Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico

Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico

Shawn B. "Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico (TGRCNM) a non profit organization benefitting the trans community of New Mexico as well as the community itself. TGRC provides a safe space for transgender persons of all ages, offers programs for rehabilitation, life skills, as well as medical services to our brothers and sisters. TGRC works with the trans youth to help facilitate smooth and healthy transitions, giving parents counseling on coping skills and what to expect next. Clients can utilize the resource center drop in from 1-6pm. Computers are made available, snacks are provided, and medical care and assistance is all free to those who seek it. The center also houses a program on harm reduction, providing a needle exchange program for those who may be struggling with substances and want to keep themselves safe and clean. The needle exchange program is free to all who want to stop in and exchange. HIV testing and results are free to the public as well, and given in site. Other testing kits are periodically offered so just check before hand if you are interested in getting tested. Snacks and coffee are provided at no cost. TGRC is a non profit running on federal grants, donations, and volunteers. Adrian and Zane the founder and co-founder are fantastic men doing a great service to their community and brothers in sisters in need. The staff is friendly and professional and welcome all. Just the same way we fought for Black men and women to have equal rights, for gay and lesbian marriage equality we can fight for equality of every man and woman straight, gay, lesbian, trans, cisgender, or non-binary. A person is a person, each created in the same way, each with something to give or teach one another, each with a different but vital purpose for the world. Open your eyes and heart, see the world as one."

Howie K. "Yeah, I should probably launch this review with a few words about the terrific performances in the theatre, but I feel like I have a higher calling, here. I'm reviewing a building that houses a library, after all. Libraries are tantamount to temples in my feeble lil' echelon of Godliness, churches of smarts, they are, and the South Broadway Cultural Center owns one of the best in the city. Books, people, are our salvation. Okay, I'm stepping up on my soapbox. Libraries are our greatest gift to the free world. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.First: libraries are free. Ray Bradbury claims he got his college education in a library, and I believe it. When I was looking for a job, in the midst of the recession, I had nothin', and my library provided every resource: books on the next career move, books on tape for road trips, books and activities for my kid, CDs for my kid, CDs for me. Second: I discovered Ray Lamontagne thanks to the library, same with Agnes Obel and a host of others. Third: I used the downtown library as my starting point as a grant writer, I found free tools that would've cost a hefty price in my home. Simply put, libraries are the most religiously exempt, publicly accessible resources to enlightenment on the planet, and the SBCC owns a great one. It's huge, it's easy to navigate and it supports local artists, which were in full display during my most recent visit. The whole facility is gorgeous. And the shows around here are getting much, much better. Thanks for signing on The Box, guys. They're a perfect fit."

Howie K. "Lomas avenue, between Washington and San Mateo, is quickly becoming Thrift Store Row, Jr. My mind's compass can locate at least four shops on this stretch and they all vie to thumb wrestle with the standards on Menaul. Bargainbox is certainly unique, and perhaps one of the very best in the city if you know what you're seeking. Here's my take on why you should go.As a fellow Yelper mentioned, there are "no overt religious undertones" which is a biggie for me. Thrifting is Christ's work, Buddha's work, the work of the Great Spirit, you name it, sharing is caring, yo. The employees (I doubt they receive a sixpence for their energies) are Midwestern kind. And the place just beams with pride. The back area is all about carefully preserved and loved crap, like housewares and paintings and plates and lamps and, well, all of that stuff George Carlin warned us about. Everything on these shelves works, they're solid pieces, something I can't state about the competition. But most of the store is devoted to clothing, and most of that is for the female persuasion. I did glance it all over, and I thought the offerings were solid: conservative, smart, really high quality or reconditioned. The square footage is limited, so don't come for furniture. I'll be back again and again, and perhaps again, because I've learned to really love bargain hunting and these guys know how to scavenge."

