lack of knowing how to prepare a burrito and gas station quality coffee leaves an incredible amount to be desired. To be completely honest don't eat here it's just not good food and the coffee is a joke...

The doughnut craving hit again, this time Winchell's was the choice. I'll start off by saying, next time we want doughnuts THIS will be the move. The doughnuts were delicious, you could tell they were very well made and at a very decent price for what we got. The chocolate glazed had a nice crunch to it that held up even when we went back to the box for an afternoon nibble. Don't let the front fool you, it's a choice spot for your next breakfast both on the run or to bring home for the family. We will be back again!

Oh my gosh. How do you do it? You are the donut masters. I'm sitting here eating a chocolate covered plain cake and it's perfectly light and delicate yet crisp and it's just delicious. Seriously, you have the science down!I thought I didn't like donuts, but that's because everyone else does it wrong, oh my goodness.Thank you.

I had a Groupon, so decided to give this place a try. I ordered a dozen doughnuts and gave them free rein, saying to just give me the best ones. They put 2 apple fritters, 2 glazed, 2 chocolate frosted, 3 with sprinkles, chocolate cake, and 2 plain cake donuts. None of them were anything special. I definitely wouldn't bother ordering here again.

This is my neighborhood donut shop. I have gone here for years. Despite its humble furnishings and appearance, it is a diamond. The quality of their donuts and coffee is only surpassed by the consistently high level of service and friendliness. I encourage everyone to stop in and experience it for themselves.

Best breakfast sandwiches in Aurora!! Definitely no place better and for it's price?! And the staff is so friendly and nice, gives a welcoming vibe every time you come in. Can't go wrong 12/10 recommended!!
