Hidden treasure. I absolutely love this shop and could spend all day just looking around and talking to the owner who is gracious, inviting, very nice and possesses great knowledge in the Japanese culture. Owner/operator not only took her time trying to help me find what I was looking for but she directed me to another shop when I was unable to find exactly what I was wanting for my mothers birthday. I happily found/purchased the perfect gift for my mother but I would have never found it without all of this owners assistance. I have already returned to this shop multiple times, had great conversations with the owner and have found many unique and beautiful pieces. There really is no other place like it in Albuquerque.

I was looking for bonsai, but they had a limited amount. They have a few Japanese art pieces and offer classes as well. The workers were not very friendly and standoffish making asking questions difficult. It's a very small shop. I was hoping to see more bonsai.

Hanayagi isn't JUST a Japanese Garden Shop! They have a great little Japanese gift shop also that is almost like going to a Japanese garage sale. I love the cool gifts, as well as their great collection of windchimes and ikebana & bonsai supplies. This is a MUST VISIT place when I have multi-culturally interested friends in town. It's just too cool to miss.

I started visiting the shop back in 2017. I have always had a good experience and have found many items that could not be found elsewhere. The prices are the same for garden tools, books, journals, and calendars as other shops of this size. I found the owner very friendly and certainly knowledgeable about Japan and the specialty items in the shop. And all I had to do was ring the bell.

The purpose of my review is to share my experiences as a customer. It is unlikely I was the only person that felt mistreated while there. I have been a patron for years, but felt I was treated poorly in Hanayagi various times. Regardless if the poor treatment was intentional or not (did not realize it, having a bad day, was triggered by something etc.), it was still inappropriate. I feel that when someone steps into a business, it is best not to point out what they lack. Even if it is meant in the best way. It just did not come across as kind.I received this response from the owner:"I am mystified about why, after approximately 1.5 years since your visit to my shop, you posted "reviews" of such a negative nature. We had a friendly conversation about your wedding plans. I am not a clothing store and carry only a few pieces of vintage Japanese haori and kimono and nothing in your size. Your statement that I am insensitive to your mixed racial background is totally incorrect. I have an African American son-in-law, African American-Hispanic grandchildren, Indonesian-African American grandchildren and Indonesian-Hispanic grandchildren. Any one who knows me and my family knows your statements are preposterous. I consider your efforts to damage me and my business to be nothing more than cyber bullying and will report them as such."I was unaware that sharing my experiences as a customer is cyber-bullying. This response from the owner was unfortunate to say the least. I have had poor experiences in the shop for more than 10 years, not just the past year.

Insanely overpriced but definitely beautiful, the owners were very nice and decent beside the staff from the back staring at me and my boyfriend shopping it's definitely a place to check out. They have a lot of unique Japanese culture products, items, as well as gifts including air-plants that run from $10-$55
