3.5-4 starsI have passed by Java Cafe countless times over the past few decades but never tried it until this past week. They are located across the street from Boomers Parks (previously Speed Zone, and pre-previously Showboat). Java Cafe always felt so ambiguous to me and I never would have thought it was Taiwanese food until a friend mentioned it to me. We have heard great things about the dishes from many Taiwanese friends. I grabbed a physical paper menu earlier this week, and after looking through the entire menu, we decided on 2 entrees to try first. I phoned in an order and it was ready within 15 minutes!Lunch MenuComplimentary stewed peanuts appetizerChicken w/ Sesame Oil & Soy Sauce (Three Cup Basil Chicken) $15.95Shredded Pork w/ Dry Bean Curd $15.95Front the outside, I seriously thought that the restaurant was bigger than it looked. It is quite small, and a bit cramped on the inside. There are only a few tables, including a "party" room that is a bit separated off. The biggest pet peeve were the containers were a bit shallow and both the entrees had sauces (the chicken more than the shredded pork), which actually spilled all over the bag, and into my car as well. Without the sauce, the Basil Chicken was quite dry and this dish is all about the sauce, especially over the rice. Sadness. In the past, when we ordered Basil Chicken from other restaurants, they were in tubs with lids so the sauce would not spill out. There were also lots of bits and pieces of chicken bone everywhere so eat with caution. As this was the lunch menu, both dishes came with 2 "bowls" of rice as well, which is convenient for on the go lunch. The Shredded Pork w/ Dry Bean Curd was a bit on the dry side. There were lots of dry bean curd than shredded pork, thus the reason why it was more on the dry side.Make note that they are closed every day from 2:30-5 pm for an afternoon break.Overall, flavors are good. Prices are a bit high for what it is, but there are not that many Taiwanese 小吃 places around here anymore, so hope that they continue to thrive. Parking lot is a bit small as well, so one may need to park a bit further if the plaza is busy.

Java Cafe Taiwanese Cuisine is located in Rowland Heights (directly across from Boomers Los Angeles). The restaurant has been around for at least 15+ years and I stopped by this cafe for a quick lunch in recent months.[Parking]: Has a free private parking lot and I had no issue finding a spot to park.[Service]: Subpar service, but there were complimentary peanut appetizer and hot tea.[Menu]: The restaurant advertises their Taiwanese hot stir-fry dishes as their speciality and this places also sells special Lunar New Year dishes every year, but some of hot stir-fry dishes are seasonal. Some of more unique and highlighted stir-fry dishes include #27 Gracilaria aka Dragon Whiskers (龍鬚菜 - seasonal), #3 Water Bamboo Shoot (aka Wild Bamboo Shoot) with Shredded Pork (筊白筍炒肉絲 - seasonal), #1 Cilantro Root with Beef (香根牛肉), #7 Deep Fried Salt and pepper Oyster (蚵仔酥), #5 Taiwanese Salted Pork (台灣鹹豬肉) / #6 Stir Fried Tender Garlic w/ Salted Pork (蒜苗鹹豬肉), #18 Stewed Chinese Cabbage (白菜滷), etc. I was pretty overwhelmed with their selection of Taiwanese hot stir-fry dishes and I ended up with Yelp's highlighted dishes - beef noodle soup and stinky tofu. Please note that they also sell this special clear broth beef noodle soup for $49 (as of August 2024) in limited quantity.***#3 House Special Beef Noodle Soup ($14.95): It was basically the classic braised beef noodle soup. Everything was generally good from broth, noodle, and beef. However it was my 1st time having a beef noodle soup with ginger slices instead of Chinese cabbage. That left much to be desired.#2 Deep Fried Pork Chop Rice Combo ($12.95: I sampled their pork chop and it was pretty solid, but side dishes like cucumber tasted pretty uninspiring.#7 Stinky Tofu ($10.95): Stingy portion on Taiwanese cabbage. While stinky aroma and crispy tofu texture were on point, I was somewhat disappointed with this dish.***3-star mostly on their popular highlighted dishes via Yelp, but I am willing to give this place another try, but only for their Taiwanese hot stir-fry dishes as not many restaurants in SoCal cook some of these specialty dishes.P.S. - The only other Taiwanese restaurant that offers Gracilaria is Eat Joy Food (https://www.yelp.com/biz/eat-joy-food-rowland-hghts-3) and the restaurant received Bib Gourmand from Michelin (https://guide.michelin.com/us/en/california/rowland-heights_2880170/restaurant/eat-joy-food).

Absolutely love this restaurant! The food is incredibly delicious, delivering an authentic taste of Taiwan. Despite its small size and simple decor, the cozy ambiance adds to its charm. The staff is exceptionally friendly, providing top-notch service. A bonus is the complimentary hot tea that truly warms the heart. It's not just a meal; it's an experience filled with flavors and warmth. Free parking and easy to find parking. This place is across from Boomers.

Came here after my massage next door at new vogue- I was STARVING! I didn't have any expectations for this restaurant since i just came to eat here because I was hungry & it was convenient since it was just next door.Anyway, being Taiwanese, I'd say this Taiwanese restaurant is decent. However, I'm not a huge fan of Taiwanese food (lol). The stinky tofu was decent, I think it would have been better if the tofu was cut into smaller pieces and a bit crispier. I also ordered the 3 cup chicken & it was a little above average. The service here was quick. Waitresses were nice. Ambience is cozy. The price is very reasonable as their portion is pretty big.I personally wouldn't come back unless I am craving Taiwanese food- which is almost never. But if you love Taiwanese food you should give this place a try!

I am a regular there. My favorite dish of all time was the "五更腸旺",we all agree this dish is the best in town. I also recommend the 美極三文魚 salmon, the 3 cups chicken, the special seasonal 龍鬚菜 veggies. Parking is easy, the staff was nice. They only have 1 big table for 12, and may be 8 tables for 4 ppl. So I order togo most of the time, and I would go during lunch which is not as busy.

Food: 4/5 Classic Taiwanese cafe vibes, the food is one of the better Taiwanese lunch spots in the area. Always recommend stinky tofu if you can try it. (It smells worse than it tastes)Services: 4/5They are a small cafe restaurant run by a couple of older Asian grandparents. A little slow, a little nonchalant, but that's how you know they've been serving for years. Ambience: 3/5Like I said, small Taiwanese restaurant. Most people are genuinely there for the food

The restaurant location is ok but the venue needs some update. It felt a little bit cramped when the restaurant was full. The service was quick and we got food not long after placing our order. The food was acceptable but not great. The price was a little bit high. We have ordered four to five dishes and the bill was almost $120 ...I don't know if I will come back as there are other Taiwanese restaurant in the neighboring cities.
