I got a DoGiorno frozen personal pizza from this store. I bit into a piece, and it was moldy. I'm not exaggerating, it quite literally has MOLD in it. What the hell.

It appears this store is now closed permanently. The doors are boarded up and there was a sign stating 50% of all items in the store.

#thankyouthursday Alta Vista Foods is the hidden gem of the neighborhood! I love that they have such a nice selection of meats and produce, especially during times when I don't want to visit the larger grocery stores. I can always find something that I can easily whip up for dinner whenever I visit. They also have the tortillas that my husband and I love to make with our breakfast along with items that I would normally pick up from Walgreens across the street. The staff at Alta Vista Foods are always friendly and willing to point you to the direction of where your item can be found. They do have a little of an up charge for certain items, which is to be expected for a small corner store but it is worth the small increase in price to avoid the crowds at the major grocery stores. This is a must visit place if you are looking for some essentials and don't want to travel to the more crowded places.

Probably one of the best bodegas in the city. They have a tremendous variety of items packed into their tiny space. When I first moved into the neighborhood over a year ago, I made the mistake of running to the CVS across the street when I only needed a few items. One day I decided to wander over to Alta Vista. I am still so mad at myself for not discovering them sooner. They have great selections of meat and produce, enough that you could make virtually anything you want for dinner. If you need an item, chances are they have it and really not for that much more than the big grocery stores. The shelf life on their stuff is pretty short. Hence the one star deduction. But for getting something in a pinch, this place is the jam.

This is my go-to store when I get off work and just don't have the energy to head to Jewel. But after what happened last Sunday I may not be back. I went to purchase cat litter and the cashier said, " You can't buy this with LINK!" At first i didn't understand. "excuse me?" I said, " You are cash only now?" CAshier repeated, "You can't buy cat litter with your link card."OH NO SHE DIDN'T. But she did. First off all the cashier telling me I can't purchase with a link has heavily accented English. Who the F**k is she to assume I have a link card. Because I "look" like an immigrant? Most asian looking immigrants I know aren't on link. Plus....I am not an immigrant. I was a navy baby. Father in the US Navy. Mother a navy bride. ALbeit a foreign navy bride. Which makes me as american as APPLE PIE. So no,don't assume I am some immigrant who has LINK. And I assume the heavily accented cashier is also a VERY Recent immigrant. She should learn not to judge. Stores get sued for this very thing. Teach your cashiers not just tell someone , "you can't use your Link card here." The guy in front of me wasn't told, "You can't use your Link card." He wasn't even asked about it. But I was. And no, I don't have link. I have a job, that while it doesn't make me rich,it provides for me, and I make too much money for a LINK CARD or any other government assistance. I did end up buying my cat litter, as I pulled out my gold TCF debit card that looks nothing like a link card. I should have went elsewhere. I was so fuming mad that she assumed I was a link card user. I felt embarrassed and I don't even use LINK. I can only imagine how bad actual Link users feel. Also as a cat owner feel even more offended. Was your cashier trying to tell me that cat owners are more likely to use link? Because dog owner buying his dog food was given a sweet synthetic smile with no questions asked. GRR or shall I say... "HISS!"

I've lived here for a year and I always appreciate that they have fresh produce. It's nice to have a store so close to the train too.

Rapidly becoming my go-to destination for cheap groceries. The selection is pretty amazing for the small size of this store. The produce is surprisingly good - I discovered that I love Brussels Sprouts at this place (well, also 'cos of Ellen M's cooking suggestion - saute in garlic and lotsa butter).Minus a star 'cos it gets a leeeeetle claustrophobic at times, it's a really tiny shop.

This place has EVERYTHING! Sure, the shelves are packed tightly with a variety of goods, but I can usually find what I'm looking for. The only exception is a limited meat selection. Also, the produce here is not very fresh. I have gotten some bad vegetables accidentally. The Alta Vista does carry a lot of Mexican products, so it's convenient when I decide it's Fajita night. Oh, and they have this macaroni salad that I'm addicted to. They actually have a door that goes directly in the Sheridan red line station, so it's very convenient. I'm so glad that this place is open- it beats walking to Jewel for sure! And I feel better about supporting local business. The staff is very friendly.

I love this place! The employees are so sweet and take the time to remember you. They have EVERYTHING you need, it's right down the street from me too so it's great if I need to pick things up last minute.
