Had never heard about this place but am so glad my last baby got to go on a fieldtrip here! Our guide Hannah was super knowledgeable and so punny! She really kept the kids, and adult, engaged. While this place is generally only open to schools they are open to the community sometimes, just check out their Facebook page to find out when. I highly recommend checking it out if you get the chance, you completely forget you are even in New Mexico! Such a beautiful forest and so much to learn.

On a school field trip with my 5th grader. This was pretty awesome. Not like any original field trip. We actually hiked. Up and down the mountain. They had a trail ready for learning. It was a very nice experience.

Used to be open to the public, but no more -- only on a few "special days." Hard to find, between a trailer park and run-down, closed stores. On 128 acres owned by Albuquerque Public Schools (often mired in controversy) for 5th grade student interpretative hikes. Not worth the time and effort, even on one of the few special days.A far better experience is nearby Sandia Peak in the Cibola National Forest, more trails, 11,000 square miles of views including Albuquerque at night, picnic areas, restaurant, and a tram ride on the world's third largest span.Hiking and great views are also available just south of Tijeras, also on federal land.
