Allsups is one of my favorite late-night food stops. Not only do they have the full array of regular gas station snacks, but they also have the coveted NM staple, "Chimis."I grew up with Allsups. We have one about 20 miles from my hometown and several throughout my new town, Albuquerque. I've come to expect the same service whenever I see an Allsups sign, but this location is odd and employees are exceptionally rude. I came here one time prior and it seemed like the woman behind the counter was quite upset that she had customers: not welcoming and really cold. I went in this evening to grab me a couple of chimis, and there were two women working. I came in about 5 minutes until 10pm. There was an older woman with white and purple hair guarding the door while shuffling the open/closed sign around in her hands. Once I opened the door, she immediately shouted at me, "we close in one minute!" I only wanted chimis, so I immediately made my way to the hot food case. I saw there were exactly 4 chimis available, and asked the associate for all four. She exclaimed rudely, "we're not selling food, we close in one minute!" I look at my watch and there are 3 minutes left until 10pm. not a happy customer. People who grew up in NM know the sacredness of chimis. Even though they are probably deep fried in motor oil because they smell like it, these are some of the most appetizing snacks available late night. All in all, this location is garb and the employees that work here are garb. When you work in the service industry, at least try to pretend to be happy. Avoid this location at all costs.

There is a certain ghetto chic associated with most Allsups stores and this location is no exception. From the haphazard stock displays and oh-so-fine layer of fryer grease that permeates everything, to the distinct lack of public facilities, Allsups tends to look like the sort of store you don't want to be in after the sun sets. However, much like the Jeep decals proclaim, you wouldn't understand. At least not if you've never experienced it for yourself.Of course, I'm talking about the World Famous™ burritos and chimichangas. These inexpensive, tasty, and filling treats are welcome acts of civil disobedience in an increasingly health-conscious (and Hipster-Mex) world. I try not to eat these too often, but occasionally, like tonight, the Call of the GutBomb becomes too loud to ignore. Usually, I pick up the Tallsup (32 oz) and two burrito combo, but this time I splurged for the chimichangas. The melty, meaty goodness would ping as a guilty pleasure, if I believed in such a concept.Normally. I try not to be so purple-prose-ish with my reviews, but there's something about these deep fried tastes of heaven that makes me want to wax poetic. As I said, you wouldn't understand.

We wanted to try the ever so famous Allsups burrito. The food actually turned out to be ok but the staff was not friendly and one woman at the register was just plain rude. They were also changing shifts which entailed balancing out their cash drawers. This took a good while, which we understood, but they never acknowledged the customers waiting or apologized for the wait. Simple things - customer service 101. We won't be back.

The burritos and chimichangas are what makes Allsup's famous so we finally broke down and tried to get some.Strangely enough, they were completely out of burritos, as was the Allsup's on 528. We went back a week later and again they had none (neither did the one on 528), no truck deliveries for the burritos is what we were told.We went back another week later and they were out of burritos but they had chimichangas. Ok I figured that was a good place to start so I asked for two beef and two chicken, because that is all they had in stock. When I got home they had actually given me two beef and two green chili. I love green chili but my wife only eats chicken burritos (chimichangas in this case) and she is sensitive to chili so we had a conundrum. She went ahead and trie dates green chili chimi and it was good! She really liked it. I tried the beef and it also was quite good. What makes these terrific is the taco sauce, it is excellent. Do not eat these dry, they just are not the same without the taco sauce. Fortunately the staff of generous with the tack source and I can see why, the tack sauce takes these chimis to a whole new level that is absolutely delicious. These are small, so it takes at least two to make a lunch. They are not like what you get at a Mexican restaurant, they are more like the ones out of a vending machine, but don't let that scare you, they really are that good. they are obviously machine made but when eaten with the taco sauce they are so god that they are craveable, and that is why I think that everyone loves them, at any time of day.Now if I can only get to try a burrito...
