Even though we've lived here for almost 40 years, today is the first time we've eaten at Barelas Coffee House. It's a local institution renowned for feeding everyone from neighborhood residents to presidents. It was super busy with regulars and some tourists, but we found a table pretty quickly. Our server was super friendly and took good care of us.My chile tolerance fluctuates, so I tried the two-egg breakfast with sausage and red and green on the side. It came with hash browns and some fantastic thick tortillas. The red was deeply colored and flavored with the right amount of heat - really good. The green was hotter, so I didn't eat much, but the couple of bites I had were tasty. My only quibble is that my food was a little cold when it arrived, but I was hungry so it wasn't worth taking the time to send it back.My husband enjoyed his huevos rancheros with red, plus one of the tortillas to mop everything up.I can see why Barelas Coffee House is so popular - friendly service and good food.

Honestly - we didn't have a great experience here. We had a long wait to order, a long wait to get our food, and a long wait to receive our check in order to wait in line and pay at the counter.By the time we got our food, the tortillas were cold, the Chile was cold, and everything was...bland. Oh...and the coffee...The coffee did not taste good. The table water also did not taste good. Now, maybe this is because I'm not from here, but the tap water tasted like it was pulled straight from a well...and whatever tap water they served us they used to make the coffee and the coffee had that same exact metallic taste. It was bad: Metallica, pungent, and bitter. I get there is a difference between Mexican, New Mexican, and Tex Mex. I order the Huevos Rancheros and I'm assuming this is New Mexico's version of Huevos Rancheros....they were okay. Maybe it would have been better if everything wasn't cold. Overall, Barelas did not live up to the hype. I've chatted with people born and raised in ABQ and my opinion has caused some controversy. One hand, people love this place and say what I have said is sacrilegious. Then on the other hand - there have been ABQ Natives who agree with me.What I notice is: If you like El Modelo you might not like Barelas and vice versa. That is the only correlation I have found out myself. Personally, I LOVE El Modelo.

My mother in law told me about this place so we stopped by here for breakfast one day. It's such a traditional New Mexico restaurant and has so much history to it! Their tortillas are homemade, highly recommend grabbing a bag of fresh ones before they run out! This place definitely does get busy around breakfast time so expect a wait but so worth it.

I am surprised I haven't reviewed Barelas Coffee House before, as it's got the same last name as myself. The food is great, served quickly, and always fits what you want. Wait times can be long,g and Barelas is often very packed on weekends, even on weekdays, as it is a community staple. I have had meetings here with success, family outings, and always a great experience.

I'm always on the hunt for a good, fluffy pancake here in town, and Barelas really takes the top spot. They're so light and airy while still being flavorful and just sweet enough. I also enjoyed the huevos rancheros as a salty breakfast option. Will definitely be returning to this cozy breakfast spot!

Best spot for breakfast in ABQ. It's a casual diner with homemade dishes done right. Feels like eating at grandma's. The posole is great, red and green chile are done right and the chicharrones are little chunks of meat candy! Taste just like my grandma's! Everything here is delicious. Service is amazing as well.

Amazing at always, seriously a classic and my go to for huevos rancheros.I love when I go and the patio is open because it's always nice to enjoy a piping hot plate of huevos rancheros deluxe and coffee out in the fresh air. They have misters on when it's a little warmer too.

Six of us were in the dinning room for over an hour, we finally got water when we complained. The breakfast was completely cold when served. They offered to reheat it, and took some plates, but how do you reheat eggs? We had to leave.