I stopped by with the intention of going to see the exhibition at the Womanhouse and I could not be sure (I did not ask either) if they rotate or change the gallery's exhibition. Robert C. "Where else can you watch 545 hot air balloons launch in one spot every year for the past 51 years? Booked hotel reservations for one week at inflated rates six months in advance. Paid airfare to Albuquerque, 1200 miles flying distance, higher than the airfare to Honolulu, 2400 miles flying distance. Paid rental car through Costco rentals. Got up at 5am, ate breakfast at 530am at our hotel, left the hotel at 6am. The 8 mile drive took 40 minutes, the last 2 miles 30 minutes, with traffic gridlock off the freeway 25 heading north. And this was with traffic cones and traffic control supervised by police. Paid $20, cash only, to park. Walked 20 minutes from the parking lot near Presbyterian Administration to the entrance to the festival. Paid $33 for two $15 tickets, no senior discount, but children under 12 free, with a 10% surcharge for credit card. Tickets have no in and out privileges and are good for only the current session once scanned. Wore long pants, heavy shirt, heavy sweater, and Hoka running shoes for the 2.5 miles of walking. It's cold at 6am with temperatures in the 40s. You can bring in chairs, wagons, foods, strollers, but no alcohol and no dogs!Huge lines for the dozen of porta potties. The more reason I prefer the separate mens and womens lines. 7am starting time for the special shapes balloon rodeo. Wall to wall people, including many with wagons for their kids. Watched images of Yoda, Tasmanian Devil, London Bobby, Police Dog, Felix the Cat, . Some like Darth Vader and Mirabelle the Cow never made if off the ground. 830am the special shapes balloons start coming back to the ground, and deflated. Took a picture of the wife just as one special shapes balloon deflated. Wife took a picture of me, with the balloon tip of the tongue right on my forehead. Trekked back to the car by 10am. Empty parking lot. Car next to us had two adults sleeping, mouths open, and all windows open. They too got up at 5am, and knew traffic was bad going back to the freeway.Came back Saturday. Woke up at 4am, left the hotel at 5am. Took 2 hours to cover 8 miles. Left freeway 25 three exits before, and took the Pan American bypass through two exits. Arrived at the parking lot at 7am, 20 minute walk to get to the balloon fiesta field, just in time to see the mass ascension. One hour later winds pick up and the rest of the balloons including Darth Vader are left to deflate before getting off the ground. At least I didn't come back Sunday, as the winds were so strong that they couldn't even launch the balloons, much to the disappointment of all those who got up at 4am, fought hours of congested traffic, and paid good money to attend. No refunds."

Howie K. ""I never, in my wildest imagination, would've thought I'd be here, farming, man," Eric muttered, laughing to himself. We were shoveling s*it together. Manure. "I grew up in Denver, and I was always in gangs, my whole life, that was my life. But you know, it catches up with you. I went to prison. Thirteen long years, bro. And the thing is, if it hadn't been for my little brother, who knew about La Plazita, I probably would've went right back to gangbanging."We were standing in the middle of a field, prepping the dirt for planting season. I hadn't prompted this advertisement, I was just shoveling s*it with Eric. But I was locked in. He continued. "But next thing I know I'm learning how to plant a garden, and grow food, you know, to feed myself and everybody I know. They gave me this opportunity to start over, and now I got things I never thought I could have. I bought a car last week. I'm looking to buy a house. I have enough money to eat, I'm comfortable, you know?" And I had to set down the shovel. This dude was telling a pretty moving story."People think, like, farming, what's farming? Why would I want to do that? But see, I get here in the morning and get out of my truck, and it's so quiet, and there's a few cranes standing out in the field, and I say to myself, This is the best. This is the best job in the world."Albino Garcia, Jr., the President of this incredible organization, has completed his work in this realm. Thanks to his vision, people like Eric tell these kinds of stories, lots of them. The ambition and scope of La Plazita institute are far too vast to describe in an online review, but they involve rehabilitating incarcerated youth, indigenous cultural sustainability, entrepreneurial leadership, fostering artistry, and helping folks get back to their roots, especially in the soil. These people can use your help, too."

