Chirashi at Kohnami in Santa Fe. Fantastic, except for the fake crab, which was old and doesn't belong on good sushi.

This place was busy with great energy when we visited for the first time. A jazz trio was setting up to play. Jazz, in a Japanese restaurant? They ended up being a great addition to the evening and created a very relaxed and fun atmosphere. Music was just the right volume where you could still have a conversation. The food was better than we expected, after reading some of the reviews here. We ordered several different appetizers and all of them were good. The only one I was not a fan of was the shrimp shoe my, which I think might have been frozen. Our favorites for the night were the spicy tuna salad, and tai carpaccio dish. We didn't have any rolls, but the ones we saw being served from the bar looked amazing. We will definitely return when we're in Santa Fe again and try their rolls.

This place is totally underrated. Coming from CA I'm biased and this place was phenomenal for being in the middle of the desert. My husband came here probably 15yrs ago and loved it. It's still great. Lunch specials were perfectly presented and filling. Salmon sushi and teriyaki was delicious. The best part it doesn't break the bank.

I love this sushi shop. In the back they have a cool and unique seating area on /in the floor. They occasionally have live music to accompany the tasty sushi as well!

Oh, where do I begin? The service was good. The sushi? Well, let's just say it was edible. The main entrees were a true culinary adventure in mediocrity. I ordered yaki soba and received a portion fit for a toddler - five bites and it was gone. My husband and kid ordered ramen and both agreed it was... passable. My other kid ordered the Katsu bento box and struggled to finish it, which was no surprise considering they even managed to botch plain white rice. Truly, a dining experience to remember to not go back.

Because COVID was still prevalent when we were in town we ordered takeout from Kohnami. Everything we ordered was ready when promised and pickup was handled in a safe and professional manner.Among other things, we ordered Miso soup, edamame, seaweed salad, spicy tuna rolls, avocado cucumber rolls, green chili tempura rolls, and shiitake mushroom rolls. All were quite tasty and several were vegan which was important and necessary for half of our family. I thought the green chili tempura rolls were a particularly successful fusion of classic sushi restaurant rolls and southwestern cuisine. All that said, Kohnami is an average sushi place -- worth patronizing but not worth five stars.

First time here and we had the pleasure of being served by Umi, it was probably the best service we have received in many years. The food was nithing short of amazingness, the tempura appetizer was great, the bento boxes gave great variety, and the Santa fe roll was great. The use of unique fresh ingredients really showed their care to crafting great food. The restaurant itself was clean and we'll maintained but also under a bit of construction but didn't affect the experience at all. Great place!!

I've been here 3 times since they opened up again, and it gets better every time. Service is attentive and friendly. Sushi rolls are large in size and the fish and veggies are fresh. We had 4 rolls and edamame all under $60! The bonsai roll is one of our favorites. On a Saturday night we parked about 2 blocks away but it was a beautiful evening for a summer walk. A must try for sushi in Santa Fe!

I would imagine I was just as excited to see Kohnami re-open as it was one of my favorite eating spots prior to Covid. I'm sorry to say my excitement was diminished considerably after my first visit back. The familiar Japanese faces behind the sushi bar that would greet upon arriving were not there. The fish in the refrigerated bar was scarce as I walked back to get a table in the back. Our server was friendly and came to the table soon after we sat down. I was with two friends who spent many years in Okinawa so are very well versed on Japanese food.We all ordered bento boxes to get a sampling of everything including a sushi roll that comes with the box. I ordered the salmon teriyaki. The portion was good but the teriyaki sauce was thick and glopped onto the top of the fish. It was not the typical light but flavorful coating that one would normally find with Japanese food. The tempura serving was just OK. Not a light batter but heavier than expected and the dipping sauce tasted like it was just soy sauce and salty. The sushi portion was a California roll but the crab was minced as you might find in a supermarket and nothing remarkable.Overall disappointing at best.
