Helpful waiters, fast service. Food was quite good, but fried rice lacked a bit of salt. Just personal preference. Ambiance is nice with cheerful colors and calm music.

【Background】Friday, February 14, 2025, 1:20 PMNot sure if anybody else does this, but sometimes, I like to scroll through the Yelp app before I fall asleep to see which restaurants are being recommended by my algorithm. I came across a review describing the lunch special at Hong Kong Cafe, so I decided to visit the next day.I'm assuming Hong Kong Cafe was recently rebranded from a restaurant called MJ Cafe since the website URL and the receipts still use the old name. The inside was decently packed even though it was during the tail end of lunch. (Maybe because it was a Friday and/or Valentine's Day.) There was a good amount of seating, so I was still seated immediately. The decor is fun with brightly colored walls, signs, and decorations, contrasting with the minimal white tables and light wood chairs.【Food】Menu: https://mjcafetogo.com/order/Similar to other cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes) in the San Gabriel Valley, Hong Kong Cafe boasts of a pretty large selection with the numbering for the food options almost going up to 100. And the entire backside of the menu is dedicated to all their beverages. For the lunch special menu, available from 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM, there are six entree options, and you get to choose one drink from the limited selection.Originally, I was thinking of ordering the hot and spicy beef tripe and tendon rice platter since I love tripe, but I ultimately ordered:* Minced pork and fried egg rice platter ($14.99)For this dish, you can go with either the mild or spicy option. I ordered it at a medium spice level and decided to get the grass jelly drink. My food came out after about 10 minutes. The saucy minced pork, sliced green chili peppers, and onion chunks covered the white rice. A golden sunny-side up egg laid on top of everything. I did notice that my order didn't have a sprinkling of furikake like other pictures on Yelp.Everything tasted great. The dish was savory and slightly sweet. Every so often, I'd eat a green chili pepper slice, adding some heat to the meal and making my nose run a little; good thing the lunch special came with a drink. My drink had a slightly bitter tea base while the grass jelly added a mild sweetness; it's a good option if you don't like overly saccharine beverages. The cool, refreshing drink helped calm everything down.Overall, my order had a decent amount of food. Some reviews say the lunch specials are a generous size and can be shared between two people, but if you're a big eater like me, you can definitely finish one entree by yourself. The lunch special is a decent deal if you usually order a drink with your food. However, I usually just drink water, so I would probably order à la carte next time.【Service】The service was just okay. The two employees were extremely busy, multitasking with the many takeout orders while helping dine-in customers. And only one of them spoke English, so to order my food, I had to wait for him. But the food did come out relatively fast. The workers didn't really check up on me. The lid to my drink wasn't closed all the way, so it spilled a little, and I wanted more napkins. Additionally, after finishing my food and waiting a bit for the bill, I finally went up to the counter to ask for it, so you might have to be assertive to get the check. The employees were definitely swamped since I noticed the people at the table next to me waited for maybe 25 minutes, and nobody ever took their order, so they got up and left. And one worker profusely apologized to the table behind me for the long wait.【Parking】Parking was easy since the restaurant is located in a large plaza with tons of parking spots.

Nicely decorated place. They have decorations of their name on the wall, a cute telephone booth, their cups and tablesetting were all customized. Service was decent. Better than your typical dim sum type service but wouldn't classify it as amazing service. Food: overall decentSteamed egg yolk buns: nice size, well steamed, tasty sweet inside, well worth itCongee: not bad, hard to mess up, they went heavy on the ginger which I prefer less ofBeef noodles: not bad but not enough soy sauce flavoring, texture of noodles was good and the beef not overcooked but the flavors of the noodle were lackingHK milk tea: not enough condensed milk but requested for more and problem was solvedOverall not a bad spot. Menu may not have been as diverse as other places. I was impressed by the decorations. Have had better spots but enjoyed it.Food: 3.5/5Ambiance: 5/5Service: 4/5