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico

Howie K. "Past experience and contemporary parenting merge in this review. My wife and I just finished a conversation with our 14 year-old daughter about marijuana. For those of you uninitiated, who at one point used the herb, fair warning: um... good luck. Many of her friends have tried it, and my wife and I are of the (perhaps naive) assumption that she hasn't, yet. We try to offer an open dialogue about anything: pregnancy/abortion, peer pressure, politics, boys vs. girls, it's all on the table, including drugs. I sit here sipping a glass of wine, so I'd be a hypocrite to deny the discussion regarding controlled substances.I'll get back to our talk in a minute. The grand theme, here, is that parenting is unbelievably hard. And parents are never perfect. And we can never truly meet our kids on their level, even if we remember, with absolute clarity, the hell that was Growing Up. Many kids (especially those whose parents refuse to honestly talk about this rite of passage) get lost, and they need a big brother or sister who do not exist. The most mature of the lot, those with tremendous fortitude, turn to BBBS. I met Mateo in 2005.Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana and left a wasteland in the wake. Like most Americans, I felt an obligation to help, but I didn't have much money and furthermore I didn't feel like writing a check would calm my conscience. I signed up with BBBS because I believed if I could help just one kid, a kid who was asking for direction, a kid just like I was, then it could make a difference. Over the next three years I hung out with Mateo, a kid who was born into a tough life, gangs surrounded him, whose dad was in and out of jail, who had a little sister and otherwise no kin of any kind. We went to a few movies, he helped me dig a garden in my backyard, we went to a batting cage and an arcade and we watched a game or two. We hung out when we could.I lost him, shortly after he turned 16. I'm guessing he joined a gang. Life at home never improved and he never opened up to me about the ugly stuff. I was a little old for a big brother by then, 32, so perhaps I wasn't the perfect match. And I wonder about him, constantly. I hope he's okay. I doubt he thinks about me. We parents are never perfect. We skirt around the stuff that we're not particularly proud of, and some of us refuse it altogether. BBBS of Central New Mexico serves kids of every stripe who strive for a way out, in any capacity. The organization was terrific, setting up events like bowling and community get-togethers that strove to connect these broken puzzle pieces with solid people in our community. From what I understand this tradition continues today. I cannot advocate enough for this organization. My own kid knows that her parents know that the pressures of teenage life are relentless. Hopefully, she understands that we've been there, we've done that (more than we'll admit), and more than anything, we just want her to be safe. I wish my parents had been so honest. And still I wonder whether this is enough. She could use a big sister. For now, she has us, survivors."

Serendipity Day School

Serendipity Day School

Jeremy S. "Terrific for young childhood development. We were looking for a daycare that had some lose but present structure with a methodical approach when we found Serendipity. I was very pleased with the way Paul presented us with a detailed play by play log of our 3 yr old's first couple days. We knew who she played with, what she did, whether she had any episodes of stress or joy, and had a lot of confidence that she was integrating nicely. Sumi and Paul also performed a home visit, and there are parent events at the school so we could see first hand how delighted and close the rapport was with our kid. At mid-point and the end of the year they also provide feedback and assess the basic developmental indicators such as shape recognition, letters, puzzles, as well as social indicators such as imaginative play with others and expressing herself to her peers. The teachers are very good at welcoming the kids when they come in so they have smooth departure. When I return at 5 they are always involved and engaged in creative and constructive activities such as puzzles, blocks, role play or even preposition bingo. I feel that my child has undergone a graceful and significant transition from wildebeest to someone who is well on track toward being prepared for the kindergarten environment."

Mandy's Farm

Mandy's Farm

Howie K. "Horses. Farm fresh eggs. Alpacas, baby goats, a curated garden and peaceful shaded patio, green, green acres. If I'm looking for a term to describe my visits to Mandy's Farm, I'm going with Idyllic. The property is true country livin' and from what I understand, that's exactly what this nonprofit that assists folks with developmental disabilities -- chiefly, those on the autism spectrum -- is going for. What an incredible organization. And when you think about it, of course, simplifying is the solution. Individuals on the spectrum tend, generally, to really struggle with the peripheral, what's going on around them, ambient noise and motion and shadow, and the urban everyday is absolutely clattering with these distractions. Mandy's Farm provides a permanent residence -- it's a home, first and foremost -- for people who need to take shelter from the storm. Residents learn to simply live, whether that's cooking or growing food or riding horses, the main facility includes a specially designed swimming pool for rehabilitation, the farm provides tactile experiences and interactions with nature. How friggin' genius, man. Essentially, the story goes that the farm was named after Mandy, her parents were concerned about what Mandy would do as she matured and they got older, if she might struggle to handle the busy world around her, and so they built this farm, and Mandy started her own little business, E is for Eggs (she loves Sesame Street), and the farm has grown to support many people, a job training program, and produce they sell to local growers markets. You can experience the idyllic by volunteering your time, any time of the year. Just contact them."

