I personally love ordering from here. I usually get basic/simple things like the California maki or a Philadelphia roll. Maybe some salmon sashimi and the garlic edamame (sometimes spicy sometimes not). I also like their Ami Stamina Noodle Soup. Friendly staff and clean place.

I was craving sushi badly and I looked up sushi restaurants in El Cajon on Yelp and I went with the restaurant with most stars plus it was close to where I was shopping. I don't live in El Cajon, so I had to trust the review on Yelp. I felt good vibes as soon as ai walked in. The host/server was polite and welcoming. They play relaxing yet upbeat music in the background. I normally order an assortment nigiri, but thought, "What the heck, let's try something different, but with salmon." So I ordered the tiger role and sweet potato tempura. It was perfect. It hit the spot! I will have to come back and try their nigiri. I might add, the rice portion to the tiger role was perfect. Some places make their rolls too big where you end up stuffing your face with just one piece. The tempura sweet potatoes were large and filling. I also ordered a delicious large sake. The most expensive rolls with the worst taste! Imitation crab was not fresh, it was chewy in the Crunch roll. The crunchies weren't crunchy at all, more like stale. Everything was overpriced for the size we received. I bought four different types of rolls and they were all horrible. Was expecting a lot better quality for the money I spent!

If you're in East County and looking for a no-frills sushi spot, Ami's it. Ami has been a staple go-to for those not trying to risk it at newer spots. This spot has definitely remained consistent with quality, presentation, and prices. It's also my go to spot for Vegas Rolls that don't cost an arm and a leg. Ami is a more homey spot, with minimal fight for seating. While it's a bit outdated on the inside, their sushi remains progressively good and decent. Be sure to check their specials on the board by their window. They change often and is usually offer some great entrees. We ordered a Vegas Roll, Fried Gyoza, Egg Rolls, and the Chicken Teriyaki special that came with Cali maki. It was cheaper than the menu price and looked exactly like what I'd receive. The Vegas Roll is my absolute favorite and it stays amazing. It hit the spot and cured my craving. Not too much eel sauce or spicy Mayo, so I was about it. They provided a decent amount of wasabi and ginger for those who mix wasabi with soy sauce. Gyoza and Egg Rolls were cooked perfectly and filled with meaty fillings. I loved it. I would've ordered mores fried gyoza if we hadn't ordered everything else. The chicken teriyaki special was super good. We really enjoyed the teriyaki sauce, zucchini, broccoli, and cauliflower. The chicken was cooked perfectly and wasn't dry or tough. Pretty sure it was thigh meat and a good reason why it was cooked to perfection. The Cali Maki were small and extremely enjoyable. Overall, this spot is OG and if you know, you go.

Customer service was okay, maybe a 6/10The thing that definitely wasn't enjoyable was my sushi. I had 4 different rolls and can eat that amount no problem. I left with 3 rolls that I couldn't eat. The fish was far from fresh. The flavor was not good at all. I would rate the food and overall 2/10. The reason I rated this a 2 star is because the customer service wasn't terrible. My friend had the teriyaki bowl and said it was very bland.

Ami Sushi hasn't disappointed. We have been coming here since they opened many years ago. We were so happy this place first opened in El Cajon. It's decent sushi and prices are reasonable. We used to come here for Happy Hour when we lived in SD. This was our go-to sushi joint.Decided that we wanted sushi for dinner during our little weekend getaway. Drove 20 min to get there from the hotel, but was worth it. Didn't disappoint. Ordered a Lemon roll. The ponzu sauce was on the side. Be careful putting it on cause it can be overwhelming. For those of you who might be hesitant about the lemon flavor being too much, it isn't. It's a thin sliver so the lemon doesn't overwhelm the rest of the roll. The Caterpillar roll had the eel sauce on the side. I put that over the whole roll cause I like eel sauce. It was a perfect amount. As for the spicy tuna hand roll, they did not skimp on the spicy tuna. By the way, the salmon skin roll is good too. I used to order that back in the day.Every bite of each roll was flavorful. Would definitely come back here on our next weekend getaway.
