This facility contracts its medicine doctors out to any doctor with a pulse. The doctor who was attending to patients while we had a loved one staying there lives in Arizona and has to travel to New Mexico for a job. This is common for physicians who get their license suspended in their home state. Our loved one had been in the hospital for bacterial meningitis. They discharged them form Bear Canyon to go home with the understanding that they live alone. We had to have our loved one transported back to the ER 26 hours later. When they tested her blood she had a 21000 white count. This is a huge fail that even novice web md rangers could catch. They discharged a patient from their facility with a life threatening infection. Far too much focus on the pt and nothing at all on the medicine. If you care about your loved one do not place them at bear canyon or any other Genesis facility for that matter. The state is actively investigating this facility.

My father is now on his second stay here for rehabilitation. When he was first discharged less tan a month ago the visiting nurse at home found a massive infection in his heel, surgical site on his knee was infected and he had three abscesses from bed sores. His surgeon rehospitalized him one week later because his body was becoming toxic from the surgical infection; he was only one or two days from full blown Sepsis. After another week plus in the hospital he got discharged and was told he would be sent back to St. Catherine's because their facility had open beds available. He was taken there only to be told there were no beds available and for the last FOUR DAYS he's been stuck in what looks like a jail cell. No phone, no tv, and no one is even watching his food intake or checking the bedsores or surgical site for infection. They didn't even know he's prescribed Ensure to boost his weight or that it was part of his Diabetic stability. Worst is when you speak with anyone about it they say it will be taken care of but they NEVER actually follow through; which puts anyone's loved one there in danger. The staff really truly doesn't give a damn except saying the right thing to the family to get them to feel like it will be taken care of. Which from two stays there now I know is the standard operating procedure when dealing with family or case managers. The state needs to step in and close this warehouse of poor people whose voices are going unnoticed. Very, very sad.

My dad has been here for 2 weeks. He arrived with 0 bed sores, he now has 2, they basically ignore him. He is total care. Blood on bed sheet for 4 days, even after I reported it several times. I finally helped change it myself. I had to bring pillow cases because his pillows had none, no trash can, I bought one, he asked for them to shave his face over a week ago, they never did. He has been left in bed for several days, not getting him up and dressed. He has on the same shirt for 4 days. I changed his shirt last. We are moving him tomorrow, I am so disgusted at this facility, the tech Leo, is awesome, but he can't be there 24/7 - Dad is dying, and on hospice now, I only wanted him to be comfortable in his last days on this earth. June 2017 - These Genesis facilities are the only VA approved places you can put your loved one who has VA - I truly hope VA does their homework and closely checks out these facilities where our war heroes are having to spend their last days, they deserve better!

One comment by a staff writer sums it up the food reminds of bad high school cafeteria food.

A week ago I gave a good review to this place. Well, I take it back. My friend did not get the care that she needed. She passed away Tuesday. Family members, be sure to check on your loved to insure that they are given the care that they need. This place is not good place for your love ones.

My family was torn as to where my mother should be placed for rehabilitation post hip fracture. She's a 73 yr old, little lady. We picked this center due to convenience. We were nothing but pleased with her stay at this center in so many ways. My mother felt safe and well taken care of. Her day and night nurses were so sweet and caring towards her and the aides were fantastic in helping her in so many ways. Peggy was her day nurse and Krishna was her aide. The night nurse (sorry I can't remember her name) and all the other nurses & aides were very attentive and soft and gentle with her. They kept us (my family) well informed with her progress and that really eased our worries. Rehabilitation services were awesome! They worked with my mom pretty extensively and was very motivating. They did an initial assessment that helped encourage my mom on specific goals and motivated her towards achieving those goals plus more. They worked with her twice a day - PT and OT. She was in the center for two weeks, towards the end of her stay, she was wheeling and walking (w/walker) to the PT room on her own! They really gave her the confidence to improve and recover that she really needed. My mom is a total introvert. The center provided many group activities. My mom was completely uninterested. I wish she would of tried. She stays alone a lot (with my father & family) and not really comfortable around people should doesn't know. We (the family) spent as much time with her as possible. The staff was so awesome in welcoming us even when my niece would play the guitar for her granny. It meant a ton for my mom to have her safety net of family around her during this time. The food was good - coffee delivered throughout the day. My Mother was very picky on what she was eating - she really doesn't have taste-buds (for many years); the staff would often ask her what she wanted to eat and bring that. I would often come visit during my lunch break and we share lunch. The food was good. The center was super clean; absolutely not issues.Visiting Physician, Care Managers, - all great. More than anything that staff was really great.. I want to thank you for making my mom feel safe and secure during this scary time for her. You all did a fantastic job helping her to recover. She is at home now and stronger than she was before her fracture. We believe this fall was a "eye-opener" to getting her physical health back on track. She attends outpatient physical therapy twice a week and is 100% off the wheelchair and about 80% off the walker. She uses the walker when she's out in public just for a sense of security. Because she had a stroke (about 7 yrs ago) her balance will never be a 100% but with the rehabilitation she is definitely stronger; so much stronger. This was all possible because of Bear Canyon. So thank you for your diligence and hard work and caring staff. She is doing this good because of your work with her. I am so appreciative in so many ways and so glad we chose your center.Huge appreciation.

Why do I have to leave one star when it isn't even worth one star? We live in California. I was constantly calling my mother who is 94 years old. I was never able to get a hold of her. Not even during the day. I asked many times to have a nurse call me and give me some information on her I never got a call back. What they call food, is completely unacceptable. My husband and I flew out to see her, and when we went directly to her room no one asked us who we were, nor were we stopped. We took her out of a very dark room to the back patio in her wheelchair. Again, no one asked us what we were doing or who we were. We were there for about an hour and a half. There is no sign up sheet when you come into this place. Anyone can come in and go into the patient's room at any time without being questioned. Which is a horrible safety issue. I actually put in written complaints while I was here. Nothing came of them. Please, please do not put your loved one in there. They are heartless and incompetent.

Dido to the / with the one star review people. Much lip service, and that's it. Actions speak louder than words.I'm the POA for my Mom, who was sent there from the hospital.Brandon was / is a paper work guy, "administrator" if you will.I signed a bunch of paper work. Inaccurate info was on some of the paper work. I provided the correct info, which he even already had. When he gave me the finalized documents, NO corrections were made.He approached me with the old information that he was going to submit.I called him on it and he said to find a nurse and tell her to fix it, because he doesn't have a computer...........What?!?He usually at the nurses station lolly gagging and goofing off any way.The one time he called me on the phone to verify something, he was asking for another person, go figure.Medication was incorrect since day one, never resolved, often addressed.I've been in the medical field for sometime in Chicago. A certified surgical laser tech. Information has to be right on, or PEOPLE DIE. They don't seem to grasp this, it's not like we're ordering a pizza.I stayed with my Mom the week she was there (overnight too).I became very acute and aware of protocol.Melissa the speech therapy lady has no manners or people skills whatsoever, at least my experience. Might as well call me Casper. The list can go on and on. . . The LPN's and CNA's were a joy. Hard working and sincere.