I have been an opera season ticket holder since 1973, fires at Lyric Opera in Chicago and then at Washington National Opera in the Kennedy Center on the banks of the Potomac. I was a supernumerary at WNO for years. Yeah, I've been around a bit, with occasional forays to the Met (love) ) and Santa Fe (meh). Opera Southwest need not take a back seat to any company. Most performances are as good as or better than those at WNO. And why travel to Santa Fe to hear a performance that is marred by the sounds of truck traffic on the highway. Distracting at least. Opera Southwest's recent performance of The Pearl Fishers was the very est I have ever heard. The most recent opera, Rossini's rarely performed William Tell, yesterday (October 22, 2017) excelled in all aspects -- singing (principals and chorus), orchestra, lighting, costumes, and direction. I find The conductor, Anthony Barrese, to be an Albuquerque treasure. I was blown away, as was my companion. Do I miss WNO or the Lyric? No -- I have Opera southwest to keep me warm."

It is a members only club, membership requirements being active duty in the US Armed Services, you'd have to check the details but members are allowed guests and family. The atmosphere is amazing. It feels like a 1960 southwest country club, only missing the thick smoke of the past due to recent laws changes. There are still full ashtrays next to the men's urinals, an artifact from the past. At least six bars provide coverage for every event possible, and they respond to requests for 'coke' with whiskey with a confused look. You will be ejected if you carry your alcohol across the dance floor, a minor inconvenience because the servers are happy for you to order your drink direct from the bar. Table service is spotty at best so the whole meal can take the form of an hours-long wait for satisfaction. As stated, this is a wholly ancient ritual dining hall. People you respectfully called 'Nana' once waltzed here on the weekends. Folded flags sit silently in side display cases, honoring those who once served to ensure the existance of such a place. There are side hallways and an electronic gambling room, pool tables and dart boards hidden in back rooms, and a feeling of history and mystery everywhere about the place. If you have a family member or loved one who served in the armed forces I would highly recommend checking this place out. It is a classic dance hall of the highest caliber. PB&J Family Services

PB&J Family Services

Howie K. "PB&J Family Services is certainly one of the more lauded, awarded and active nonprofit organizations in Albuquerque, but what do they do, exactly? Well, the scope is really tough to explain, but for me, it starts with parenting, specifically with dads. Of course, fatherhood is a subject I'm particularly passionate about, I'm simply fascinated by our ever-shifting non-nuclear family roles, the ways in which we dads now often balance the homemaking demands of everyday life, and more than anything, our lack of experience on the job. The parental job, that is. In many cases, we grew up in homes without solid father figures of our own, and when we go out into the big grown world, we often don't know where to begin with our own children. At PB&J, training dads to be dads often begins when dads get out of prison. "Imagine watching a father helping his daughter tie her shoelace out on this playground, or pretend to cook, or help her on the playground equipment," the Executive Director, Susannah Burke, said to our group during a tour. "Very often, this is the first time they've had an opportunity to connect, to share one-on-one experiences, and to learn how to care for their child. We watch relationships form and grow deeper, we watch kids grow stronger, it all starts right here."And we haven't begun talking about the moms. They're strongly represented here, too. This center offers more than day care, it's more like day school, day training, and day support, for endless families in Albuquerque's south valley and beyond. Over 40+ years they've held programs all over the state, including women's prisons. Personally, I love that what they do isn't overtly complicated. They provide shelter, a safe zone, and love, so people can thrive. New Mexico is blessed to have this organization."

Being a thespian veteran of this town, I can honestly state that even great performances have their bad nights, and crowds can occasionally kill a good show. So there's my caveat. I've seen a few terrific performances in this space and I'm confident in stating that Aux Dog is putting together some of the most solid work in the city.I've seen plays in every space imaginable: outdoor, round, Broadway and Off, in classrooms and boardrooms and impromptu shows at parties and bars. Aux Dog is the kind of place I truly love most: intimate, the actors could breathe on you, every sound and emotion and movement makes a difference. This company is consistently putting out material which scratches my theatrical itch, and I'm so glad they're doing the work in Nob Hill, which doesn't have another space like it.The space itself (oh yeah, that's why I'm writing this) is simple, comfortable. The seat banks are in good condition and not too close. The reception area showcases great local art and supports coffee talk. Management seems solid. One tip: get your tickets early. ABQ can be lame in this respect. Very few people buy early, but the day of show we often sell out. Be on the safe side."

Mark W. "Great little Veterans club with a lot of friendly people. As with any Veterans Club, they have a great mix of older and younger Veterans."
