Hickory Roots BBQ

We really wanted to like this place. We pulled up and it looked closed. Open sign off and no sign out front. We hesitantly went inside and it looked just as closed on the inside. It was dark, dinghy and dirty. There were bugs on the floor and the place just seemed ran down. They close the salad bar at 2 so they were wrapping that all up. We actually asked if they were closing because it just didn't even seem like they were even open. The whole experience was just weird. We didn't even end up ordering food it was so awkward. Honestly if you can't clean your restaurant then I don't think you clean your kitchen. We just didn't feel comfortable eating there.

I personally feel like the deliciousness of the coleslaw tells me everything I need to know about the rest of their food. Thankfully this place has delicious coleslaw. And potato salad. And fried okra. I didn't eat the Mac and cheese but my family said it was okay. We got a big box of brisket and a box of pulled pork. Everything was really good! And the meat lasted my family five days! The portions were very generous!!! And they gave us a big cup of bbq sauce which was one of the tastiest I've ever had. The bread they gave to us was nice and toasted and much better than the bread I've had at other places. I didn't go in to pick up my food but the girl on the phone when we ordered was really sweet and helpful. Will definitely be coming back here next time we want bbq.

When we looked at the reviews for hours of operation, it said they were open. Turns out they had a sign on the door closed Mondays. Update your information.

Should have known when we drove up and there wasn't a car in the parking lot. The place is dark and dirty. The food was just okay. They don't serve many of the sides that are listed on their menu. The chopped brisket sandwich had a lot of fat and the sides were cold. The young lady that took our order was very nice. Won't be visiting again.

This is some Really Good Bbq, Customer Service is always Top Tier. Why they don't have more business is Crazy.

Best bbq since we moved to Texas!!! Sides were excellent too. Salad bar nice also. And service was outstanding!

Reasonably priced with good flavor. Looks like sole proprietorship business. Keep at it, way better than chain restaurants.

Amazing Barbecue, super friendly staff/owner. Fall off the bone ribs. Great blues playing on the sound system. What's not to love?!

ambiance - place is very dark, musty, and we saw at least 5 dead crickets insideservice - the young man taking our order barely spoke to us. we've never been here before and could have used help understanding how many sides we needed to pick etc. when he did speak he mumbled and therefore could not be understood.food - I've had bbq in many places, St. Louis, Georgia, florida, sc, nc, tn, ky, and now tx. this was very mediocre. there is only one kind of sauce here, a sweet one like sweet baby rays. there is no flavor or bark on the meat whatsoever. A pork sandwich by itself is close to $10 and the green beans are flavorless from a can. Two meals were $35 and we could not even eat our sides. Most of their fountain drinks were out of order so even that was a let down. Best in Terrell, probably because there is hardly anything here!
