I completely lost track of time here and spent over an hour in this small but cozy store. I enjoyed my time talking to Mr. Lewis, the shopkeeper, a lot during my time perusing his collection of first editions. Thank you for allowing readers to not only touch but leaf through your rare collection, this is quite unimaginable in most used and rare book stores. I never thought I would be able to flip through a first edition of Oliver Twist as well as view original pamphlets that Dickens' works were printed in (ephemerals, as I learned).I hope to come in again the next time I am in town!

I had a fine time here and wish I could have stayed longer. I'm a bookdealer myself, so it was nice to talk to a fellow bibliomaniac of my own generation. The shop has a LOT of fine stock and I wish I'd had more I could spend on transferring some of it to my own little location. As it was, he sold me some good titles I could take back to Texas with me, treated me like a colleague, and completely failed to behave like I was a tourist--and that's a GOOD thing! ::martha::

I discovered this little gem of a bookshop back in the summer of 2009. I'm often in Santa Fe on business (well, occasionally in the summer). So, a few weeks ago, I stopped in again.I've a relatively recent collector of rare books, perhaps a quizzical little hobby for someone so young, cool, and technology-dependent (heh). It's an expensive, little hobby for someone who works in the arts. I lust after lots of truly old things. However, I thankfully have a disposition to a select only recently dead and/or living authors. Gunstock Hill Books is wonderful for this. They have an entire room of modern first editions, many signed, and beautifully preserved in plastic. I would come here for this room alone. They also have a good collection of books about topics specific to the southwest and western parts of the US as well as (I think) a decent collection of art and children's literature. There's a small case in the front room with some truly rare (and/or signed) treasures. I've lusted after one particular volume for over a year. While these things are expensive, they are truly quite reasonable in the realm of rare books (and would easily be twice the price in some of the rare bookshops I've visited in the US).

Mostly rare and antiquarian books. Has a solid selection of modern firsts and Western Americana, and an OK selection of other subjects including science, travel, and history.

I was denied entry/told to leave because I had my service dog with me, who is allowed anywhere I am. I explained this to the owner and that my dog cannot be turned away based on federal law but he said he had expensive books and didn't not care about disability protections (like he is the only place in Santa Fe with expensive art). I was nice and took my business to other book stores in town which were lovely to my service animal.

Absolutely pleased with Gunstock Hill Books. Out of all the many many pieces of literature I've collected, mostly through the mail, I have to say this place in particular ought to be considered a gold-standard in shipping technique and care. Also, when I called to compliment the proprietor he was as grateful as I for the transaction. Nice to speak with someone who seems to care about the part they play and their influence on the literary world. I will certainly be looking to Henry there in the future when I'm tracking down my next collection piece...Cheers

I'm writing this review as a virtual customer. They have an abundance of rare Americana and western US books. Would highly recommend if you are a sucker for history! They will be my first stop for all books in the future.

I first met the owner accidentally stumbling on a couple of Greek history books he had. Over the course of the past couple years I was so pleased to discover he had a very rare book on Greek history which he offered to me at a very reasonable price. He is quite knowledgeable and worthy.
