We always enjoy the family, the great atmosphere and of course Green Chicken and Red Pork Tamales.Worth the walk up Acequia Madre to absorb the flora, running water and old houses to linger and drink in history.Wait, What isn't this a food review?

Johnnies Cash is more than a neighborhood grocery. From the moment you walk in the door you are greeted with a friendly smile and the smell of fresh tamales. Visiting and frequenting this historical store is a must for everybody.

This is a piece of true Santa Fe history, with the best tamales in town. They have a wide selection of cold and hot drinks, and every thing under the sun. Pictures of the rich intergenerational ownership adorn the walls along with other memorabilia. It's actually a true destination in and of itself if you are in town. Well worth the visit. It's also the only place to get last minute things in the north east side of town, and always has ample parking.

Johnnie's Cash Store is an oddball little place in a residential neighborhood. It's the neighborhood grocery/convenience store, and one can drop by without having to go downtown or to one of Santa Fe's numerous strip malls. It's in a nice, quiet neighborhood, not far from the arts district that is Canyon Road. I'd stop by there when going on long walks in the powerful sunlight up at 7000 feet above sea level. It's a great place to grab a soda. At Johnnie's Cash Store, I was introduced to Mexican peanut butter marzipan&sangria-flavored soda. It's a hangout for college students, tucked away among apartments and houses. It's the place to stock up on caffeine (or alcohol) to tide you through "War and Peace." It's a friendly, old-fashioned store.

This little store is tucked between million dollar homes in what the locals call the "Historical Inner East Side" of Santa Fe. We go there every October to buy frozen tamales to bring home. They sell them in sealed packs of a dozen and you can choose either green (chicken) or red (pork). If you are flying home with a cooler of roasted Hatch or Socorro chile the airlines don't permit you to have ice in the cooler. So I use a few packages of frozen tamales from Johnnie's as my "ice" to keep the chile cold. It has worked perfectly for 20+ years in a row.

Johnnies is a true old time convenience store. It is hard to find tucked in a neighborhood, but worth the effort. Johnnie's daughter-in-law was keeping the shop. She said it takes all of his 8 kids and grandchildren to do what he once did by himself. We bought tamales to bring home. A fun experience.i

I call this store the "householder's best friend". Need a lemon for a recipe? They've got it. Having a nic fit? You're covered. Forgot to buy dixie cups for your kid's birthday party? No problem. This is the last store of its kind in Santa Fe and it is run by kind, generous people who care deeply about the neighborhood. They even give out lavish bags of candy on Halloween. It's the best!
