As a resident of South 14, Morning Star is my sole saving grace for last minute staples, a quick dinner, and/or random household items. But even if we did have other options up here (and things are moving in that direction), I would remain a devout fan of all things Morning Star. Connie and Russell, the owners, are two of the kindest people I've met on the mountain, and they run a down home grocery/restaurant. They greet all the locals by name, and extend warmth to visitors who are just passing through as well. The walls are lined with photos of local residents and quirky sayings that add to the homey atmosphere. The pizza (with homemade sourdough crust) and Manzano burgers (1/4 lb green chile cheese burger with all the fixings) are truly delicious, and made to order. You can call in an order for pick up or go in and sit at a huge picnic table chatting with local characters to enjoy your food. The burritos are great, too, and available fresh or frozen for later. Morning Star also has a good collection of grocery items for snow days or last minute dinners, including everything from cake mix, to eggs, to frozen dinners. If you need smokes, batteries, or motor oil--you can likely find it here. Connie also works with local artists to promote their goods, and you can always find fun gifts from paintings to ornaments to cards here. I'm moving to a big city soon, and I'll sorely miss my neighborhood mercantile.

Best breakfast burrito I ever had. Bacon/green chile and eggs and potatoes. Go there now! You will be glad you did. I am a bit of a foodie and I love to cook too.
