This is a "must-stop" spot if you're in the area. I'm so amazed by the beautiful minerals, rocks, and materials mother Earth hid for us to uncover. New Mexico Tech is known for their mineral/materials/energetic/etc. research, so come see the materials they found for us!Although the museum is small, there is no admission fee. Everything is on display with the type of mineral and it's location. There are some categorized displays such as Minerals of the US, All Turquoise, or Minerals of North America. There was also a box by the entrance with a bunch of rocks. I took a few home as souvenirs. Extremely convenient because I actually love collecting rocks whenever I travel and hike in other places. Thank you NM!Definitely a place to check out, get some geology lessons, and see the beautiful rocks! Especially for those who are into "stones, quartz, etc."

This town probably doesn't get many visitors because there isn't much to see. It's about an hour below Albuquerque. However, being as I'm a newbie crystal and rock collector, we saw the very small sign advertising Mineral Museum and got off the I-25 freeway. So glad we did. Yes, no admission price to get in. But the best part is a big collection of stones & minerals were for sale at cheap prices. This is because they were donated by private collectors and the museum wasn't marking them up. The girl working there was super friendly and informative. She said meteorites are rare but when they hit the earth the impact actually create a new rock called tektite. We bought an arrow head from India and other stones from exotic locations worldwide for only $25 total. I briefly walked through all the glass cases and yes you could spend hours there if you're a gem geek but we didn't stay long as we had to head out to Elephant Butte.

This place is a must see!!! And it's free too. We sTopped I'm on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It was a great time to go. You could spend hours here loOking at and learning about hundreds of mineral and rock specimens. It was seriously incredible!!!!!!! I recommend that everybody should go to this museum at least once. It's also located on the university campus in Socorro with convenient and clearly marked parking areaas in front of the museum. There are also huge specimens of petrified wood outside next to the pond and waterfall.

I visited the Mineral Museum at the NM Bureau of Geology at the end of April. It is a must-see museum for any rock hound as well as anyone interested in New Mexican history. The staff was very accommodating and pleasant. The gift shop offers an array of gifts. They also sell some rocks and minerals. As a gem and jewelry collector, I would suggest that they collaborate with a skilled lapidarist to offer faceted gems. It might be an excellent way to raise additional funds.

I definitely have some interesting stuff to look at and some stuff for the kids to actually touch your hands on exhibits. A lot of unique stuff just not as big as I thought it would be. Overall an interesting time

This gem (pun intended) is a great place to ooo and aaaa over all sorts of rocks. Some are for purchase too. I had visited this museum at its old spot (which I think has been torn down). This new spot on the campus is a tremendous upgrade. There is plenty of light and lots of space to view all the rocks. My favorite are the fluorescent rock exhibit. This is a great place to take time out to enjoy some time to see things that you don't normally see. It was a warm day in Socorro and we were waiting for our daughter to finish class. I was so impressed with everything that she finished class and I took her on a tour as well. The gift shop is a wonderful addition. I found books for my class. There are experiment kits, puzzles, and plush animals for sale in the gift store. NMT did a great job on the new museum. Price is great too. FREE!!!