We've been to this Hong Kong cuisine many times and this place has the most authentic Hong Kong food. It's perfect to have my hometown comfort food on a rainy day. My friend and I ordered from the lunch special menu. (Lunch Special only $14.99 and they have 6 choices and it's served with a drink, is from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) I ordered the Hot & Spicy Beef Tripe & Tendon Rice Platter and my friend ordered BBQ Pork Fried Rice. The lunch specials come with a drink and you can choose green tea, black tea, Thai tea, Grass Jelly drink, chrysanthemum tea, lemon tea, milk tea, coffee, or HK-style coffee and milk tea mix. Both of us picked a Grass Jelly drink. The portions of the food were big. The Hot & Spicy beef tripe & tendon rice platter was flavorful but not too spicy. It had a good amount of beef tripe & tendon. The BBQ Pork fried rice was also delicious and flavorful. They now have a "Enjoy a lovely meal" challenge, when you complete one of the tasks (post a photo or write a review on social media) then you can get a free Pineapple Bun Keychain (Valued at $8.99)! The Pineapple Bun Keychain looks very cute but it's only limited to one per table.

This Hong Kong Cafe location can be found in the same large plaza as Starbucks. What makes this location different from the one in Monterey Park, is their dog friendly (covered) seating. My mother, my husband, our little girl dog and I decided to have lunch here last Sunday. We parked and walked over to the restaurant around 12:18 pm. There was plenty of seating available both inside and out. My mom informed one of the servers that we would like to sit outside, in which one server brought out menus for us right away. After looking it over, we ended up ordering:#93 Congee w/ Fresh Chicken, $9.50 prior to tax- Portion size, this is good for 3 people and probably even 4. I thought this was okay. I probably would have ordered a different protein for added flavor but the congee itself was cooked right and wasn't too watery (I prefer my congee to be thick but my mother and husband prefer their congee to be thinner). #17 Shrimp Hargow, $6.50 prior to tax- This came in an order of 4 and tasted pretty standard. #16 Pork Siumai, $6.50 prior to tax- Also in an order of 4, I thought this was also fine. My mom really liked them (but she really likes pork in general). #21 XLB (Juicy Pork Dumpling), $9.99 prior to tax- This came in an order of 8 and was good. But there was no soup inside. #76 Beef Chow Fun w/ Soy Sauce, $12.95 prior to tax- I felt like the portion was smaller than I had expected, but fair to feed 3- 4 people. I thought the flavors were good. #42 Baked Bolognese, $12.95 prior to tax- This was one of a few regular dishes for me to order when I was kid, whenever I would eat at a Chinese cafe with my father. Although incredibly fatty and unhealthy (because of that thick layer of cheese and oil underneath), I still really enjoyed this dish. But this dish was pretty rich. My husband, who has never had this before, really liked it. Hong Kong Milk Tea, Hot, $5.50 each, prior to tax- We ordered 2 of these, one for my husband and one for myself. We both did not like it because the tea was rather bitter. Hong Kong Milk Tea is supposed to taste over steeped but this was steeped for way too long, overpowering and ruining the flavor of the tea.Hong Kong Ice Lemon Tea, Hot, $5.75- My mom ordered this but I didn't ask her if she liked her drink or not. --------------------------------- (Total= $82.28 after tax, prior to tip)My mother really wanted dim sum, which is why she ordered a few items mentioned above. But she also wanted congee. I wanted the baked bolognese and my husband wanted to make an order since my mother and I were both ordering...and so this is why we had so much food at our table (and leftovers to take home). Our drinks were served in (heat safe) paper cups that is convenient for us to take with us. Same with cold drinks, I saw inside that some patrons had their tea drinks in plastic cups. But I am not sure if refills are offered. Service was pretty attentive, even though we were the only party sitting outside. The employees who took care of us were friendly. One employee had even complimented that my little girl is so good and well behaved (lol, if she wasn't, I wouldn't take her to places to eat out or travel with). The woman's restroom was clean during this visit and adequately stocked with the essentials. The woman's restroom is a single toilet that is a pretty large size.Overall, we had a pretty good dining experience and would come back. Please note that even if you do not speak Chinese (as my Chinese is rather poor...), the servers here also speak English so you shouldn't have any language barriers to dine here.
