Bob A. "If you like spicy Chinese food, *THIS* is the place. There used to be a Spicy City in San Diego that was pretty well-known. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a similar or related owner. A little pricey, but you get *AMAZING* food, and they give you a good amount as well."

Mimi L. "We came in for a Saturday dinner and the experience was surprisingly good. This is a Sichuan / Hunan restaurant and the dishes are pretty authentic. Place isn't big so it gets crowded at peak hours on weekends. The corner booth for us was comfy and spacious enough. We decided on live fish with chilies, spicy clams, spicy chicken and shrimp fried rice. Everything was so delicious in big portions. The fish was fantastic. I appreciated that there was no Sichuan numbing peppers in the spicy dishes! I can't stand numbing flavor not even a little bit. The glutinous rice cakes are always my favorite as dessert. The service was great and they packed the leftover for us too. We were very impressed by the food and service at this local Sichuan restaurant! We will definitely come back from time to time!"

Sandra L. "Here is another updated review of Kuan Zhai Alley.I still love the food from here! I don't love the prices, but it's about the same anywhere you go for this type of food in this area. Some changes that I noticed during my recent takeout on 2/2/2025. They no longer have the Cucumber Salad ($13) on the menu. However, you can still order it if you tell the server and they can have the chef make it. They couldn't give me a solid answer why it was removed from the menu, but it is low key still available, you just have to ask. Another item, Chef's Special Chicken Soup was removed and even if you ask for it, they don't make it anymore. I never got to try it, but I saw a photo here on Yelp and tried to order it but they told me no. I tried the Spicy Dry Pot Cauliflower ($20) this time and although it was really good, I don't think that it's worth $20. Other than that, everything that I normally order from here: Fish in Peppercorn Broth Snakehead Fish Fillet ($28), Mung Bean Jelly in Special Chili Sauce ($13), Stewed Pork Intestine with Duck Blood ($22), and Cucumber Salad ($13) are still my favorite!"

Heather A. "This place was SO good. The food was so rich in flavor, it was extremely reasonably priced for how delicious and large the plates were. The service was 10/10, anything we needed, he was right there to help :) Quiet little spot, have no clue why it isn't more busy. My husband and I agreed that this is the best Chinese food we have had in a while. This is a spicy spot, most of their food is spicy options, but there is always an option to bring it to mild or up to XxhotWe got Kungpau Chicken Spicy Sour Wontons Crispy Garlic Pork Shrimp fried rice I can't to come back and try more things off the menu"

Lina L. "Warning: long wait time on a Friday night. But since I was catching up with my friend, it was fine and worth it. Also they had a heater outside and water for those waiting. The quality of food was very good and the quantity of food was also good. A lot of places these days are giving less so I appreciate the good portion. Although it's a bit pricey I think the quality is worth it. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the rice. It was very dry and hard. Not my preference. But the fried crispy pork was great! Crunchy and not too much batter. We also tried the dried bellflower which is interesting cause it's a crunchy veggie. Would get again. Their snack bar was also good. They had fresh and hot sesame balls with red bean paste filling. Also chips and other snacks."

Bridget W. "Good service and good food. Many other Spicy restaurants I've tried are not spicy enough. And if they are, the flavor isn't there. They have a good balance of both. I would recommend you try them on a day or lunch time in which they are less crowded. Be aware that the plaza is under construction, so come early."

Daniel S. "This neighborhood eatery is so real and gooood! Authentic and actually lived up to the hype by my cousins! I got the mapo fish soft tofu which was cooked perfectly. The stewed lion's head meatballs reminded me of my mama's TT_TT yum~ The spicy wonton filling is flavorful even on its own... I started scarfing them down before I realized i forgot to take pictures. The choose your own cold dishes were all delicious. Last not least, I'm excited to see millet porridge!! This tasty bowl of goodness helps with digestion, pH and just feels so good. Oliver Twist would definitely ask for some more. Rice is included yall! This needs to be an essential service back in all Chinese restaurants. The restaurant is clean, the auntie seats you, gives you tea on the house, takes your order and then goes to the back to cook for you!! And the dishes still come out hot and fast. Yall gotta come fill this place up so she can hire some more help. There's a sign on the door saying they're committed to having the best price all around and it's true. I felt safe yall. So welcoming. I found my new place."
