It seemed like a great day for a Chili Cheese Dog, so I came to Grapevine's Portillo's. Upon entering you quickly realize if you have seen one Portillo's, you have seen them all. The walls are adorned with old gas station and automotive service signs, giving the places a vintage ambiance. The only main difference between locations is a local wall saying what town you are in.The food is pretty much the same as well. Today I ordered a Chili Cheese Dog, Fries with Cheese Sauce, a Sprite, and a Alice of Chocolate Cake. The Fries and Cheese Sauce rocked! The cake was real cold too. The Chili Cheese Dog was a bit disappointing. The hot dog encasement was a little tough and I am a texture kind of guy, so that pretty much set the tone for my experience.

First visit to the actual restaurant, went to the food truck before they open their first location here in DFW. Was not impressed from the food truck, however, was quite happy with the experience here at the Grapevine restaurant! We went at 12:45 on a cold Monday... surprisingly, they were very busy! The line moved quickly and our order came quickly, too!We were both pleased with our "dogs" and the onion rings were also good!Large. Well lit inside. They have just one soda fountain, which kind of gets crowded when people are trying to get a soft drink.Felt like it was a good value, well run! Definitely be coming back!

If you've been to a Portillo's, you're aware of the very long lines. You're in luck with this new arrival in Grapevine. When we visited on Saturday afternoon at one PM, we were amazed to be first in line to pick up a delicious hot dog and beef sandwich. These items are legendary as is Portillo's in Chicago, which only recently expanded to the DFW area. What we remember most from this visit might surprise you. When we stopped at the pickup window, we received a heart felt "I hope you enjoy the food." His name is McKinley, not to be confused with William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States. When so many team members sound mechanical when thanking us for our business, McKinley was earnest. I don't think the manager could have said it better. Perhaps not even Mr. Portillo himself.

This was my first time at Portillo's! My husband and I ordered through the drive thru. We had our fur baby in the car so it was easier for us to keep her in the back seat. IYKYK! No lines in the drive thru. We must have been lucky! The staff was friendly and the service was quick. While waiting for our food, one member came out to deliver the soda. I thought it was nice that she asked to pet our dog rather than automatically touching her. She stayed for a few seconds then returned to work. While waiting for the food, we looked inside the kitchen. Everything looked brand new! I thought that Portillo's was open for a while or they keep it in top shape! I was very impressed.I ordered the cheeseburger meal with cheese sauce on the side and a large sprite. My husband ordered the Italian Beef sandwhich and the jumbo hot dog (Chicago Style). I thought the cheeseburger was delicious! I ate it within 6 bites! I thoroughly enjoyed the burger -very tender and juicy. The vegetables tasted fresh and I loved it! My husband also enjoyed his order. He couldn't believed the taste of the hot dog. He also enjoyed his meal. TYSM! We'll be back soon!

They just opened and had been highly anticipated so I wanted to see what the fuss was about. To my surprise the drive-through did not have too long of a line; I have seen other Portillo's in the area that were positively a madhouse. Drive through staff were very polite and welcoming. When I ordered fries, they asked if I wanted a side of cheese sauce. While I did want this, I noticed another review mentioned that no mention is made of the cost of these upsells and the same happened to me. No big deal as I wanted cheese anyway, but good feedback that if you are going to upsell you need to be clear there is an extra charge. Props to them for having Coke instead of Pepsi.I usually like my hot dogs plain with mustard, but got this one fully loaded so I could get the real Chicago experience. I gave it the old college try but I don't think I'm a fan of all the add-ons. That's OK, I can always return and order it plain or get the beef sandwich or something else. Unfortunately my bun was pretty soggy from the relish, but I give them the benefit of the doubt since I did not eat on site but drove home with the food which took about 10 minutes. I know these are prepared to order so probably if it was eaten right away that would not be an issue.French fries are the typical frozen crinkle cut fries which I usually don't think much of, but these were fresh and hot with plenty of salt. Cheese sauce was fire. Overall I would return. I'm interested to try the Italian beef. And we'll go inside and eat and see what the ambiance is like. Service was very good and not nearly the crowd I was expecting.

Three stars because I really like the fries and cheese sauce and it reminds me of living in Chicago. However - what on earth is going on with the alarmingly green relish? It's turning the bun a green/blue color. Very unappetizing.

