As I write this, my mouth has that good, nostalgic little burn that is like a good campfire on a starry night. A warm hug that squeezes you and left you smiling. My mom is Mexican, so I was blessed to grow up with real Mexican food growing up in Dallas. She worked at many high end restaurants, country clubs, hotels, even under Dean Fearing. She judges most restaurants. She will love this one. (I will post an update tomorrow.)The menu is one page (always a good sign.) & the food is superb. Average prices. Massive servings. Plus Carla. An amazing bartender and sometimes cook who knows more about tequila than anyone I have ever met. She taught me the difference between pure tequila and tequila with additives. You would be so surprised and enlightened to understand the difference. She ruined all other tequilas for me because I finally understood and learned the value and sanctity of well distilled tequila.I hesitate to make this post. I don't want a long wait to enjoy this place, but they are so underrated. Genuine, authentic, FLAWLESS MEXICAN FOOD.

The atmosphere and food was amazing! The staff was quick and friendly. The entire place was packed the entire time as well. Only issue is the "specials" board says half off wine but does not specify it is the bottle and not just by the glass. Not the end of the world and the staff apologized, but clarity in the advertisement is necessary. We will still definitely be back!I recommend the Guac, Enchiladas Verdes, and Guiso!

This is a GEM of a restuarant. Several things make it that way. The food is sublime and the flavors rich and complex....I am sure the tacos are good but honestly get one of these specials - I got Guiso a La Veracruz Guajillo Stew - very good and verde enchiladas . even the Guacamole was excellent. I would have like to have fresh tortillas but you know that is another thing.the service and the family that runs the place are super nice and friendly. Our server Antono was great and dished out recommendations that were 100% accurate.one other thing makes it very nice is the free secured parking in a very busy neighborhood

Overpriced for what you get The tacos were tasty but very small. The toppings were fresh but I left still feeling hungry. Not a bad experience just not worth the price

This is my first time visiting this place, and I can't believe I missed it before. It's a lovely spot with a great patio that feels very relaxing and inviting. I came for brunch, and I must say the food was delicious. The tacos were excellent, and the salsa was delightful. The service was outstanding, and the staff were friendly and welcoming, like family. If you're coming with a large group, I recommend making reservations. They are open from Tuesday to Saturday. If you're in the area, be sure to give them a try!

I went to Cuates for lunch today, and I just have to say, I do not understand how this place has an almost five star rating. I think it is solidly three point five to four stars and no more. I ordered the fish taco, chicken taco, and rice and beans on the side. The chicken was flavorful and very juicy but besides that, no really unique flavor or toppings that stood out. The fish taco was also super boring and just a fried fillet with no seasoning and also you have to pay extra for the slaw. The rice was bland and the beans were standard black beans. The ambiance and service were both standard but nothing crazy. Perhaps my standards are too high as someone who lives in El Paso on the border. Over there the tortillas melt into your mouth and not because of fat but because they are just that fresh. I would come back if someone wanted to go, but otherwise pass.

One of the jewels of oak lawn! Worked on some building projects in the area and had no idea it was there. House converted to restaurant and bar with parking on street or behind the smoke shop. People so sweet and friendly. Had brunch food and it was so good Had carne asada with potatoes and an egg, tamales with an egg, tried elote appetizer and chips and salsa--all of it delicious! Can't wait to go back and try dinner menu.

I was going to take a to go order, but the moment I walked in, I loved the design and vibe of the little restaurant, the selection of music and how I was greeted when walking in made me decided to dine in. I had three tacos and they were good. Overall, the service and vibe made me feel like I was on a mini vacation.