Showing up at 10:03am the doors were locked--they were supposed to open at 10am. Ambiance for a fast-foodish type restaurant was really nice.Ordering process felt like I was at a rental car counter. Don't expect the default product to look anything like their photos without agreeing to the many "upsell" questions that lengthened the ordering process: - "Do you want to upgrade to the BIG BEEF?" - "Do you want peppers?" - "Do you want cheese sauce?" - "Would you like the large combo?"None of which they explicitly state will be at any extra charge. Assuming there would already be peppers in the beef (as in the photos), I turned down the request for what I thought would be extra (or maybe hot in addition to sweet?) peppers.I accepted the cheese which I immediately saw on the register screen was 99-cents extra. The peppers, depending on what option you choose will be anywhere from 75-cents to $1.50. And while they make it look like a "combo" on the menu board, checking the receipt and website after leads me to believe there is no "combo" discount as the prices for the fries and drink were the same as if ordered ala carte. Also from the website I noticed various "gravy options" from DRY to EXTRA DIPPED. Curiously I was not asked my preference for these, what appear to be, "no charge" options.Ordered "dine in" as indicated on receipt. Food comes in a bag which means tearing open the bag and/or wrappers to cover the (hopefully clean?) table. Also equally as awkward for taking all the torn up papers and napkins to the trash with no tray to carry them on--I ended up dropping a few things!Make sure to get your napkins while filling your drinks. There are no napkins at the table or provided in your bag. Guess I'm glad I wasn't provided the option for extra gravy since it was already messy enough!$15 for a small "plain beef on bun w/cheese" non-combo combo seems a bit excessive for what I just consumed. Maybe the hot / sweet peppers, recommended on their website, along with the extra gravy I was never offered might have made my experience better if not just closer to $20!Odds are I'll never find out. Disclaimer: Since I felt bad that the first Yelp review for this newly opened location was a "3-star", I looked at all the other DFW locations before posting. They all averaged 3+ stars; I saw none at 4+

LOCATIONPortillo's is a relative newcomer to GV - developed as part of a concentration of restaurants in the old Payton-Wright Ford space on the north side of SH 114. Neighboring spots include Firebird's, Velvet Taco, Son of a Butcher, and others. Portillo's/GV is one of many outlets of the Chicago chain.ENVIRONMENT - 2 out of 5You can order either via digital kiosk or at the counter (there's also drive-thru). Inside, the decor seems very familiar - think TGI Friday's but with a gas station theme. You'll see "old" gas station signs, an STP banner, etc. But it all seems too familiar and has been done many, many times in other restaurants. (Almost like a highly-themed casino hotel restaurant.) Portillo's comes complete with classic rock from the 1950's and 1960's.Seating is a combination of booths and 2 and 4-top tables, with outdoor seating. Booth seats are unfortunately very hard - you won't want to sit around for longer than you need to. (Maybe that's the point?)FOOD - 3 out of 5Portillo's bring Italian beef and hot dogs to DFW. I **guess** these are supposed to be authentic, but from my recollection of eating in Chicago, the menu is a little on the safe side. I got an Italian sausage sandwich with sweet peppers, along with a small side of onion rings and a large drink. (Hint: get the small drink since you can refill at the drink counter.)The sausage was a bit on the dry side, but the sweet peppers helped make it more flavorful. The rings were pretty good - not as greasy as rings tend to be. But make sure to grab 5 to 6 napkins at the drink counter - you'll need them.Even though my order was for dine-in, it was delivered in a bag, not a tray. That seems sloppy, unless **all** dine-in orders come this way.OVERALL - 3 out of 5Portillo's is a departure from the typical burger & fries or Tex-Mex choices that dominate DFW. My impression was the the food was average - neither bad nor memorable. The interior is familiar to the point of comical - and the music caters to diners in their 70's and older. (Maybe some music from the 1970's and 1980's to make it "newer"?)I know there are a lot of folks that love Portillo's and that's fine. My first impression was that once the uniqueness wears off, that the chain will have to work harder to keep customers coming back. Fast casual/QSR is a cut-throat market, especially here in DFW. Grapevine is littered with the remains of once popular concepts - CPK, Red Robin, Carabba's, Hoffbrau, and more. Portillo's needs to up their game to stay on top.
